Do you like eclectic offerings? Does hollandaise sauce spiked with jalapeno's interest you? Do you like a great mix of classic rock and blues? If you said yes to these, you MUST try Max's WIne Dive. The food was phenomenal. I can't wait to try this place again, hopefully as soon as my wife gets back to town.
Even after making a reservation for 12:30, we waited over half an hour to be seated. It took a while to place an order, we had the donuts and they were burned. The manager was kind, took them off the tab and sent out another order, which were also burned. The server made a mistake when entering our order and only three of the four entrees made it to the table- a mistake that was compounded by her to checking on us. It wasn't until the other three were nearly finished that I got my entree. I understand that Brunch at Max's is very busy, and even more crowded due to Houston Restaurant Weeks, but the restaurant was completely off that day. I may give them another chance to make it right, but it won't be soon!
Appetizers didn't arrive together, main courses arrived 10 minutes apart. Every dessert on the restaurant weeks menu comes with ice cream and at 8:30 they were out of ice cream and didn't know how or where to get more. It will be a while before I venture back. It was always packed and was pretty empty. I now know why.
I did not realize it was Restaurant Week when I made reservations. This meant a limited menu, which I really don't like, and would have preferred to order off the regular menu. The chicken is OUT Of THiS WORLD good, as I expected from dining at other locations.
I've frequented Max's many times at many of their locations. This past Sunday 8/20/17 I went for a pre-baseball game brunch and was taken aback by the new seasonal brunch items. There were many new dishes and I landed on the Cornbread, Sausage and Gravy. It was phenomenal! Probably one of the best pieces of cornbread I've had since my grandmother's cast iron skillet cornbread many years ago. Two perfect pieces of cornbread sat next to each other. The sage bacon and sausage gravy was a little too conservatively applied on top of the sausage patty that sat atop the cornbread but only because it was so delicious I wanted so much more! Two beautiful (well ok one, because one broke before service) sunny side up eggs topped each stack of near perfection. Each bite was scrumptious and I easily cleaned my entire plate. This is a dish I will order MANY more times before this seasonal menu changes. My hope is that others feel the same way and Max's moves this dish to their permanent offerings. Sunday brunch was loud and crowded, but that is to be expected at any good restaurant in our great city. The kitchen did, however, take a very long time to get our two dishes out. Nearly 45 minutes, but the wait was WELL WORTH IT! Already looking forward to returning for brunch this next weekend!
You can't be in a hurry at this restaurant. We waited almost an hour for food. At least 10 minutes to even be greeted. This is during the weekend brunch rush though. I have come here before on a Friday afternoon and it was fine. Weekends are super busy for brunch and reservations are a must.
Cannot rate the food because we didn't get to try it. Had a reservation on Saturday night at 7. Promptly seated but no one came to our table for 15 minutes to take a drink order. Ordered 2 glasses of wine which took 10 minutes to arrive. Then our server disappeared and no one seemed to know where she was. We left at 7:30 to go elsewhere. Note: Management was apologetic and comped the wine.
My first visit to the Fairview location was a miss. The kitchen was clearly overwhelmed. Our waffles were cold and the famous fried chicken was not breaded and greasy. I only ate a little bit of the breast. The mac and cheese and greens were good. The staff was attentive but busy with gaps in service. I'll visit the heights location over this one.
First time I have ever been disappointed in the service here. Also, I like a lively crowd but the combination of loud music and a packed restaurant made it nearly impossible to talk. This was brunch but the noise level was like a disco. Great food but staff was not working up to the usual standards and too loud.
Had to ask for water refills. Had to ask for iced tea refills. Was not offered a second bottle of wine. Asked for fork as "roll up" didn't have one. Fork never received. Pancakes were, literally, black on one side. I could go on, but you get the point.
This was a hugely disappointing experience. I can usually rely on Max's for delicious food and impeccable service. It will be a while before I can give them another chance.
Max's Wine Dive is very well-known in Houston and has grown into a national chain. So they are doing something right - in this case, really amped-up versions of classic dishes. This works to a point. My fried egg sandwich had way too many ingredients competing for my taste buds. The old saying is, before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one accessory off. Max's would do well to remember this.
On the other hand, the fried chicken was minimal with hardly any seasoning at all.
Otherwise it's a fun atmosphere which can get very loud when crowded. Wine and cocktail selection is very good.
I have visited this location several times of the last year and the same issue happens. Poor service! I had to get up and ask to be waited on after 10 minutes. There were at least 3-4 employees standing by the front door, but they really were not watching how numerous guests sat and had to wait to even get their beverage order. It's a shame that the food is always great, but you are lucky if you can ever place an order. Management really needs to fix this or continue to lose customers as time goes on.
I usually like going there but the service wasn't great. I didn't get a spoon for my mac and cheese. I went to the bar to get one. They were out of the short rib sliders
, but the waitress didn't know that. I hate ordering something only to find out they don't have it even though it is on the menu. I also prefer to have someone who is attentive, like asking me if I need a soda or water refill without my having to flag them down. I like the Washington location better.
I've been to this location many times just not in the last year and a half. Service was inattentive at best. My fried chicken was excellent with great mashed potatoes. My wife's ribs? Man were they terrible. Like McRibs with an even sweeter sauce. I can get passed sub par food. However, after ordering a cocktail (campari and soda) they said they didn't have but then did have, it took 20 minutes to get a glass of wine with my meal...at the WINE dive. After the wine she never came back. I had to wave her down for dessert which was a microwaved brownie. Not exaggerating. Probably won't return for that kind of pricepoint.
I was disappointed, to say the least. We have enjoyed the three-egg sandwich in the past. Yummy bread with truffle oil grilled with gooey cheese, mounds of bacon and perfectly runny eggs. NOT this time.
The bread was barely toasted, the cheese and bacon were sparse and the eggs were overcooked. When I brought this to the attention of the waitress, she apologized, but did not offer a suggestion to make it better. I ordered an extra "runny" egg to add. My boyfriend does not like to complain, but it was easy to see that the sandwich was a letdown after our previous experience.
I ordered brownie for his "birthday cake." The manager came by to tell us that they were our of ice cream. He offered to comp us a serving of bananas foster. We declined because my boyfriend does not care for bananas. However, since he was at our table, I mentioned our disappointment with the sandwich. He apologized and said he would "make it right." When I got the bill I was not charged for the additional egg and there was a credit for $4 "birthday credit" on our $52 bill.
Won't be back to the Fairview location, even though it is walking distance from the house. Will instead drive to the Washington location. We have always had a great experience there.
