it was a bit loud for conversation for a party of 7. I'd recommend larger tables be put in one section of a restaurant where the speakers are lower or turned off. i don't think it would impact the overall ambience, but it would help conversation for big parties.
Food and service are good, but it is really lively on Saturday (and I assume Friday) nights, so be a little careful. I couldn't really hear my partner well, and the server barely at all. By the time we were leaving (around 9.30pm) tables were being removed so a band could set up. I'd advise anyone wanting a meal with a partner or small group to arrive early/go during the week.
Roofers Union is a nice neighborhood spot for a casual get-together with friends. From the three times that I have been here, I've found that the service leaves much to be desired. One time my friend's ID was lost behind the bar, and another time I was ignored completely at the bar until my fiance ordered a drink for me. Very frustrating.
Value of the food is okay. Great beer list.
On a repeat visit, my party was pleasantly surprised when server (Emily) approached my wife and asked if she were the lady dancing in a two-year-old video (on Emily's smartphone). Turns out, Emily had been so taken by this dancing grandmother that she had recorded her. And saved it. And remembered us when we came in again.
Go for the food, the atmosphere, the beverages, but - most of all - for servers like Emily.
The happy hour was very decently priced! I wish that the HH menu had been online though. Reservations aren't needed for happy hour, and there was only really one group table within the bar. We made it work (with a group of 4) by pulling out chairs in a corner, but I wouldn't recommend the bar area for groups in general.
Roofers is a perfect brunch place to take friends visiting from out of town. The second floor location with a full view of vibrant 18th street and the colorful old buildings of Adams Morgan is always a winner. Comfortable seating. Food is good and dependable - the home fries the most flavorful, good portions and reasonably priced. One of the few restaurants in this area we go back to frequently.
Had a party of 11 they were very accommodating, would recommend making reservations early as it looks like they fill up pretty fast for brunch. The drinks and food were great. Great views of Adams Morgan. Staff was also friendly. Good spot to get together with friends. Not a quiet place but not too loud either.
Install some noise dampening panels! Went for dinner on a Friday night with a party of 5. I could barely hear the person sitting next to me. We had to yell to talk across the table. The restaurant space, decor, and view out the large windows were great, the food was very good, and the staff was friendly, but we couldn't wait to leave so we could actually interact. There is a bar in the same space as the restaurant, and the bar-goers were super loud and spilling into the dining space (even crowding around a table of diners). Most of the dining tables were empty for Friday dinner, and I can understand why.
The staff was awesome and drinks & appetizers were great, but we were very underwhelmed with the dinner menu. The food we had was not good- sorry- it was just plain awful. The sunflower pesto flatbread tasted like dirt. The hamburger was far from the medium-well that was ordered and the chipotle aioli was not good at all. The french onion dip was very good and that was the only plus.
Just very disappointed. We left expensively very out of pocket and hungry.
Went here for brunch on a Saturday morning, and the experience was better than I anticipated. The food was DELICIOUS (I recommend the chicken & waffles), the decor was beautiful, and the view from the floor to ceiling windows added a beautiful touch to a great brunch. Plus, ther were bottomless mimosas! I definitely recommend breakfast/ brunch at Roofers Union.
It is very unfortunate but the AC was not working. There should have been a sign on the door. It was miserable in there. Went for ladies brunch and we got the $15 unlimited mimosas but could not even make it justifiable because of the heat. We had to leave. They did not discount anything. They should not have been open at all. I feel very sorry for the employees.
So it's not the worst place, and i'd still eat there in a pinch but after our second time eating here I was pretty disappointed again. Restaurant was really uncomfortably warm and service felt perfunctory: water glasses were filled carelessly and we were rushed into ordering entrees quickly even though we'd been early and there were plenty of empty tables around us. Food was just okay - steak and moules both good. Pasta dish small and very salty.
Roofers Union was wonderful, as per usual. The menu is small, which mostly means that everything on it is amazing. Their brunch menu is definitely catered toward a savory palette, so no waffles or french toast. There are not a lot of vegetarian options, either, but the people in our party were able to find things they really liked. I would definitely recommend.
Went to Roofers Union on a sunny Saturday in April - the roof was PACKED (clearly the cool spot to be for brunch) so we skipped the roof and checked in for a 7:45 dinner reservation a little early. The hostess had no trouble seating us early which was nice.
The cocktail list wasn't that impressive, but my boyfriend and I both ordered off-the-menu drinks and the bartender made them to our standards. We got the special (buratta) for dinner and it was excellent - totally worth the $10 price tag. Our meal came out quickly and everything was cooked well. I got a salad and added grilled chicken, my boyfriend ordered steak frites, and we got brussel sprouts to split. My salad was great, as were the brussel sprouts. Steak wasn't the best but this isn't a steak place, so we should have expected that.
The waitress was prompt, made recommendations, and got us our check promptly. We overall thought this was a good little spot for dinner, and we'd recommend it for anyone looking for a moderately priced date night or group dinner.
Overall, this was a very disappointing dining experience. The Brussel sprouts were so greasy that they made my boyfriend sick. We waited 10 mins. for a server and had to go ask the host to find her. Thankfully the manager politely apologized and offered to comp a cauliflower appetizer. Unfortunately, the shishito peppers in this dish were overcooked, and the flavor fell flat. I think they have some good ideas here but are failing on execution. It was clear that the manager really cared, but the rest of the staff was not on board.
We walked in without a reservation and were told that we'd have an hour wait, even though there were empty tables. We waited at the bar and had a cocktail because there was no rush. While we were waiting, I decided to check the website for a reservation and saw that I could get one for 4 people with only a 15 minute wait. We were then seated "promptly" and canceled our name from the waiting list. The greeters should really use their heads and seat people if there are openings! The food was fabulous and the service was fantastic. Would definitely go back but will make sure we have a reservation.
