Sunset Terrace - Omni Grove Park Inn Ratings and Reviews

We had awesome lunch overlooking Asheville in the peak of leaf season. The Grove Park is incredible by itself but being able to sit on the terrace overlooking the mountains was spectacular. The good was exceptional and the service was what you would expect from a 5 star restaurant.

This is without question one of the most scenic restaurants in the country. That alone makes the experience worthwhile. The food was excellent. The views and ambiance were without parallel. The service was mediocre, in fact it may have been less than that. Slow in serving the entre, the waiter disappeared when we needed the check and he also did not tell us the price of the evening's special, a NY strip that turned out to be $76. Normal menu items were on the very high end but not outrageous. The drinks were outrageously high priced. the evening was capped off with a $15 parking charge. I would, however go back if I was to return to the area.

Ordered filet medium based on the menu description and it was well done. Server immediately took it to the kitchen for a new one, 30 mins later I asked for the order to be canceled because everyone had finished eating. Then 5 mins later the manager brought the order and she did box it to go and didn't charge for the steak. I dine here at least 5 times per year and this was not typical.

This is our third time eating at the Sunset Terrace and it never disappoints. The view is absolutely spectacular down into Asheville, especially on a Fall evening. Our server was extremely attentive and the food was wonderful (we each had an 8 oz. steak). We'll be back!

The food and service were great. The table behind us was loud, obnoxious, drunk and foul-mouthed. There was an F bomb just about every 45 seconds.
It was scenic overlooking the city of Asheville but one needed additional lighting to read the menu and wine list. We used our cell phone light.
Either the staff and management were deaf or just didn't care. It took away from an enjoyable dinner.

Unfortunately we had a very disappointing experience. First with arrival, we were told no valet parking and we would have to park in the garage. No offer of assistance beyond that as far as parking. We had never been there before so we didn't know where we were going. Apparently the elevators were not working on the parking garage side so we had to find our way into the hotel via steps. There we found a functioning elevator. At this point we were a little surprised how difficult things were going. We get seated with a beautiful view. That was as far as the good part of the experience went. Very typical menu. We ordered a drink then an appetizer. Had a little chit chat and then the waiter came to see if we were ready to order. No appetizer yet. I had some questions on the menu. The waiter had no interest in helping with the menu. I have never been so rushed to order and so little help from the waiter. Still no appetizer. I ordered a cup of soup with my dinner. After a few minutes here comes the appetizer and my soup. We enjoyed the appetizer but I didn't even get to eat my soup and guess what? Here comes dinner. Unbelievable! This is suppose to be fine dining!
The presentation was awful. My plating looks better at home with my everyday dinner. I wish I had a picture to submit. Both our plates were white oval with a steak a garlic head and that was it! My steak was over cooked and the other steak was very undercooked. No, we didn't complain. At this point we had our steaks packed up and we left. Such an incredible disappointment. And the kicker is that the restaurant is named Sunset Terrace but you can forget about a sunset. You will not see one from this restaurant. Maybe you could have years ago before they built an additional hotel in the side of the original building. Needless to say the next trip to Asheville will not include a trip to Sunset Terrace.

Magnificent views, incredible food selections excellent service nothing more to ask for!! We had a unforgettable anniversary celebration--can't wait to return.
Brian provided impeccable service, the best service in quite sometime! He was very engaging, personable & extremely aware of all food options.

Our server, Patricio, was excellent. The view at sunset was beautiful. Food was mediocre, especially considering the high price. My steak was terribly oversalted, as was the sweet potato hash. My husband enjoyed his scallops, but neither meal was served hot, probably due to the distance to the kitchen. My recommendation would be to come here for a drink at sunset and then go to another restaurant in Asheville (like Bouchon) for a much better meal at a more reasonable price.

You don't go to Sunset Terrace for a cost effective meal. You go for the sunset, unbelievable view of the mountains, and the impeccable service. If you're traveling to Asheville, and looking for a great way to spend one of your evenings, this is a special experience you won't regret.

Another terrific lunch on the Terrace - will miss it this winter! The service is always terrific - Brian is a great addition to the team...
It may be simple but the smash burger is delicious & portion is right-sized.

Service was excellent and the view is spectacular. I was offered my choice of four different knives for my steak. Unfortunately the steak, while not bad was nothing to write home about. The au poivre sauce was bland and the mac and cheese side was too. My wife's grouper was dry and the "8 oz" fillet was more like five. The desserts we no better than what you can get at any hotel kitchen.
However the service both very friendly any efficient. Too bad the food wasn't equal to the excellent staff.

What a disappointment......
We were looking forward to having a wonderful experience at this iconic hotel and restaurant. When we arrived we went to a table on the lower terrace to watch the sunset. We asked a waitress if we seated ourselves and she informed us it was first come first serve. We sat at a dirty table thinking someone would come by and offer us service, that was not the case. After ten minutes of waiting I decided to walk up to the bar and order drinks. I went back to the table with our drinks and when I went to take a sip I noticed that the martini glass was a dirty and coated with strawberry seeds. I went back to the bar and the bartender apologized and made me a new drink. We enjoyed the view and the beautiful sunset. Needless to say not one server ever asked if we needed anything and we sat with dirty plates on the table before heading to the hostess to be seated.
At that point I did not have high hopes for our dining experience. We were seated in the dining room and our waiter approached us and gave us a quick description of the specials and said are you ready to order? He did not make suggestions or ask if we wanted something to drink. After having to ask him questions about the menu we placed our order. We had ordered a bottle of wine prior to our dinner order and the waiter came back to fill our glasses and proceeded to pour the wine in our water glass.
I could go on and on about the cold food, lack in flavor and overall lack of sophisticated dining that you would expect at this price point. We dine at high end steak houses quite often so the price was not the issue.
The ONLY thing that the Sunset Terrace has to offer is a view. We chose not to speak to a manager because you can just sense that no one there cares if you are happy or not. We made it very clear to our waiter that we were not happy. He comped dessert, coffee and after dinner drinks. Although that was nice we didn't go for free dessert we went for a great meal.......

The ambiance of the restaurant is amazing- we have been many times and enjoy the menu and the location. We were so disappointed that this time the food was not very good. Overcooked fish and a dessert that is not supposed to be served frozen obviously had just come out of the freezer as it was frozen solid and we could not really eat it.- The experience was a disappointment for the expense range of this venue and our past experience. We hope that the restaurant is not going down hill now that it is owned by Omni.

I've stayed at the hotel several times but never dined on the terrace before. Was really looking forward to my experience! I've never been so let down! To long to get a drink, too long to get a glass of water, Too look to get Our dinner and when We did it was terrible! I ordered the trout and it was a terrible mess! Never have I had trout prepared this way but the rest of the meal was not even what was on the menu. I got kale...it tasted nasty but it should of been spinach! I got Resotto but it was suppose to be rice and I never got the butternut squash! There were six members to Our party( that was not a large group),but all six agreed with Me....We'll go out to eat next time We stay at the Inn!

We reserved a table for dinner to celebrate our anniversary. Even though it was pouring down rain, the view was beautiful, the staff outstanding and the food delicious. We could not have enjoyed the experience any more.
After dinner, we headed inside and enjoyed an after-dinner drink in front of one of the fireplaces.

This is the 2nd time I have dined at The Sunset Terrace restaurant. This was a very special celebration for myFather's 79TH birthday. We had drinks beforehand at cocktail lounge and his Manhattan was $15 and WAS NOTHING BUT A HUGE ICECUBE! (3sips!)
Our waiter at Sunset Terrace had to be asked SEVERAL for everything! My Mom's crab cake was mushy and my trout was luke warm.
For the price of everything, I would rate it 'average' at best! (Actually, BAD!)

I live within a mile of the Grove Park Inn and have lived in Asheville since June 2010. I had family in town and wanted them to have a special treat. However, I found that the Sunset Terrace was too crowded, too noisy and the food was mediocre and way overpriced. We will most likely not be back. I feel that the GPI has turned into a tourist trap.

We made reservations via the OpenTable app (very convenient!), and arrived a bit early to wander the grounds. The staff was very friendly, and sat us upon checking in. We didn't think to inquire about seating choices, nor were we offered any at the time. The hostess escorted us to a 2-top along the outer edge of the terrace. Gorgeous view, but also in the burning, scorching, intense direct rays of the sun. Our (first) waiter came over and introduced himself, saw that we seemed uncomfortable, and then immediately asked if we would like to move. My wife and I glanced at each other, and quickly assented. The gentleman inquired with the hosts, and relocated us to well-shaded 2-top in the rear of the terrace, a table not in his section! It was a very thoughtful gesture, and one we both very much appreciated.
Our new waiter introduced himself, went over the specials, took drink orders, and chatted with us. After I expressed an interest in the steak special (an aged KC strip), he paused for a second and indicated that they "might" have a single remaining steak from the previous night. This turned out to be a 12oz 60 day aged NY Strip! My choice made, my wife selected the Faroe salmon, and we ordered bison meatballs as a starter.
The meatballs were delicious. Well seasoned, fork tender, and accompanied by a hearty tomato/parmesean sauce. Following this, a runner showed up with a small basket of warm biscuits along with a plate of honey, softened butter, and fresh cracked pepper. Delectable.
Shortly thereafter, the entrées arrived. The steak was an interesting cut - 3-4" tall, but only 1-2" wide. Lovely crust on both top and bottom, and very flavorful... but not what I expected from a 60 day aged steak. The middle portion seemed less intense than anticipated. My wife's salmon was excellent, as were the side dishes (mushrooms, sweet potato hash).
We ended the meal with a solid cherry cobbler/bake ala mode. Great experience overall. Highly recommended!
