The Southern Ratings and Reviews
Birthday dinner. Because this restaurant ...
Because this restaurant came to me with such a high review my expectations were high and expected a 4-5 star restaurant.
Noise - off the charts it was really hard to hear someone talking... very loud and not a lot of noice canceling decor with hard wood ceiling.
Service was very good and very nice and hospitable servers!! 5*
FOOD: My steak i ordered a MED for the Aged steak... top dollar and came in at MED rare being kind. MY WIFE she ordered same cut and asked for a Med Rare and it was RARE
FRIENDS with us: ordered the Filet cut and she was very happy and it was flavorful. Her husband ordered the chicken and said it was good.
Waiter said they would fix the MED and RARE cuts we received and they weren't refired they were reheated which surprised me at this restaurant but they did come back but it took over 25 MInutes easily.... so when we ate our friends were already finished and just watching us eat. Not happy.
Wanted to like it more but and mistakes do happen, and front of house staff was great... Kitchen failed and the noise level again was off the charts for this type of restaurant. A Cafeteria it would be expected.

I reviewed all of the top places in Nashville and picked The Southern based on menu and location downtown. It was a homerun. Great service, fun vibrant spot. I will definitely come back on another visit to Nashville!

We were in town from Philadelphia and wanted to have a nice meal. The Southern surpassed our expectations. The Food was AMAZING. We had the oysters and BBQ shrimp for appetizers wnd the belle for dinner. It was cooked to perfection. Our server was a delight. Everything he suggested was delicious. The bread pudding was the best we have ever had! Definitely go here if you are in Nashville!!

After a few months of thyring to make a reservation we were excited to finally book a date night dinner. So disappointed! The food was AWFUL. We both ordered tge salmon which was supposed to be served with beets & other veggies. Instead, the fish was swimming in water with wilted lettuce and apples &. NO beets which looked & smelled like garbage that had already been thrown out. After our dinner was served our waitress was no where to be found. When we asked another server passing by, he said they were busy. We will never go back. There is not enough space here to truly describe how terrible the food was and how it was presented in comparison to the description offered by our waitress. Combined with the prices and sub-standard service it's actually deplorable. Embarrassment for Nashville.

My husband and I go to The Southern fairly often. We love their cocktails. My husband really enjoys their sazerac and I love the Kendall's cup. We have gone frequently since the opening as my husband felt they had the best burger in town. However the last 3 times he has been disappointed by the burger. It has been under cooked and way too salty and he loves salt. We will probably return for cocktails and other food items but not the burger.

I went with my parents this past Friday night. We were seated in the center of the restaurant by the bar. The acoustics were like a jet engine. It was kind of sad because my parents could carry on a conversation me without yelling. After about 15 minutes just gave up trying. Our waiter was great. The food was good, but not great. We all had different cuts of steak, and they were all a bit lacking flavor. The bbq shrimp were great as an appetizer. That item never disappoints! Overall it was a good experience, in the future I would ask to be seated at one of the side tables away from the center.

We had a great meal at The Southern. In Nashville for a girls trip, party of 5, late lunch. Had a little bit of everything on the menu, all delicious. Barrett was our waiter & was very knowledgeable about the menu, gave us great tips on other places to go & was a great waiter. Can't recommend The Southern & Barrett enough.

Food was awesome. Our waiter was so in top of our food that one dish was about to be set in front of our friend and before the server could get it picked up our waiter who didn't miss a beat said Oh No you don't that order is wrong! The ribs were ordered without sauce but came with sauce. Within a minute our friend had a fresh order of ribs in front of him. That's customer service!

Overall, the experience was good. The food was really tasty and service was nice.
For me, the one negative was the noise. I had dinner with 2 other business associates, and we all found it difficult to converse, because it was incredibly loud (in full disclosure, it was a Friday night). The table/seating was somewhat cramped inside, which also might have added to the noise factor.
Outside of noise, my general experience was enjoyable. The food portions are a little small, and the price is a little steep for what you get, but it is located in a trendy part of Nashville, so you kind of expect that in a popular higher-end restaurant such as this one.

Always when in Nashville, I go here as recommended by concierge years ago at a local hotel. Great food and atmosphere, great experience for trying out some Southern food. Located just a few blocks off Broadway a must go to when in Nashville for the food, the local dishes and location!

I'm writing this somewhat negative review because I really like The Southern and admire all Tom Morales has done in Nashville's dining scene. I hope I can help The S. fix a shortcoming.
Yesterday I had my second not-very-good business lunch in three weeks at The S. I don't recall enough about the beef tacos I had the first time to comment knowledgeably, but I came away dissatisfied--purely with the food. The service was great as always.
Yesterday a colleague and I first split a dozen oysters--six James River and six Blue Point. I always worry about oysters coming from such a distance (& I grieve that Apalachicola's beds are apparently so damaged that The S. no longer carries those great oysters), but ours were delicious and perfectly served.
I didn't feel I needed anything more than the New South Caesar to follow the shellfish. The menu has it as containing "romaine, shaved country ham, herbed goat cheese crouton, buttermilk Caesar and blackstrap drizzle." It does indeed contain those elements. It's the proportions that were the problem.
It would have been nice to see a little more than a garnish-level application of the shaved ham bits, as there was not enough to get any flavor from it in a bite. The crouton was, as the menu said, a single crouton--truth in advertising there--and the goat cheese was delicious. But I learned as much only when I peeled some of it off with my finger after finding the piece of baguette it was on so stale I could not bite through it.
The romaine had only a nominal amount of buttermilk Caesar dressing on it. Most of the lettuce was bare except for the blackstrap drizzle, which seemed to touch everything. Had I known that "blackstrap" refers to molasses, I would have asked to omit it--my fault for not asking, but the menu might have spelled things out a little more. It's just gross in a Caesar--conceivably better with a full complement of normal Caesar dressing, but that was lacking.
I'll be back to The S., but maybe for cocktails.

Main course took a long time to come out from the appetizer arrivals. Steak was underdone and had to be sent back by 1 dinner other dinners also noticed steak was on the rare side of the orders but did not send back. Dinner who sent steak back was still not happy 15 minutes later when it was returned still very raw. Not sure if anything was done in the 15 minutes. At this price point better food was expected, all of us had eaten there before and would not return after this latest dining experience.

Went there while visiting Nashville on the advice of a friend - who suggested - any meal at The Southern would be a good idea. Finally got in for breakfast on our last day and it was worth the wait. Different options, which I love, perfectly cooked yummy chicken and waffles. My favorite that I have eaten. My husband had pasta for breakfast! He loved it. Wish there was one in Cincinnati!

It was our first time dining at The Southern & it was as wonderful as had been recommended to us. My friend had the wedge salad and the Filet and she loved them both. I had the Saffire Steak Biscuits, which were delicious and the server was kind enough to ask the kitchen to cook the steak to a temperature I liked, which they don't normally do. I also had the country fried chicken with white cheddar Mac & Cheese, which was delicious. The country ham gravy was especially good. We were unfortunately too stuffed for dessert, but the food was amazing and our server was attentive. We would definitely go back again or recommend The Southern to a friend.

Overall, the experience was good. The noise level was pretty loud to where we felt like we were shouting at each other due to the live music. The food was very good. The waitress's response, however, when we asked if we could substitute the hot chicken for regular chicken on the hot chicken salad, was "well we don't typically do that, but I guess I could ask the chef". I was not impressed with her response.

We met up over the weekend with friends from Georgia for the Adele concert. The Southern was recommended by our friend's sister. It was wonderful food & reasonable prices. Make sure & make a reservation if you want to get a seat!

We ate outside because it was so loud in the main dining room. I guess that's part of the fun, but I wasn't into yelling at my companions for Sunday brunch. Food was great!!!! Book a booth and then you can have a more intimate space and maybe not lose your voice. Otherwise, wonderful!

Went here on our last night for dinner.. It was absolutely amazing, the drinks were great and the food melted in your mouth and was prepared so quickly. I would definitely recommend making a reservation otherwise you'll be waiting a long time. The only available spot when I was there was for 10pm. Overall I had an amazing experience here and the service and hospitality were lovely

Great location down town. Definitely a hot spot type of scene. The ribs and fish tacos were ok. the burger was really, really great! Very loud inside so we opted to wait to sit outside which was perfect. Wait staff were polite and prompt.

Went to The Southern for Saturday Brunch - glad we made a reservation with OpenTable, as it was packed, and many people waiting outside for a table. My daughter & I went for a late Breakfast - celebrating her 21st birthday in Nashville. Food was fantastic - Bloody Mary was really good and spicy; blood orange mimosa was good too! The special Nashville Benedict was really tasty - totally recommend it!! My daughter opted for the hotcakes with a side of potatoes; really good too! Atmosphere was really fun (loud, but that's part of what made it great), bar area was great!! Will go back again next time I'm in Nashville!!
