Red, the Steakhouse Cleveland Ratings and Reviews
We made reservations to celebrate a 30th anniversary. We had planned to go to a Tribe playoff game, which unfortunately did not happen so had made early reservations and kept that time slot. The place was virtually empty and the hostess sat us in the bar area. We asked if there were other tables and she said no those were for reservations. The food was great and the waiter awesome but it was not the setting we expected at this price point. We were in a loud bar setting, with people in and out for happy hour. The most frustrating thing was upon leaving after appetizers, dinner and dessert, all tables in the regular area were still empty. There are other similar high end steak places in the area with just as good of food with much better ambiance. Perhaps the regular dining area had this as well but I'm not sure how you get the opportunity to sit there.
We had an absolutely outstanding evening! We had an appetizer, wine, entrees, and deserts, so it definitely got a little pricy, but overall one of the best meals I’ve ever had. In my opinion the tables were a little close together, and it was a bit loud in the restaurant, but overall OUTSTANDING!
We had a wonderful meal, the steaks are absolutely superb and my date and I were both blown away with the quality. The filet mignon was the best steak I've ever had. It's probably difficult to get out the door for less than $100/person after sides, appetizers, drinks, and gratuity but that's why it's the perfect place for a special occasion. It is definitely worth the money. Great American style sides (one side will serve 2+ people) and the service was wonderful, our waiter Jim even brought over complimentary beignets to celebrate our anniversary. Highly recommend!
My husband and I have both been here once prior to this occasion. We met at the downtown location for his birthday with both sets of our parents. The sides definitely serve 2-3 peoe, steaks were cooked perfectly. I really enjoyed having an option for a half bottle of wine. The donuts we had for dessert are an in-house delicious treat for his birthday. Table sat 6 comfortably, the ambience is very subtle and is great for a special occasion. I would have rated our experience higher if our server could take a joke. She didn't seem to be in the best mood and we enjoy engaging with the staff.
We went to Red to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We also were seeing Book of Mormon that evening so we had an earlier reservation than we normally would. The restaurant had called me earlier to confirm my reservation but when we showed up and gave our name the girl did not have us down. She was actually questioning if we indeed had a reservation until my husband had to get a little stern asking why did they call to confirm then? Only then did she look a little more and somehow did find our reservation and we were sat. Red is very small and can be loud. I'm glad they put us at a booth so it wasn't as crowded as they little row that we've sat at before. Our waitress was efficient but had no personality at all and barely spoke with us. Again she was efficient though. We always had drinks and water. We ordered the calamari to start and it was underwhelming. It smelled amazing but it wasn't as crispy as we would've liked. Our steaks were cooked to perfection, this is the main reason why we love coming to Red, it's one of the best steaks I've ever had. Our sides of macaroni and green beans were great as well. Left stuffed after we were given complimentary donuts that were warm and fluffy, the raspberry sauce I could eat by the spoonful. We left very full and satisfied for the most part. Didn't feel as special this time and normally I love to come here for my birthday but I think we will be going elsewhere this year. Too many new restaurants to try in Cleveland so it takes a lot to keep us coming back.
Was expecting more; steak was good, not great. For the price, including the a la carte sides and drinks, I expected to be blown away. The bread was actually the most memorable part of the meal, which is not what you want to walk away from a $200+ meal saying. Waiter was average at best, seemed like we were intruding on his day by being there. Tables are very close together, could hear full conversations of people all around me, booths in the bar actually look like they would have been a better, more private option.
First time at Red after being aware of the restaurant since it opened. Overall, it was a nice experience. However, the food and wine experience did not match the price point. I've been to other restaurants around the United States where I enjoyed much better food quality and wine service for the same per plate cost. Two examples - The wine list at Red is a book. That's great if you have a sommelier or beverage manager who carefully manages the list and stock. The bottle we ordered was not available. It's hard to reset and find a new wine choice after carefully reviewing and picking from an extensive list. The whipped potatoes were...really whipped, almost soupy and lacking in flavor. Again, not major things, but when you're paying a la carte pricing with entrees in the $50 - $60 range, you expect better.
