River Stone Chophouse Ratings and Reviews
First, let me say that Riverstone is a favorite restaurant; we love eating there & know we'll always have a fabulous experience, whether sharing great food with friends or a special occasion; this time, Restaurant Week with a special menu. Our server was absolutely excellent: professional, knowledgeable & personable--as were all the careful & attentive staff. The wine list is magnificent; we choose a wonderful Molly Dooker. The special menu looked good too, with 4 choices for each course. That being said, the food was uncharacteristically uneven. Very good was the Delmonico with a couple of sides. The shrimp cocktail seemed to be frozen/defrosted--and this place has a wonderful raw bar! The other starter, lobster stew, was really flavorful with a decent amount of lobster, BUT at least half the cup was filled with large potato chunks. The coffee-rubbed sirloin was fine, a bit gristly but cooked to order; however, its basalmic blueberry glaze was far too sweet & not complimentary to the meat. The side of scalloped potatoes was a sheer disaster: undercooked potatoes, too many (undercooked) onions, and burned on top. Desserts were also not successful. Carrot "cake" was a slender, soggy layer drowned in syrupy golden raisins and coconut along with a too-sugary glaze; no discernable cream cheese. Cookie Monster Cheesecake was an oreo crust with a bit of chocolate-chip-filled cheesecake filling, overwhelmed with chocolate sauce and more chips (those were pretty good, crunchy and hollow). We should've gone with the creme brulee, always a success. Some of these dishes were simply trying too hard to be creative... Unfortunately, we regularly visit exceptionally creative places, and RS suffers by comparison. They need to stick to their superb chophouse menu! In spite of last night's experience, we really enjoy RS and confidently look forward to our next meal there. We urge everyone to try their regular menu!
As indicated in my review, the atmosphere was great for my Wife and I and I would highly recommend it to all my friends and family.
I would like to give two thumbs up on our server, Brittany* (spelling), she was awesome, attentive and very personable. All servers should be like her! I believe she was the "cherry topping" for the great service received. Thanks Brittany (hope you get this) and CONGRATS.
This was our fourth visit to Riverstone, as we go there for special occasions, and this was our 30th anniversary. We started at the bar for a cocktail, and enjoyed watching the chef prepare the shellfish dishes, while he explained the differences between the local oysters.
After our drinks, we were seated, and met Charlie, who served us. Charlie was extremely knowledgeable about the menu, specials and very accommodating with our special requests for the dinner. The food was outstanding (ribeye and KC strip), perfectly prepared and delicious. The service was also outstanding, as Charlie did not intrude on our conversation, but seemed to know exactly when to appear table side. As a special touch after the meal, Charlie brought us champagne and fruit on the house. The manager stopped by during our meal to make sure everything was fine.
Riverstone will continue to be the place we go to celebrate special occasions, and we are looking forward to the next special event to celebrate!
brought my neighbor for his 75th Birthday. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The food was amazing! I had the best Cobia I have ever had and my friend had the most massive serving of BBQ bacon wrapped meatloaf. it was all very good. They even presented him with a small bowl of ice cream with a candle to complete his birthday celebration!
Well worth the cost and the trip. Wont be disappointed!
The building and sexier are perfect. The vibe is romantic and comfortable. Nice bar area and outside dining. We enjoyed our meals of lamb, pork chops and duck. Although thenplates came out Luke warm. They would have been delicious hotter. Our server was Ashton she was polite but we felt very forgotten for most of our meal there. We did watch her give better serve and time to surrounding tables. She even apologized for her absence more than halfway through our meal, but no change. 3 of us had entrees and bar drinks, dessert and coffee for $221 plus tip of 20%. Yes we tipped her even though we were not 100% s satisfied. Also 2 of the drinks came out wrong. The manager waked around greeting tables and he passed our table at least 4 times but never stopped to greet us...not sure why. He even looked right at me at one point then turned away.
We decided to venture away from the Virginia Beach dining scene during a getaway weekend and read about River Stone Chophouse online. We made a reservation and drove about 30 mins into Suffolk to check out RSC. Wow, is all I can say. The restaurant has a great Happy Hour bar area and the dining area can accommodate business casual or casual diners. On this night we observed a mix of both diners. We started out with appetizers and they were perfect. Now, let me describe the entrees in a second wow term - Fabulous! The meals were prepared no less than Chef style and their taste, aroma and quality was above par in all areas. RSC is the real deal when it comes to meat selection, portions and preparation. I can't leave out Mariah, our server, who was super attentive, taking care to turn in our orders according to how she measured when we wanted the next course. The Pork Chop and Shrimp entrees arrived piping hot and tasted as though the chef dropped them in front of us as soon as he decorated the plate. The sides were succulent and seasoned perfectly with the right mixture of spices. Ken, the GM, stopped by to chat with us and he couldn't have been a more gracious gentlemen and restaurant management connoisseur. His passion about working at River Stone Chophouse was evident and that was a true indication on why this location and brand is working so well as by early evening the restaurant was almost packed with people waiting in the lobby for a table. Kudos to the the bar staff for being so friendly and preparing excellent cocktails. The business plan for RSC is working and is a resounding success. If you're ever in the Suffolk, Norfolk or Virginia Beach area you need to visit River Stone Chophouse and please ask for Mariah's section. She's great and will take excellent care of you.
The food was great- a little disappointed that we did not have a whole lobster for the surf/turf for two considering the price.
Also, for the price expected to receive a little more personable service. The server was great for the first part of the meal but once we were done it's like she forgot about us- no more refills- did not pick up the bill immediately. I would think if you want us to come back- you are going to treat me just as well at the end as you did the beginning- to be honest my husband remembers the end service better.
No one even inquired if we were there for a special occasion.
We are new to the Hampton Roads area & will keep looking for that special occasion restaurant
When we arrived the restaurant was relatively empty and the hostess would not accommodate a request to sit further away from the entrance.
Our server was great and the food was fantastic.
Despite the issues with seating I would recommend the restaurant to others.
Our whole experience was excellent from the moment we walked in until we left. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and the service was on point! The food was so flavorful and we enjoyed every last bite! I would highly recommend Riverstone Chophouse, especially if you are celebrating a special occasion! We were celebrating our 6th Wedding Anniversary.
Outstanding doesn't begin to describe River Stone! Highly recommended for romantic dinners, business dinners, or evening out with friends.
Immediately greeted at the door by friendly staff. Visited the cozy and causal bar area prior to dinner. Bar staff was awesome. We enjoyed some great appetizers along with a bottle of wine. Wine selection is amazing and affordable. Plenty of cocktails to select from as well.
Once seated in the dinning room, service continued to be exceptional. The atmosphere is relaxing, tastefully decorated, and the tables are semi-private and not crowded. The food was delicious. The manager, Ken, was on top of everything. My meal (steak of course!) was perfect in every aspect.
The drive is a quick 20 minutes from Oyster Point in Newport News. Well worth a visit!
I drive from New Jersey to visit my sister in Chesapeake; and we always go to the Riverstone Chop House. This past Friday was no different! Wonderful dinner, drinks, and service. Mr Dodd; the Director of Operations is so nice and helpful! If you are close, you NEED to go!!
What a nice evening! We met up with some friends for an evening out. We started out at the bar, which was busy and fun...then moved to the dining room for delicious dinner...oysters rock, summer salad, scallops, strip steaks and pork chop. Sides were roasted cauliflower, broccolini, & spinach. Everything was perfectly cooked! We sure enjoyed it-Great place to enjoy an evening out either on a date or with friends! The staff always makes you feel comfortable and we will continue to remain loyal customers.
Combo Date Night / Birthday celebration. Food and service was great. Just the right amount of attention, met our needs but not intrusive. Of course Riverstone is Chophouse is pricey, but unlike many restaurants you leave feeling you got your money's worth for the occasion.
Outstanding food, average service. For a chophouse at this price point, you would expect the server to be more engaging. From the very beginning, the maitre d' didn't pull the chair out for the lady to be seated. We asked if they serve prosecco by the glass. The waitress didn't know and had to go ask, although it was on the wine list by the glass. We were then told they were out of prosecco but didn't offer an alternative suggestion. We then ordered another sparkling wine but they brought a still wine. We had to ask for the Amuse-Bouche because it wasn't brought out with the wine and they had already started setting the table for the appetizer. We ordered the Grand Shellfish Plateau which was outstanding! We ordered a bottle of red wine with our main course. I think the red wine should have been opened when ordered so it can breathe before being served. Our wine was opened at the table and poured immediately. After the initial wine pour, our wine glasses were never topped off by the server. Once our main courses arrived, the vegetables were cold and the potatoes were forgotten. Once the warm vegetables arrived, we had finished our main course we we had to bring them home. After my wife ate one of her three lamb chops, she noticed a long black hair on her plate. No one in our party had black hair. Overall, the quality and taste of the food was outstanding! It's just a shame the evening was ruined by things that should have been caught by the server. There was no offer of adjustment to our $465 bill for the cold veggies or hair. The manager said "we gave you replacements to go" so it's still full price. Our first River Stone experience was completely flawless because we had Charles Rizzo as our server. The next two visits were with a different waitress and sadly disappointing. The overall lesson? Ask for Charles when you make your reservation!
Way too dark. My wife is visually impaired & had trouble walking to the bathroom. Later, they dimmed the lights even more. Can't cook a steak. Ordered a filet mignon, medium rare. I ended up with a well done steak that was dry and quite chewy. Waiters were fine when they were at the table, but otherwise, hard to find. Friends with us also experienced food that was average. Alcohol content in our drinks was less then average. I couldn't detect alcohol in my drinks, nor my wife's. For dessert, my wife & a friend ordered the Chef's Choice, a Neapolitan Brownie cake. It boasted of Vanilla, Strawberry & Chocolate cream layers with a brownie bottom. My wife is a carb junkie & she only ate the brownie. The cream layers had a gelatin type movement with a foamy Vanilla, Strawberry & Chocolate appearance, but were difficult to cut through.
The only critique is the breading on the calamari - there was a type of corn meal that was used that was a departure from traditional calamari preparation. It was a distraction and was not enjoyable. My wife and I did enjoy the sauce that accompanied the appetizer. Since there may be some diners who may like the corn meal breading, my recommendation would be to offer both a traditional breading and the corn meal breading as a choice for the diner. This option should not be beyond the ability of a fine dining establishment.
Like some of the other reviews I've read they are overpriced and trying to be something they are not, which is a true chophouse. My wife ordered the grape salad which was DROWNED in vinegar to the point you couldn't eat it.I have had many dry aged ribeyes (my favorite). This was the worst one ever, absolutely no seasoning at all. Our server was way more interested in chit chatting with other guests at a table behind us than doing her job.Very disappointing to say the least
I love the ambience and the server was well versed and in depth of explaining the menu. The food overall was good. I loved the shrimp but do NOT recommend the meatloaf. The Chef's Chicken Breast Wontons should be on the menu because they were delish. I would recommend this restaurant for any occasion.
