Heard about this restaurant several years ago and finally made it there. So very glad we did. First of all, I want to say how great our bartender was. Unfortunately we didn't get his name but we'd visit again just for him. Very knowledgeable about drinking recommendations and local attractions.
Went for the food but the start in the bar really highlighted our overall experience. Moving on to the meal, what can I say? Would go back in a heartbeat!!!! On par with fine dining in Chicago.
Thanks to all of the staff.

Not as good as our usual experience at Splash. It was restaurant week and I received an email for $25 3 course meal. When we ordered, the waitress ask my girl friend if she would like lobster macaroni as one of her sides. When we got the bill, I was charged $12 for the lobster macaroni. Also the meals were $28 and not $25. The wine stewart just laughed when told of the error. He said there was a mistake in the email. We thought it was deceptive that the waitress did not mention the additional charge for the lobster macaroni. Also the advertised price of the meal should have been the price we paid. We go to Splash about 6 times a year. This experience will curtail our Splash frequency.

Well I was in town on business and doing a little Geocaching on the side. Went downtown to do an Earthcache checked out Opentable and found this gem of a restaurant. The food was great and I loved all the fish tanks, very cool.
Thanks so much for the hospitality

This was not a very good restaurant. I had a bone-in Ribeye and honestly the flavor was poor. The service was extremely poor. It was just 3 people eating (Wife, son and myself) and bill was $279.00, which if the food is good, I don't mind, but the food was poor.

Parking was awful, after driving around for 15 minutes looking for parking I almost left. Parking garage nearby was cash only, no parking available on the street, and every available parking spot was reserved for someone specific. After a short walk in the Iowa humidity to splash, I was greeted with a smile from the beautiful hoistist, as another gentlemen walked out after asking where parking was. Food and service was amazing, our waitress was friendly and helpful. My beautiful date ordered the special (Alaskan salmon) we had to send it back because it was undercooked for her liking (fresh salmon arrives at the table medium rare). Our waitress was understanding and friendly and the salmon was back at our table in less then 10 minutes. My steak was juicy and tender, and the king crab was outstanding. Although Splash can be pricey, we managed to only spend $150 without drinks and desert.

After a less than favorable experience in December we decided to give Splash a second try. The food was okay. The wait staff is very impersonal and "stuffy". We indicated we were celebrating a birthday and this was mentioned upon confirmation of the reservation earlier in the day. However, there was no mention of it by wait staff. Not a big deal, but acknowledging it would elevated the experience significantly. Not a place we will go back to, unfortunately.

One of my favorite restaurants in central Iowa. Disappointed in this trip though; not sure if they were short-staffed or not but, the food was average. If you are going to have a surf and turf pasta you have to have trimmed meat (steak). The steak was fatty and gristly, the shrimp was overcooked and the sauce needed seasoned.
Had RSVP, asked for a quiet setting, was seated in the oyster bar.
We will go back but...not anytime soon.

The only thing that brought us back to Splash for a 3rd time was the excellent food. That being said, this was probably our last visit. The food was again wonderful, excellent even. But for the last two visits, the service was terrible. Our second to last visit we sat in the bar due to a private party taking up the entire restaurant. Our server was very nice and spot-on with her recommendations but was unable to serve us well as she had way too many tables to attend. Exact same situation this time, server was very nice and personable but not at all attentive. Our water was not refilled until 2 minutes before we left (and by a hostess), never offered a second cocktail, and saw a visible look of relief when we said we would pass on dessert. For over $200 for four people, you expect better...much better. Splash MUST hire more staff, the current table to server ratio is not fair to your servers and much less your customers. One random food note: we ordered the shrimp and calamari appetizer for a 3rd time and it was probably half the size of what we were previously served, maybe 3-4 strips of calamari and 3-4 shrimp. Not nearly enough to warrant the price tag.

Amazing meal, best we've had in some time. I had the swordfish, blackened style which was excellent, but the real stars were the side dishes. Crab cake appetizer was delicious, and both the kale with mushrooms in a wine sauce and the mashed sweet potatoes were just fantastic --really made the meal. My wife had lobster mac and cheese which was as good as it sounds.
Fish selection sparse (for a seafood restaurant)
I've been disappointed in their limited selection of fish . For example, they do not offer trout, flounder, snapper. I'm not a huge fan of swordfish, which I ordered because there are not that many other options. They do offer salmon; however, I prepare that at home so much that I'm not motivated to eat it when dining out. I strongly recommend they diversify their seafood selection by adding several more option.
excellent food, service, and ambiance
I have eaten at Splash on several occasions for my birthday or my husband's birthday and the service it top-notch. They print menus just for us with "happy birthday...." on the top and decorate your table. Waiters are knowledgable and excellent. Food is excellent every time we've eaten there. One of our favorite restaurants in Des Moines.

The food that was good was phenomenal, but the salads came out at least 15 minutes apart so we couldn't eat together, and the main courses were hot and cold so we had to send food back. Even worse, to warm the food up, it was clear they put a beautiful piece of tuna in the microwave, ruining the dish completely. It was clear the kitchen was greatly struggling. I was so disappointed to see a phenomenal dinner ruined by kitchen incompetence.
Best Seafood in Mid-America
Splash offers great seafood brought in daily. The shrimp and calamari appetizer was the best I've ever had. The staff is knowledgeable, welcoming, and always on top of all your needs. The surf and turf was excellent as was the salad with grilled shrimp that we had. The aquariums around the room bring home the seafood atmosphere. Medium priced if you're used to a Chicago rather than an Iowa menu. Good medium priced wines available. Downtown location makes it a must stop for travelers and locals alike.
Good food, waitress not engaged
I treated my wife for our 8th anniversary.
Food was great, although very pricey. Seafood, meat and sides perfectly cooked. Server was polite, but distant: maybe she had too many tables or was just having a bad personal day. She was just missing that easy repartee that comes naturally to good servers and endears them and their establishment to customers
