Visited for our 10th Anniversary and first time on the West Coast. The Shadowbrook has unique and lovely atmosphere with beautiful gardens and Creek View (had a window seat)
Our food was very good and waitress was outstanding as was the bus boy:) They surprised us with a half bottle of champagne and 2 delicious truffles with candles to boot. We enjoyed our experience very much as well as the cable car that we rode in after dinner SO UNIQUE :)!

The food was good - nothing out of this world special, but a nice prime rib. My wife had the osso bucco and didn't love it, but didn't hate it. We had reservations for 8:15 and were there right on time, only to be told it would be a 10-15 minute wait, which was actually a 20 minute wait. They book out well in advance though so still must make a reservation, just know you likely won't be seated at your time of reservation, as other diners have noted in their reviews. I made note that we were on our honeymoon at the time of reservation but the staff was not made aware (I did end up mentioning to our server, who kindly offered on-the-house champagne, though we declined) and thus our table was pretty mediocre. They do make a big deal of telling you at the time of reservation that they can't guarantee any certain table, but surely after a 20 minute wait past our reservation time, they could have found a nice table for our special occasion. Had creme brulee and "Kelly's Coffee" for dessert, both which were good/standard. Would recommend for the view and because it is quite a different layout with the trolley and all the greenery, but was definitely displeased with some aspects of the service, nor were we "wowed"... Expected bigger things because it was on the Top 100 Most Romantic list, and we dined at another restaurant on the list before and were totally blown away.

My parents gifted my husband and me a date night out to Shadowbrook...two Christmases ago. They told us that it was such a romantic restaurant and that we had to find a chance to go, and two years later...we finally did, and boy oh boy, did we leave wondering how we let it go that long before leaving the little one at home with grandma and grandpa and take a date night out to Capitola and Shadowbrook! They sure didn't disappoint: we were seated in the garden room, and the waiter took such excellent care of us, and had several suggestions for wine, and then what we should have off of the menu. We had the ahi tuna and house salad for appetizers, then I had the beef Wellington and my husband the lamb. We finished with the chocolate meltdown. Yummy! What a fun and delicious evening. :) thanks to all!

On recommendation from my girlfriend who had frequented this establishment when she lived in Santa Cruz, I booked a table for her 50th birthday. I had never been here before and I was amazed at the atmosphere, building and surroundings. With its multi levels, it flows very nice and you can see special attention is made to keep everything clean and looking beautiful-inside and out. That being said, I was very disappointed at the waitstaff and lack of attention being given for her 50th. The food was good but overshadowed by the poor service. I will give it another chance when I come back... hopefully we have better service.

We were celebrating our 52nd wedding anniversary with our son. Guests on both sides of us were very loud. Not your fault! Service was ok, one of the younger waiters who dispensed bread, seemed upset when we asked for extra butter, and a glass for Perrier water, then topped my glass with regular water, oops . This was not our first visit to Shadowbrook, but it was the worst. I did tell the waiter that I had a problem with the "smashed potatoes, and the simmered pork sauce, which was away too much, volume-wise. He said " oh, I'm sorry " and walked away. That was a first for us ever. I wasn't looking for a free meal, we opted not to celebrate with dessert, didn't trust our luck, which was not too good. My husband and son were o.k. with their choices. You asked for an opinion, too bad it is negative. Jean Gillette.

We had been told by many people that this was the place to go on a special occasion. We were celebrating our 5 year Anniversary and managed to get a last minute reservation for 9:30pm that night. Late for me to go to dinner but definitely worth the time. It did take about an additional 20 minutes to get seated after the time of our reservation. The food was amazing and so was the ambiance. I would come again when its still light preferably sunset and be able to see the property in its entirety.

that takes people up and down the hill with the view of the multi level restaurant on the river, was very fun and the kids couldn't stay off of it.
Will definitely return. The food and especially the service was excellent.

Visiting CA and so nice to experience a restaurant with such a great history and where so many of my family members have also dined-gives us a nice connection! Wonderful service and delicious food. Overall enjoyable memorable evening! Enjoyed the beautiful stroll down to the restaurant and the adorable cable car back up!

We hadn't been to Shadowbrook for many years but decided to go for our son's birthday at his request. The garden and outdoor view are still beautiful and the food is still overpriced and mediocre. The most disappointing was that we had reservations and it took at least thirty minutes to be seated. When we asked a second time about when we'd get seated, the excuse was that there was a banquet going on...so? We made a reservation so we could reserve a table at a specific time! While the host did apologize, there was no offer of compensation like drinks a dessert, nothing. The food is not great and it's ridiculously overpriced. Sorry son, that was our last visit to Shadowbrook.

The food was unbelievable. I had the surf and turf. The filet mignon was to die for! My husband had the truffle gnocchi, I tasted it. It was yummy. The complimentary ride from our hotel in the vintage taxi was a great plus.

This was our second time here and the first time was an amazing experience so perhaps our expectations were too high. For a romantic restaurant the area we sat in (ironically the same table we sat at four years ago) seems to be fairly loud. This restaurant is huge with many different seating areas so our experience may be much different from other guests sitting in other areas. Food was somewhere between good and great, far too much salt in some sauces and the filet was not nearly as tender as I would have expected due to being overcooked. The margarita my wife ordered tasted terrible - very sour - so we sent it back and they replaced it with a glass of wine. We noticed a major difference between servers, ours was all business and didn't show any personality. The tables next to us had a gentleman who was happy to answer questions and had a great personality. If I was at a Denny's I wouldn't care much about the behavior of the server but you go to a place like Shadowbrook to have an experience, not just to eat so it would be nice to have had some more interaction from him. Not sure if we'll return, if we had an amazing experience like our first visit then we would definitely come back but a mediocre experience in an area that has so many good dining options - probably time we go elsewhere.

My husband and I love Shadowbrook! Unlike other restaurants in the area, which charge resort prices for mediocre food, Shadowbrook provides amazing food and service for a reasonable price. The cocktails are also wonderful. We're planning to try them all over the years!

We came to Shadowbrook for my birthday. It was perfect. Our waiter, Brent, was fabulous. We sat by a window looking out to the water. Very serene setting. The first time I came here was with my Dad for my 8th grade graduation which was many years ago. It brings back special memories every time I come back. Food was wonderful.

The service was excellent, we had one waiter plus a gentleman who refilled drinks and served fresh bread and butter. The two entrees we ordered was the special of the day. The gnocchi was delicious . The steak medallions that accompanied the dish were over cooked and dry. Will try them again on another occasion. I was concerned that the mark up for our bottle of wine was $25 dollars.

Went for a birthday dinner on a Sunday. The ambiance at Shadowbrook is wonderful, including the amazing garden and the charming little trolley that takes diners down from the parking area to the restaurant. The food was excellent--much better than my last visit 5 years ago! The staff was attentive and my daughter and I shared a complimentary birthday sundae. A special place for special occasions.

Loved the ambiance of the Shadowbrook. It's located on the water and has a great outdoor seating area. We enjoyed the fried artichokes and home made potato chips with craft beer and wine. Our table was ready early so we were seated in the garden dining room. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. The Dodd was excellent. I had the slow roasted prime rib which was cooked to order while my husband had the Beef Wellington. He loved his dish served with scalloped potatoes and shaved Brussels sprouts. We were not rushed and had a great evening. For dessert we shared a couple of truffles which were perfect after our filling meal! Would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. It's been around forever and is still as good as ever. We walked down to the restaurant to enjoy the scenery but be sure to Ride the vernacular back up to the street level- it's fun!

I set up my parents with reservations here for their 35th anniversary. They had never been here before and I have never heard them say such great things about any restaurant before. They LOVED it, had nothing but amazing things to say and said they cannot wait to go back! Thanks for making their special occasion so memorable for them!

The staff was very helpful and always available for us. I truly enjoyed going there for my birthday (Cherylinn). The restaurant was recommended by a hotel staff in Santa Cruz, we are from Los Angeles. Thank you Casablanca at the beach.
