Vernon's Speakeasy Ratings and Reviews

Fun from the moment you knock on the door! We had a friend visit from out of town and took him for desserts and drinks. Loved the tiramisu but did not care for the chocolate cake option - was too gooey - like uncooked cake. Our table ordered a Manhattan and was very pleased, a spiced mango mojito that was pleasant, and a gin & tonic which was rather standard. Nice environment. The painted walls are neat. The art is not impressive. The lighting is quite dim. The prices are steep but it's more a place to go on an occasion, so expect to pay more for the ambiance and experience. Great/considerate service. Clean bathrooms. Good music. Clean tables and silverware. Would like to return on a date night to try their food. Hoping they have vegetarian options. Overall, would recommend. Not quite a speakeasy - been to a better more authentic and fun speakeasy, but this is great as an ABQ upscale restaurant where you do not need to worry about riff-raff.

Best birthday celebration ever! Of the five in the party, no one had been to Vernon's Speakeasy.
Well, we know about it now and we plan on coming back soon. We didn't know what exactly to expect, but we soon found out. We had the best food, drinks, service and ambiance we had not even thought would exist in a strip mall. It was fantastic evening and a fantastic way to celebrate our friend's birthday.

They did not honor the reservation time we selected through OpenTable. They told us that "OpenTable does not appreciate the restaurants reservation schedule" so we had to wait to be seated until 40 minutes after the reservation time we selected.

Our server and sommelier, Gabe was outstanding. He imparted his knowledge of wines to pair beautifully with our entrees. The food was abundant and perfectly prepared. Gabe made the dining experience fabulous! Highly recommend this establishment!

Vernon's Speakeasy is consistently top notch. The service is some of the best you'll experience. The food is excellent and the piano music is unique in Albuquerque. The age dried ribeye is the best we've ever had. A shame it available during our 2nd visit, but we learned that it might be necessary to pre-order.

It truly is a speakeasy. Little hard to find. Hilarious getting past the door "guard" but once you're in the food was top notch. Great servers. We were there on a night with a live piano player and he was great too. Good atmosphere all around.

Went for the first time on a Saturday evening. Service was a bit slow. Several times we were looking around wandering how much longer before the next round. I ordered a martini dry and a bartender presented it "dirty". Our waiter may have been over booked. I was surprised that my filet mignone was not as thick or well seasoned as I had expected from a place that advertises itself as a steak house. We also tried the duck tacos and I had the green chili stew as appetizers. Both were good and probably better than the fillet. I asked for the works on my baked potato minus any bacon. The potatoe was served with a cup of sour cream cheeses and bacon all mixed together.
The restaurant's big feature is it poses as a hidden "speakeasy". Once you give the secret password you meet Machinegun Kelly and get to enter through a bookcase hidden door. The art and the live music were great especially for Albuquerque. It's a fun place offering something different than the chains. Supposedly this place is a hangout for the Hollywood crowd. But honestly the steaks were no better than what you could get at a Texas Road house or an Outback. If they really want to make this place memorable they should go for some higher class meat. Where in Albuquerque can you get Kobe or Waygu? I'd probably go back sometime, especially if I had a guest who hadn't been there. But unfortunately, given this experience, it's just not a place I'm rushing to go to again this week. Hope Vernons can make changes to become the top restaurant in Burque.

the service was impeccable. If you are a pessimist you will think the password thing is silly but if you are there for a fun experience you will definately have fun with it. the atmosphere was amazing and the food was so incredibly good and came out right away.

From the time we gave the secret password to the mafia guy at the door to the incredible waitstaff who served our fantastic food and even to the gentleman who swept crumbs off our table between courses, we were absolutely swept off our feet by the entire experience at Vernon's. We were celebrating two special occasions in one night and wanted to celebrate somewhere local that was legitimately fancy and memorable. Vernon's delivered beyond our expectations, and both of us have extensive experience both as patrons and employees of other so called "fine-dining" establishments in Albuquerque. Definitely not knocking the "land of manana" dress code of Burque locals, but it was a very nice break from the norm to go to an upscale Albuquerque restaurant that people actually make an effort to dress up to go to (except the one dude in shorts at the bar). Overall, we were totally impressed and have already told everyone we know. Great job, Vernon's!

Very fun dining experience with great food and amazing service. Be sure to call or Open Table well in advance - and be sure to ask for a table in the lounge area so you can enjoy the music. We were in a back room with three other tables and although it was still great, I would have loved to have been able to hear the sax player.

Great atmosphere. A true speakeasy! Had to give the password to get in. Food was amazing. Service was ok. Our server wasn't attentive but all his assistants were. Water was always filled, dirty dishes were taken etc. The server seemed nervous or something. Would love to come back and try more food. Filet was amazing.

It takes some diligence to find the location, but it's worth it. Decor is dark, with gangster themed artwork, the waitstaff dressed in period garb, and a fun "entrance speech." Don't forget the password. The food is a combination of standard steakhouse fare, with some creative alternative dishes for those seeking a lighter meal. The wine list concentrates on California, and some nice selections that are fairly priced. Our waiter, Gabe, was outstanding - very attentive and informative, but not obtrusive. The food was prepared exactly as ordered, served promptly (but not hurriedly), and was excellent. Tender and juicy steaks, fresh seafood, all properly cooked and spiced. There is a piano bar, but we were there on a slow evening so didn't experience the live entertainment. We will go back next time we're in Albuquerque.

My company went to Vernon's Speakeasy to celebrate a work related milestone and we had a wonderful experience. We were greeted by a mobster and given our warnings and then lead to a private room for our group. The staff was outstanding! They were attentive, polite, and knowledgeable of the menu. The food was phenomenal! From the appetizers to the entrees to the desserts, everything was delicious! Our visit was absolutely perfect and we plan on returning whenever the next occasion arises.

Just as described in the reviews. Greeted by a "mobster" in all the get up and a club in his hand, (This has a 1930s bootlegger theme after we said the password for entry. Warning.......it is very expensive, but very good. Famous for huge steaks grilled to perfection. Various toppings available to top off the steaks. We each had the14 oz Rib Steak. It came with a veg of the day and a side (potato). That was after a starter we shared of scallops (excellent).
Full service bar and great wine list available. Service was outstanding. And the bread (made in house) was wonderful. Needless to say, we took home a lot of leftovers.

More than a nice restaurant eating a nice meal, Vernon's was an experience to be remembered. From being greeted by a palooka with a baseball bat threatening to break your bones if he hears your cellphone go off to the outstanding service to the pianist playing the tunes that were so special, to the magnificent food, nothing could have been any better for our anniversary dinner.

Great atmosphere, excellent service and food. This is a place for a romatic evening, gathering of small group, dressing up in 1920's style. Low lighting, speakeasy entrance & 20's decor add to the ombiance. Food was excellent, tho known for there excellent steaks, the quail, pork chops are just as great.

Great atmosphere, loved the food, and really enjoyed the private speakeasy vibe. The live pianist really set the mood for the whole night. The only I can critique is the wait for our food was kind of long and our waiter didn't really check up on us until after we finished our entree.

Vernon's is always a great place to have a delicious dinner! The waiters are fabulous, and it's fun to have to give your password through the opening like a speakeasy. I had the ribeye steak and it was done perfectly, just a little more cooked than rare.

Our food was cooked exactly as requested. The wait staff was extremely attentive. We were seated in the piano area, and the piano player was very talented. My only complaint would be that the wine glasses were twice the size of the wine that was poured. The wine itself was very good though.

As vegetarian, I always figured Vernon's wasn't for me (it's a steakhouse afterall) but recently noticed that they have a rotating vegetarian option on their menu, as well as a tasty looking salmon dish for my husband. So we went for his birthday dinner and were both delighted. The baked brie was amazing, the watercress salad was memorable and our (non-steak) entrees were excellent. The atmosphere was fun and service was superb. It's a bit pricey but for a special occasion we'll definitely go back and will send friends there who are looking for a fun and delicious special treat.

We took a friend here for her Bachelorette Party. I can only say that it was probably her favorite part of the entire night. We had a very attentive waiter/sommelier that was knowledgeable about the history of the restaurant and was very in tune to our needs and ensuring that we had a memorable experience. The ambiance here is phenomenal, and you really feel the vibe that the restaurant is known for. The Prime Rib is probably the best thing I have ever put in my mouth. This place is worth visiting.

We enjoyed celebrating our daughter's 25th birthday at Vernon's. The food was tasty and the wine was superb. The ambiance is great and the piano player was very talented playing very good music. The prices are too high, though.
