Roy's Waikiki Ratings and Reviews

We actually didn't stay past review of menu: 1. the dining room reminded us of a cruise ship restaurant- tables too close and impersonal 2. waaay too loud 3. People at next table obviously smokers- overpowering odor. Too bad, I have dined ar Roy's in Maui & Palm Desert- very different atmosphere & ambiance. I have his Pacific Bounty cookbook/ love to cook & eat this food and therefore disappointed not to stay. To note however: every wait staff member who passed us said "welcome to Roy's"- that was impressive.

This is our absolute favorite restaurant in Hawaii. Regardless of which island, they are all superb. The only thing I can fault them for is prices are a bit high. But the food is beyond compare. Our favorite the butterfish never disappoints. A new appetizer the fried zucchini was also delicious. Service and wine selections also excellent. The hot lava cakes are a family favorite and set the standard for this dish. I bucked the trend and revisited the pineapple upside down cake. It has been improved with an updated recipe which I like even more than the old one.

Great meal - the sashimi platter was a delicious appetizer to share! The menu is huge so it's hard to decide, but I went with the butterfish as my main. It was pretty good, but not outstanding (not as good as the sashimi!).
Service was good, location was good, place is pretty busy. We sat on the patio which was lovely.

Outstanding Farewell Dinner
I decided to make my last night in Hawaii memorable and treat myself to dinner at Roy's. I had read good things but my visit exceeded expectations.
I had arrived a little early for my reservation so took a seat at the bar to wait for my table. A couple near me were then brought their meals, and the ladies meal looked so inviting I asked what it was. I was told it was Mac N Cheese but all I saw was amazing prawns beautifully arranged on a bed of what looked like rice but was in fact pasta. It looked stunning and the lady said it tasted even better than it looked.
So once seated I had to try it even though to me from NZ it was up there price wise at US$48. My server, was exceptional and correctly guided me to just order that dish to start as I would have found it too much if I had something before. The dish consisted of two pieces of lobster tail, along with three large prawns stuffed with crab and wrapped in prosciutto, served on a bed of orzo pasta with a highly refined cheese sauce infused with tarragon. So delectable, the delicate flavours paired in symphony, perfectly matched with the Italian Pinot Grigio I'd chosen.
Not wanting this pleasurable night to end I decided to finish with a classic Creme brûlée served with delightful snow cookies and a little fresh fruit.
A most memorable solo dinner made extra special by the exceptional food, fabulous service and lovely ambiance outside on the terrace. There was so many other interesting things on the menu I will definitely be returning when I next visit Hawaii. Mahalo.

Fantastic service from staff who know what they are talking about. The food was delicious- the restaurant layout is a bit strange and we felt a little isolated in our corner booth. Would go back without hesitation.

This was recommended by friends and didn't disappoint. The wine list Is good but few 'cheaper' options. The food menu is exceptional and, for a first visit, we opted for the taster menu without wine. We had read a previous review saying that the portions were small on this menu but we did not find this to be the case. The portions were generous and each course exceptionally tasty and well presented. The service was attentive but not intrusive. We did not feel rushed as we had in other restaurants in Oahu where the food comes out too soon and there is no rest between courses. This is more of a 'special occasion' treat, a business lunch scenario on expenses and not really one for children.

Roy's a great experience as always. Excellent menu with great options. Salads, desserts and FISH, of course to die for! Wine list more than adequate. We like the bar outside for a drink before dining, too...VERY Waikiki and in the heart of everything!

Noise level was high because a very loud and obnoxious woman was so loud that other tables couldn't carry on a conversation. At least she left half way through our meal but we felt terrible for the people sitting next to her. They cringed every time she spoke as employees walked by, looked, but never asked her to respect other guests.

Good product, well executed. But we can find equivalent at dozens of restaurants throughout the NJ-NY area. With Roy's reputation, more innovation was expected. In addition, a "Roy" wine on the menu fell far short and attaching his name to it doesn't seem a good move.

Excellent food and service. The dress is very casual, more casual than I expected. I wore dress shorts and an aloha shirt, but there were others in tank tops and sloppy shorts. The place was also too loud for a conversation. We enjoyed our dinner, but the atmosphere is not one of fine dining. We have eaten at Roy's in Pacific Grove and expected a quieter experience. I would eat here again, but would not go for a special occasion.

I have not been there for several years but the last time was wonder.
This visit was a disappointment. We got the appetizer sampler and it was only average.
The miso butterfish is usually tops and I normally love the black rice. This time the fish was something I could have gotten at a much less expensive restaurant and the black rice was overcooked. Just was sub-par. Service was good. Very friendly.
Over price for what we got.

Much of the fish and shellfish was raw. We would not go back. The food came out very quickly so maybe that's why it was a bit undercooked. I realize some people would like the speed but we felt that took away from the quality. Otherwise, the service was attentive and friendly. It just seemed like the staff was trying to turn the tables as quickly as possible, thus marring the overall experience.

This was our second visit to Roys in Waikiki. Always a pleasant dining experience. We were there for our 20 anniversary. The ambience is great, the food is amazing and the staff always prompt and professional. Thanks for the special dessert too, we'll be back!

The food was very good at Roys, the poke and the scallop entree were especially good. However it is very expensive particularly with the current weak British pound. That said - I would definitely recommend it to my foodie friends looking for somewhere quality to eat. It was the best meal we had in Honolulu by far.

Finding dinner can be hectic around 7:30pm, Especially in Waikki where there's chefs driven restaurants on every corner. We had made the reservation at Roy's a month in advance. Prior to dinner, we dined at the outside bar on Sunday afternoon. The bartender was more interested in American football than our experience. The kitchen was closed, but they offered a limited menu . We ordered a tuna poke and spring roll in between our cocktails.. The food was mediocre at best. Not surprising since the kitchen was closed.
We were still determined to get a taste from chefs Roy's famous eatery,so we keep our reservation... I could go into great detail about the dining experience, but what's the difference. The meal was below par. The grilled madako octopus and Waikki sushi roll starters were overly Americanized and lacked flavor and depth. We tried the signature moon fish dish (ona) w lobster sauce and a Ceasar salad w what was described as tuna tartare.. Both dishes sucked.. The 30min upside down pineapple cake was.. Well I'm pretty sure chef mike made. It was barely warm... No way it was in an oven for 30minutes. Evan - I'm sorry. I hope I wasn't a dick, bc you were great ! The food was not. Most of our bill was comped, But a manager never stopped by. I never complain, but at Roy's prices and for the flare, plus we were celebrating our honeymoon.. It was simply a huge disappointment. I'd recommend saving your money and going the PF changs which has a an awesome patio for people watching. Or if your still looking for a great pacific rim dinning experience hit up Alan Wongs on king street! Ask for Michael ...Or drift Across the street from Roy's for an awesome fine dining meal at House Without A Key!! Ask for James. Sorry Roy's.

I honestly wanted to like Roy's, but it just came up short in one important area...the food. I ordered the Chef specialty boneless beef ribs. The sauce was great but the meat was without a doubt just your average pot roast. Sides, desert and sushi were good, but the beef dish was literally like a golden corral pot roast flashback (terrible food)and I haven't eaten there in 15 years.

Service was very good, friendly staff. Noisy and crowded restaurant. Food is delicious but portions are small, not worth the price. I had the butterfish, even with an appetizer I was hungry after. Would like to try again but order something different before I made my final decision on the place.

Go with their signature dishes - they are amazing. Place is always packed so service is slow (not in a bad way) and it's super loud (also not bad, just to note). We did the tasting menu and it was great to get a sampling of dishes. Our favorites were the rib appetizer, nut crusted white fish entree and chocolate soufflé.

We have eaten at Roy's before and have enjoyed the dining experience. We were somewhat disappointed in the slow service. We ordered the chef's menu with wine parings. The wine would arrive, often 10 to 15 minutes before the food it was to accompany. The food was good and well prepared--we just had a very long rate between courses.

My husband and I were on a short trip to Waikiki for my birthday. I really wanted dinner with an ocean view at sunset, but by 8am that day, every waterfront restaurant was completely booked between 4:45 and 9pm! We gave up on the ocean view and picked Roy's because we'd been to a Roy's in Baltimore years ago and it was fabulous. This one didn't disappoint, either. We shared a sushi appetizer that included filet mignon and deep-fried onion that was wonderful. Hubby got a seared Ahi tuna for his entree and I got honey mustard braised short ribs -- both phenomenal taste, perfectly cooked, generous portions and tasty sides. For dessert, coffee and pineapple upside down cake for me, hubby got a chocolate cake that appeared to be like lava cake (but it disappeared so quickly I can't be sure!). I also had a Summer Sangria cocktail that was a little strong for my tastes, but still good. Service was friendly and attentive, and I even got a complimentary chocolate torte sliver for my birthday (but didn't eat much of it because I'm not a huge chocolate fan, and already had the cake). Ambiance was lovely, the place was full but didn't feel crowded, everything very well kept and clean. The prices were high but not unreasonable for the area, and honestly everything tasted so good it felt well worth the expenditure.

We had dined here on our last trip to Honolulu a few years ago, and couldn't wait to go again!! It did not disappoint. It was terrific, from start to finish. We were greeted with smiling faces and a warm welcome. We ordered the goiza for appetizers, fantastic. I had the duck, which was so tender and cooked to perfection, desert was pineapple upside down cake, another divine!! Others in our party were raving about the entire meal..service was excellent! ! The entire evening was a joy!!
