Pikayo Ratings and Reviews
I don't get the hype. This place was underwhelming. Biggest redeeming factor is the service. The wait staff was engaging, helpful, attentive, and professional. The rest was average.
Started with the 'beet salad'. It's NOT a salad. It's a roll of beets with goat cheese between each beet wheel. It was good but not what you would expect.
Next we shared the foie gras. Typically this dish is spreadable and served with some sort of bread. Not here. It's patty like and served with plantains. It was also good but not the level you expect from a place like this.
Finally we had the sea bass. It's cooked with the skin which was supposed to give it a crunch according to the waiter but instead it made it very oily. I peeled it off and ate it without the skin.
Overall the meal was not memorable. For being rated as highly as it was, we expected more. We ate at marmalade tonight and it is not even comparable. Disappointed in the food but the wait staff made it a pleasant experience. For the money there are better options.
One other thing I found odd and a bit off-putting. Not one fish option was local. Every fish was from another geography. No local flavors or sourcing.
My husband and i went on a date at pikayo on our last night in Puerto Rico while my mother watched our kids. All i can say was our food and virgin cocktails were incredibly divine, nothing else in Puerto rico that we ate came close to this good, of course. We had looked forward to the famed puerto Rican foods, going so far as to watch food network shows with Anthony bordain and andrew Zimmermann on their trips to the different cuisine highlights on the island, but we didn't find that the local offerings from the cayey lechoneras to the luquillo kiosk mofongos to blow our minds.
Thank God for Pikayo! I ordered the potato and truffle soup which was absolutely incredible-i had to eat it so slowly as each bite was intensely savory and complex. I was still marveling at the flavors and creamyness down to the last streaks of color in my bowl, I also ordered the four jumbo shrimp. My husband ordered the puerto rican tasting menu and shared some bites with me, the beef stew stack had intense flavor, the Mofongo was incredibly original and packed a wake up call of freshness. We also got virgin mojitos and a pinacoloda, they were well priced and the best we ever had. Consider the pinacoloada a dessert, I savored it in the same way I did my soup...blissfully mediating on every sip. The atmosphere was classy and upscale, the volume level was quite nice, enough background noise to make conversation private without needing to speak loudly across the table.
I cannot recommend pikayo enough, clearly, they use pure, fresh, local and real ingredients whereas many other restaurants are sourcing imported, premixed or low quality fare which translates to bland, uneventful flavors. Pikayo was one of the best highlights of our trip, and the best food we ate in Puerto rico. The prices are reasonable for the stellar quality and service. My husband and i drank at least 2-3 liters of water due to the instant refilling vigil of one of our three or four waiters. Wow, what an experience!
Compared to other times it was not as good, for the price you are paying falled below expectations. The same food ordered in previous ocassions did not tasted the same. At one point it was warm and I was literally sweating. The waiter was either the greatest.
We live this place. Our favorite in San Juan. We come here every time we visit. While expensive, it's worth it given the amazing food, service, ambiance. Also has an amazing ocean view but you need to dine before sunset.. it's right in the heart of Condado and great to bar hop and walk around afterwards down Ashford Avenue.
Celebrating our first wedding with our wedding coordinator and her boyfriend. The food was sooooogood. We did the tasting menu and everything was just delicious. It had an amazing ambiance as well. When we visit PR again, we definitely will return to Pikayo!
My husband and two toddlers were on vacation in Puerto Rico. Since it was our last night and we were staying at the hotel where Pikayo was, we thought why not fine dine. It's usually though with a 2 yr & 4yr old but the restaurant totally accommodated us by giving us a booth. The waiter was awesome! He suggested string fries for the boys and made sure it came out right away to keep them happy. The food was a tad pricey but nothing too bad. The portions were a good size, I was too full to finish my fish. The fillet was huge! I highly recommend stopping by here to dine when you're in town!
An island on an island. We were looking for some fine dining, good food with local ingredients, professional service, and we found it, quite by accident. We were looking for reservations on Open Table and Pikayo had a time that worked for us... turns out it was in the hotel we were staying in. We were treated professionally at every turn. We all got the tasting menu, which was EXCELLENT! Portions were small but there were many of them and we were not at all hungry. I plan to be back here on next year's visit to San Juan.
Excellent food and service. We had the Puerto Rican tasting menu, which was outstanding and a great value at just $58 per person for 5 amazing courses. When we asked if there was a wine pairing available, there was not per se, but they created one just for us. If you go to Puerto Rico, you MUST dine here.
The service was excellent as well as the quality of the food and ingredients. Yes, the food was good;however, we were expecting the culinary experience to go beyond just "good". Something was amiss, as if the food was missing a part of its soul. Yes, the menu was pricey, but it wasn't all about the cost. The ambiance and decor seemed disjointed too. A few years back, we dined at Vertias and had enjoyed it very much. I guess our expectations were higher than the overall experience.
Tuna tartare, octopus en escabeche, and foie gras were outstanding. The souffle, while delicious and perfectly made, seemed out of place and more of a novelty than the end of a cohesive meal. The service was excellent. My main complaint is that the staff allowed a very drunk man to showboat for 2 ladies at his table - yelling so loudly about how great he is that I had a hard time hearing my wife. It was grating and annoying and perhaps the reason I didn't enjoy the souffle. Very frustrating.
