Sonoma Grille Pittsburgh Ratings and Reviews
The food was excellent, but it took 2 hours for our entrees to arrive. We saw two tables around us have to leave because they had been waiting for an hour and 45 minutes and had show reservations that they had to leave for. Our waiter walked by us several times while we put our empty martini glasses on the edge of the table to try to give a hint that we needed more drinks, but he never asked. My husband's soup came out without a spoon and we had to flag someone down for that, which took another 5 minutes. Very very disappointed.
We have gone to Sonoma over the years and up until Saturday night, 2/18/17, have always had a good experience. We were seated and waited 25 minutes for anyone to approach the table to order drinks. @ an hour before we got any food( bread). Our waiter was great and have had him before, but he was definitely covering. Either there were issues with the kitchen or other staff. Most disappointing was a gentleman who worked there, either the manager or owner whom walked all around but didn't talk to anyone even though other patrons were having similar experiences. One table never even ordered food but after an hour requested their bill and left. As a note, Sonoma did take our appetizers off the bill and gave us desert and champagne as a token. Our waiter was the only contact we had and though he was apologetic, it was like management had no idea how to address the issues. We enjoy a long dinner but 3 hours waiting for service at every level was a bit much.
Unfortunately I was disappointed in the restaurant. Our reservations were for 615, and we were seated promptly. Upon seating the hostess asked if we had a show to go to following dinner. We replied yes, the show was at 8PM. She said to make sure to tell our waiter. The service was extremely slow that evening. Despite the fact that we probably placed our order for dinner around 6:40 PM, we were not served until 7:35 PM. It was certainly not the waiters fault, and he was very apologetic as well as nice. He was aware that we had a show to attend at eight. I never ate dinner so fast in my life, in order to get to Heinz Hall on time. Consequently, my stomach ache all evening from eating so fast. In looking around the restaurant That evening, other people appeared to be experiencing the same issue. That evening, other people appeared to be experiencing the same issue. I would say the food was presented very nicely, but all in all it was of average taste. Given my experience that evening, I probably would not frequent the restaurant again .
My husband and I have not been to Sonoma Grille in a while. We made a reservation well in advance and early on a Saturday (6pm) because we were going to the POPS. We were about 15 mins. early and were seated back towards the restrooms and kitchen entrance. It wasn't the most desireable place to sit. Next time we'll request a different spot. For our meal, we decided to try a family style meal. It took an incredibly long time. We were filling up on bread and wine and asked to change our order because we were getting full but we were told it was too late. The meal was delicious but we couldn't understand why it took so long. It was a good thing we gave ourselves plenty of time so we were not late for the show but we were there almost 2 hours. Overall we were pleased and won't let this experience deter us from going back but we'll remember this experience and try to make different requests/decisions next time. BTW, the salted caramel creme brulee was the best we have ever had!!
This has always been one of our favorite restaurants before a theater performance, however this last visit was extremely disappointing. The service was poor due to many inefficiencies. The soup, vegetables, tempura shrimp and salmon were fair. The one bright spot was the chocolate mousse. The presentation was quite impressive and it was very tasty.
The service was not very good. Our waitress disappeared after serving our drinks. My wife ordered a fish special of the evening, after taking 45 minutes for entrees to make it to table the fish was raw.We dine out 6 to 8 times a month and this was by far the worst we have had.
We waited 45 minutes before being served our salads. After waiting a total of 75 minutes for our entrees, we walked out. The service delays were atrocious, not just for us but for everyone around us. There didn't seem to be a problem with lack of servers; more with the kitchen. This used to be a good restaurant, but no more. We will never go back.
It was awful!! What happened to the Sonoma Grill we knew and loved?! It has been our favorite restaurant since it opened. It had a great wine list, farm to table menu was outstanding, fresh and changed with the season. Great wait staff. We were there in the fall, 2016. You were remodeling but it was everything else we expected. Friday Feb 3 was a terrible experience. I felt we were at a totally different restaurant. The wine list was different with few CA wines. There were only a few wines offered by the glass. The fresh farm to table menu was replaced by very heavy poorly prepared selections. My husband had the octopus salad that was burned black, tough and unable to cut or eat. I mentioned it to the waitress who just removed his plate. He then ordered the fish special of the night, another poorly prepared dried out tough fish. He tried a few bites, uneatable. I had the Sonoma salad that was very good. I had the pork chop for dinner that was very very dry. I ask the waitress what happened to the delicious selections, where you could order 1, 2 or 3 items with dipping sauces. She said that was now the bar menu. We ask for a dessert menu. At that point the waitress disappeared for 1/2 hour. I suspect that was because there were so many complaints by patrons not receiving their entre and now it would be too late to make the show when it came. 2 tables around us left without eating because they were out of time. They had 6:15 pm reservations which was timely for an 8 pm show. We never did receive a dessert menu from our waitress so ask the receptionist. He said you don't a dessert menu but another wait staff, over hearing, did get us one. We didn't have time since now it was 7:30 pm and we had a show at 8 pm. Our reservations were at 5:45 pm. This review is long but we were so shocked how a restaurant goes from best in the city for us to not sure we will come back. There are many downtown choices for the cost.
We chose this restaurant based on its proximity to our hotel and business conference and the menu listed on the website. Our party included an omnivore, a pescetarian, and a vegetarian. The menu we saw online had something each of us was excited about. When we got to the restaurant, we discovered the menu was almost completely different. None of the items we were planning on ordering were on the menu.
The restaurant was almost empty, but we had to wait almost 15 minutes before our waiter came by. After 20 minutes of sitting there, we finally had some water. We ordered our appetizer and wine at the same time. Our app came out before the wine and since we were sharing a cheese platter and had chosen our wine to go with the cheese, this was unacceptable. Also the wine portions were extremely small. We noticed that the couple next to us also got their drinks after their entrees were served.
Another waiter (!! we saw 3 or 4 waiters and almost no customers! why the wait?)came by to remove the cheese platter and our serving plates. He placed our dirty silverware directly on the table and took the plates. This is the mark of our poorly-trained staff: you replace the silver if it has been used! I worked in a pancake house as a teenager and this was standard practice.
Our entrees came out and all of them were just terrible. My mussels were dry and tasteless and appeared to be swimming in a "broth" of water. I am not exaggerating - it was clear and tasteless. All 3 us took one bite of our entrees and asked for the check so we could leave and go to a better restaurant. The only good thing that happened at this restaurant was that the manager comped our meal and drinks.
We were there on a Monday evening, so it was very quite. The service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive, so that was very good. The menu is interesting but very limited. I'm a pescaterian, and there were only two fish dishes (salmon and seafood paella). OK I guess for a meat eater, but was disappointing for me.
This was previously our favorite dining venue in Pittsburgh. However, within the past year since we were there, many changes that we are sad to see. The wines-by-the-glass offerings have been drastically cut, maybe by 70%. However, biggest disappointment was the menu. We were looking forward to the seafood options with tapas-style and sauces of choice. All gone and replaced by standard fare that doesn't even hint at Sonoma/California. We did appreciate the anniversary dessert and coffees. However, too much was missing from what we remember to be a great place for dining. Maybe a good place for happy hour...
It has been awhile since we have dined at the Sonoma Grille. We always enjoyed the restaurant, and this visit did not disappoint. The menu had changed; the food was excellent. They made some modifications to the restaurant décor, which was nice. We enjoy this place and will definitely be back!!
We had only been to the Sonoma Grille once for a Christmas Party and received a gift card upon leaving from my husband's employer. Since we were coming into town anyway, we decided to use the gift card for dinner. The menu was "creative" so I ordered steak which was done perfectly! My husband ordered paella which had octopus, mussels, oysters, and other things I won't eat. He loved it. Our server was very pleasant and patient with us explaining some of the items on the menu. I believe her name is Vickery. All in all we had a most pleasant and delicious dinner.
We went to Sonoma for New Years Eve. We have been here numerous times before without issues. This time our waiter was rude, flustered, slow and actually gave bad reviews for current menu items. He forgot several items/drinks and had to be frequently reminded. The food was not worth the price. Food was marginal. I would not recommend this for dinner.
Food is somewhat different, interesting. It arrived warm, not hot. Service was very slow. One member of our group order was never placed. His food arrived after we had all finished. Never the less, they did remove it from the bill.
Some of the staff seemed aloof as though they were passing through and not actually involved.
Very disappointing experience. Our server was bumbling around, forgetting things and telling us (politely) how busy he was, just to give him "a minute to catch up". We waiting long to receive our drink order. Our soup came but we had no spoons. Items such as bread were forgotten from our main entrée until we asked for it. The restaurant was not particularly crowded so I'm not sure what the problem was. Also, we were celebrating a special occasion and it was noted in the reservation and confirmed on the 10:45pm confirmation call (that's really late at night to call to confirm a reservation!!) and the waiter either chose to ignore the birthday or was not informed as no candle or desert was offered. Very disappointed. For the price, I would not return when there are many other places to choose.
Waiter did not pay attention to request one meal. Had to redo meal and it took an additional 20 minutes. 2nd meal was ice cold, but did not send back.
Host was confused when entering which made for awkward seating.
Coffee only warm
Restaurant deducted meal from invoice, but the waiter has only one responsibility and that is to listen to the request.
My five year old daughter and I came here after seeing The Nutcracker. We were about 45 minutes early for our reservation and before they started serving from their dinner menu, but the manager and our waitress were so accommodating to the two of us and I feel they went out of their way to make us feel welcome and have a very nice meal. We shared an appetizer, she had mac and cheese from the kids menu, and I had the delicious ravioli and a glass of wine. We both had dessert. This was the third time I've been to Sonoma and the service keeps getting better each time. I normally wouldn't bring my kids to this nice a of a place, but it was 4:30 on a Saturday and it was a special pre-Christmas date girls date and it did not disappoint. It was a perfect meal for a special day and I hope to make it a yearly tradition for the two of us.
We enjoyed a pre-concert dinner for three. At first I was disappointed that the menu
had changed (again) and a few of my favorites weren't there but was impressed with
the newer creations, sampling my guests selections as well as thoroughly enjoying my own.
My guests were visiting foreign educators and enjoyed the experience.
The servers in my past visits were always were cordial, knowledgeable, and competent, and last Friday was no exception. The total experience of dining anywhere in the Cultural District, then a short walk to the theater makes for a pleasant and easy- to- plan evening.
We were tough customers as we are on a clean eating, organic, , non-dairy, etc diet and they accommodated us with no issue! Mike was awesome in ensuring everything adhered! We had the grass-fed roast with mushrooms and broccoli and a salad! Will definitely be back. Fantastic service!
The food we order was good starting with the delicious variety of breads. My husband who wanted to go elsewhere loved his pork chop and was glad we chose Sonoma. Our server seemed to be very busy trying to keep up. Seemed like they were understaffed. We sat for 10 minutes before being greeted and having our drink order taken. We told the server we had theater tickets. We allowed 1 hour 45 minutes for dinner. Our plates were cleared with plenty of time left for dessert and coffee. However it took 25 minutes for our server to come to our table and ask if we wanted dessert. Unfortunately we no longer had time. We have eaten here previously and don't remember having the same problem.
Four of us often come to the Sonoma Grille before the Ballet. We enjoyed it again this week but found that the prices on the menu had increased greatly from last year; not the good value it was. And a traditional creme brulee would be welcome in addition to flavored ones.
We will be looking for a new favorite restaurant in downtown Pittsburgh. After dining at Sonoma frequently over the past several years, we were disappointed three of the past four times we have dined there. The menu has been substantially redesigned and favorites, such as duck, have been removed. The management and staff has been nearly completely changed from what we could observe and the service has deteriorated with inattentive servers and specials sold out early and servers not advised. The quality of the food, if one does not mind waiting for extended periods, is still very good but overall, this restaurant in our estimation is no longer worth the price.
Our experience in the past with this restaurant has always been very positive, but our experience recently was very different. The service was very poor as follows
When we asked for another table (the one initially offered was in a high traffic area), the host was very off-putting about the request - basically stating that changing would mess up their seating plan (most tables were unoccupied at the time)
We were seated near the back of the restaurant and we have been seated there before without any problem. But, that night it was like a 'keystone cops' routine with the servers being directed on what to do and where to go after they had exited the kitchen area. This is new and not at all pleasant - keep the dining area for diners not the staff and their handlers.
We were over-charged for the wine (not much but still) - the server said, 'oh the menu must be wrong' and then when to get the menu (we were correct) and instead of just offering to correct the problem, said he need to get the manager. We were getting past happy at that point and said never mind.
Coffee was served that was cold - it was replaced but still required me to ask. This is something the server should have noticed before bringing it out.
Servers hit my wife's chair with the device that they set the trays on - no apology.
Another interaction with the host as we left was also unpleasant.
We have always looked forward to visiting this restaurant but now -- doubtful we'll go back.
The food was exceptional once again. We always visit this restaurant when visiting the 'burgh. + wine list/wine flights are great - they even have a make your own which can be a great value
food is so delicious, with garnishes and combinations you wouldn't think of, but taste great
service is always good, even when they get busy
Attached to Courtyard Marriott, they have delivered wine glasses to my room, they even asked what wines we had so they could bring the right glasses, since we had sparkling and red, that was a bonus
revised menu and wine list - it was all good!
