Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar - KIHEI, Maui Ratings and Reviews
Food was delicious - had the Dynamite shrimp, teriyaki beef, tempura, ramen w/ crab, butterfish appetizer , 3- way sashimi, & the desert: deep fried macadamia nut pound cake rolled w/vanilla ice cream. Our server Charlotte was wonderful: knowledgable & kept the food coming!!
We had an excellent time at Sansei's for my birthday. We order the panko crusted ahi roll, which is one of their long term specialties. It was so good we ordered ab2nd roll. We made reservations on Open Table and let them know it was my birthday and they gave me an excellent creme brûlée. The service was very good as well. Thanks for a wonderful birthday dinner! 😊
Have eaten here before and it is very consistent. Good quality sushi with some other entrees such as tempura. Cost is moderate with 25% discount off entrees in the first half hour or so. Quick and efficient service. Fairly large open restaurant makes it a bit noisy. They have a sushi bar. Usually very busy but less so in late May for this visit. Quiet time of year here. Some children at dinner.
I gave special instructions for the reservation since it was for a birthday. Hostess was confused upon our arrival, sat us hastily, then a manager came and asked us to move after 10 minutes. Server was great, food was just OK, but definitely not worth the price. Sad that the seating request and birthday request was completely ignored. Not recommended for a special night out. Fine dining prices without the expected effect.
We were so excited to go here since the reviews were great but the menu was just not great, I felt like we're were eating unhealthy sushi as there were not many choices without something fried or added fats...I just enjoy fresh rolls but this isn't the place for it.
The drinks had added purées or sorbet in them making them very sweet...even all the warm sakis had syrup added.
Ambiance is not nice at all and the service is attentive but delivered with attitude.
Not going back!
We were seated immediately and our waitress was very helpful. The food was very good. Some interesting sushi rolls with unique combinations. Seaweed salad was fresh and crunchy. Seafood pasta had an unusual sauce but good. Overall very nice evening out- just think the prices in Maui are a bit outrageous!
For the 9 yrs we've come to Maui, we have eaten at Sensei 2-3 x each year and have enjoyed consistently excellent innovative sushi and fresh fish, even though the service has always been with weary servers in a hurry to flip the tables. We eat early so this may not be true later in the evening. This time, the server was even more indifferent and abrupt. My green bean tempura appetizer was made with over-mature tough beans, sent back with no apology forthcoming. The $20 butterfish appetizer, a treat which I've enjoyed before, tasted like it had been prepared quite a bit earlier and looked like it was just slapped on the plate. My husband's generous portion of jerk chicken was delicious although the out of season stale vegetable side added nothing to his experience. Sadly, I believe Sensei is tired, the food, the people and our experience.
Everything at Sensei was very good. I would not say outstanding but do feel comfortable with using very very good as the proper adjectival description. The ambience is a bit plain, true. Still I liked it. We get spoiled here in Maui with all the restaurants that have outstanding ocean views, and exquisite dining rooms. So one can see why some guests might feel it is a little bit under-done. The service was as I expected, quick and friendly, from an extremely knowledgeable service person who answered every menu question easily and with a smile. I found the portions to be well worth the price and the flavors and tastes were close to perfect! I would recommend Sensei to any, except the most discriminating of hypocritical foodies. Aloha.
