Red O - Newport Beach Ratings and Reviews

Overall the food was delicious, great atmosphere, beautiful decor, but service was a little off for my experience. First, the server for my table does not have basic knowledge for wine recommendation. He did not answer my questions on wine recommendations. Second, I thought he was a little rude after his staff had place a plate of churro which said "happy anniversary" on our table by mistake and we told him nicely that we didn't know order this. His response was ( word for word) " You can have it". We did not ask for it and he made everyone at my table feel like we want free food. If I were to spend over $300 for my dinner I deserve better service than a server making me feel like I'm at Macdonald! Third, after my friends ate the free churros he came back 30 minutes later asking if we would like dessert. Well hello, you should've brought us the menu 30 minutes ago when we finished we dinner not after you threw us a plate of churros by mistake and then ask us if we want dessert. Of course not, after everything I was fed up and wanted to leave. I don't feel like spending any more money at Red O! I came here because my boyfriend recommended that it has great food and service, but after this experience with him and my friends I will not be coming back. I hope Red O can train their staffs better at word choice to customer and better knowledge about your wine selections.

So much to choose from, traditional upscale Mexican or steak and seafood. I come twice a week because both experiences are truly fantastic. Sometimes I just want a margarita other times wine. Both cocktail and wine list are amazing! You can't go wrong, I forgot to mention brunch is also to die for.

Our server did not get the order correctly and it was not busy, in fact the restaurant opened shortly before we arrived. She added a taco that we did not order and did not bring the side of bacon that we did order. The guacamole was late and the box we requested for our left over taco did not contain our food.

Food was good, atmosphere was fun and lively. Our waiter was nice however I'm not sure if he wanted us to leave as soon as possible or if they are trained to be overly aggressive with clearing the table and getting you in and out. We were a group of 6 women meeting for dinner and drinks. We were hoping to have a drink or two with some chips and guacamole before ordering entrees. Our waiter continually came over to take our order even after telling him we wanted to catch up for a bit. Once dinner was served and a few people were finished eating it was like vultures coming over to take our plates as quickly as possible. I had one more sope and twice they took my plate away from me when I was not done (both times I let them know I was not finished and to please put my plate back). They also cleared a drink before we were finished. We left a little sooner than planned and didn't order dessert because we felt so rushed.

On a Saturday night this restaurant was too noisy, too Newport and not enough good Mexican food. The Mexican entrees were mediocre. Despite the crowd, the wait staff was attentive. Probably better for hanging out at the bar, where too loud music, TV sets and raucous conversation are to be expected.

Always a great dining experience - food is consistently delicious and they have changed up the menu with some great additions.
We had a server, Hollie G., who is also a new addition for the restaurant. She is friendly and very knowledgable about the menu offering recommendations when asked.
We will be back.

Fantastic. I forgot our servers name but we were a party of 12. Had her pick the food. And it was a home run. Our daughter's 22nd birthday was outstanding. Total experience from changing our table from the back to the front, to Ben the valet guy being a good sport with 12 college students. And the food, as selected, was outstanding!!

White Tablecloths. Beautiful decor. Sparkling Staff. The food was divine. The Sunday "Brunch" menu Lobster Eggs Benedict - the absolute best Benedict I have had around the world. Simply divine! Dress up a little when you go. I like the main room, but there is also a sun room which is glass enclosed and lovely. The bar area is beautiful. The service was impeccable.

This is my second trip to Red O, the experience was even better than my first visit and my group enjoyed celebrating a birthday together. Great service and great food. A little spendy, but totally worth it. (and there are many price range options on the menu)

This was my third visit and it was still wonderful. The food was outstanding as was the service. Our server really knew the dishes and his recommendations were spot on. It is pricey but it is worth it for special occasions.

The service is what made Red O great to my wife and I. We've been twice, once for New Year's Eve and now once for our anniversary. Our server went out of his way to ensure we felt celebrated, unhurried and enjoy our evening. The food and drinks were very good, but the service is what stood out.

Had been there for dinner, thought I would try it for brunch. It was very subpar. Eggs were over cooked and dry. Crazy prices for a couple of eggs $16, but then it IS Newport Beach. The pancakes that my daughter ordered were very nice with fruit and fresh whipped cream. They sat us at a huge table for three. It was difficult to talk as it was loud and we were too far from each other (there were three of us). Won't be going back.

Service was excellent. Ambiance on the patio exquisite. Food was so-so. Tortilla soup was extremely thick almost stew like. Not appealing at all. Sadly, the beef dishes are accompanied with selections from the appetizer menu. There are too many exquisite Latin vegetable side dishes that would have enhanced the beef entrees.

The service was very uneven, they seemed confused about who does what..when. We have had the pleasure of eating several times at topolabampo and fontera grill in Chicago where the food and service is excellent and this was quite a let down.

Red O is a quintessential Newport Beach. The vibe is adult fun with great food. Be prepared for some amazing food and come "Dressed to the nines" because this is, well, Newport Beach. The noise level is fairly loud so if you're looking for a quiet, intimate romantic evening this is not the place. If you want a fun and energetic adult crowd where style is the norm and people watching is a non stop game, then this is your place.

The food was excellent. We sat on the outside patio and loved that seating area because it is quiet out there and cozy. I had the salmon and it was the best salmon I have tasted in some time because the seasoning was so wonderful.
My only complaint is that this place is pretty expensive so I cannot justify going on a regular basis.

We were looking forward to dining here and the Red O did not disappoint on any level. The lobster and the scallops were succulent and cooked to perfection. The sauces were complex and the presentation appealing. Our waitress Katie did an outstanding job of making us feel welcome and of making the evening special. Well done!

They take reservations for our large party which was nice. The steak and lobster we ordered was good but the steak was well done when we asked for medium rare. They didn't even attempt to fix it or offer anything else to compensate. Appetizers were great. Pricey but it's a special occasion kind of place.

I have been a customer since it opened. I am incredibly disappointed that the restaurant has dumbed down its menu to bland Newport Beach cuisine. Gone are the upscale menus, and in their place is a plasticized one pager. Gone are the innovative guac's. What's left is a wholly pedestrian Mexican offering with a bunch of high priced steaks that have some pseudo Mexican feature. I hope that Rick Bayless reconsiders having his name associated with the current Red O. Chef Bayless is associated with some of the most innovative Mexican food in the world - and he should run from selling his name to this establishment. Bayless's O'Hare Torta shop has more Mexican flavor than anything on the Red O menu now. A sad loss.
