Vin Room - West Ratings and Reviews

I have been to the Vin Room on two previous occasions and had very positive experiences so recommended this to friends. The food quality was not as high as previous experiences and the service was terrible. Even though it was not very busy for a Friday night, it took almost 20 minutes to have our order taken and on multiple occasions we had to track our server down - not very proactive or attentive.
I am a generous tipper - typically 20% (maybe 15% is service is off). This is the first time I ever gave a 5% tip and I even debated 0%. Will be a while before I return and definitely will not recommend to others unless I return and have an experience that offsets this one.

Had an outstanding experience at the Vin Room west. The food is excellent and both of the feature wines for the evening were delicious. We got to sit on the patio, which was quite nice. The glass wall on the patio really keeps out the noise on from 85th street. It was a lovely evening and I would highly recommend it!
Also, it's great that their happy hour is 5-7, perfect for dining early with my parents.

Very expensive and portions are small. It's odd, when many restaurants are lowering prices to entice dinners, amidst increasing competition and a poor economy, it seems Vin Room has increased their prices. Food was good, but not great, especially considering the cost. There's just too many restaurant choices in the area.
Always a excellent dining experience
This is our third time to Vin Room West and so clearly we love it.
The food is amazing, the service is perfect. I can't wait to go back
The menu is largely tapas and so the food comes out as it is prepared. The night we went, they weren't busy and so the food came out quickly with multiple dishes arriving at the same time. Now, each to his own, but for us, we would have preferred to have one dish at a time and wished the kitchen had timed out the delivery a little better.
We elected to sit outside as it was a gorgeous night and Calgary gets so few. However, it was too bright and too hot. I know. I sound like I am complaining about the smallest things. However, my point is that a few strategically placed umbrellas would go a long way.
Overall - an amazing dinner and we will be back as soon as I can conjure up a special occasion.
Service was Ok - nice enough waitress but not as attentive as we expected especially considering it was really not busy for a Saturday night. We sat out on the patio and maybe 1/3 of the tables were being used. It was a little windy but inside was not very busy either. Waitress did not offer up suggestions about wine until we asked. However, she was helpful in suggesting number of plates to order/size of plates. House-made chips with dip were delicious as were the Crab cakes - everything else was just OK. We had pork-braised belly which was fatty. Croquettes were OK - my husband enjoyed more than I did - I found them to be very rich. Chili jam dip was very tasty. The lemongrass chicken meatballs tasted greasy (both of us felt agreed) - could only eat one and it did not sit well. I did like that they changed out our little plates/utensils after each item. It wasn't done until we had already started to try the 2nd dish and the sauces crossed over but the waitress had not brought the 2nd dish - another server did. It would have been nice if he said they would get us a clean plate before he walked away. We live in the area and this was our first visit for a dinner date - hesitated to come based on not-great reviews in the past and based on this experience we probably won't be rushing back.
Had a wonderful time with friends for dinner. We have enjoyed the wine at Vin Room on other occasions but had never eaten. We were very happy with our dinner. The service was friendly and helpful and the food platters that were recommended were fantastic.
Vin Room Always Delivers
Sitting at the bar on date night being served by Sheldon is always a great experience. His candor and wine knowledge never lets you down. His sense of humour and timing on service is also something that is a skill he has mastered. The food at Vin Room is arguably some of the best in the city and given the tapas style, you get to experience several varying tastes. I highly recommend going with flights of wine to enjoy new and different wines and let Sheldon guide you on that journey. Their happy hour specials are also excellent value. If you are looking for great food, service and wine go to Vin Room.
Great group dining
We were a group of five folks dining for dinner. We decided to try the family style dinner which was awesome! Lots of food ( mostly guys in our group) many lovely flavours and the service was great. The only critique might be the music got a little loud at one point which did make conversation a bit of a challenge. It was however a most enjoyable evening . We will be back, a definite do over.
Fun change from ordinary
If you're going for a big traditional meal, this is not the spot. But for a fun treat, sample a bunch of 2 oz varieties of wine and some very tasty tapas. Perfect date night with my wife where we sat in comfy chairs, sampled wines and tasted a number of delicious meats, cheeses, and mini dishes. Server seemed to be spread a bit too thin so, while pleasant and knowledgeable, we didn't see her often enough. Otherwise it was a great night out!
I hate dining out on Valentine's Day. Restaurants are insanely busy and crowded, and it usually feels rushed. This trip was different, we had a 5:00 pm reservation with another couple. The Vin Room wasn't too busy and our server was attentive, but not pushy. Our food was great, the prosecco excellent. No complaints(except the music volume being a tad too high), great value relaxed service.
Highly recommend Vin Room West
We went for Valentines weekend and although they were busy, the service was attentive and we never felt rushed.
The food was fantastic. We did a number of tapas plates and each one was amazing. The duck confit lettuce wraps are not to be missed. Same for the baked bocconcini.
If I had a complaint - and it is only a nit - but the up-sell on the dessert wines was perhaps too much. No complaints about the dessert wines - they were great - but they were a little pricey. But, to be fair, I didn't have to say yes!
Great, but don't get attached to the menu
Vin Room has a great selection of food and wine. The quality and taste is very good! If you are looking for a new place to go with great ambience, this is a good place to try.
The only thing that's not going for Vin Room West is their food for repeat business. My husband and I actually would say a couple years ago that it was our favorite restaurant and had been there several times, and we loved the menu and had our cravings for our favorite dishes. But recently in the year or so each time we come back for a special occasion, our favorite menu items change, even though they don't change the name. It's become very frustrating for us and a disappointment when the food comes out. An example, the eggplant chips and lobster nachos were made differently before and though they are pretty good still (lobster nachos is more like a flatbread now instead of with corn chips), it's disappointing because we loved the originals and came back specifically for our favorite dishes.
In conclusion, if your expectation is a great place for high quality small plates and a huge selection of wines by the glass with 2 once options, Vin Room West is an excellent place! Just don't get too attached to the menu.
This restaurant seriously needs to update its menu! Located in an area of sophisticated diners, it is boring its customers. For years now the menu has hardly changed. The chefs must be bored to death. Retain a small selection of favourites and get new menu selections! This is not a chain restaurant and it should not give a "no surprises - Holiday Inn" experience. This place could be a neighbourhood treasure if there were up-to-date food offerings. Remember the success when it first arrived. Well, the success has gone stale. Wake up and address your market!!!
My husband and myself went to Vin Room for a date night. The food and the wine were absolutely delicious! Great service and I loved the atmosphere. The only thing I would change would be the seating. We were way too close to couples on either side of us. It wasn't busy at all. It wasn't necessary to place us so close together.

Vin is a great venue for a group to socialize and eat. We had them do wine flights for us so we could sample several wines and they made great choices. The food was pretty good but I do think that it is a bit pricey for tapas style portion sizes. Overall great evening though
