About Cosi Cucina Italian Grill
Cosi Cucina Italian Grill in Des Moines, Iowa was started in 1993. It quickly became a local favorite for wood oven pizzas, classic entrées, specialty pastas, fresh salads, homemade desserts and an impressive wine list. The entrance of Cosi Cucina Italian Grill is actually in the back, which ensures that you walk right by the open kitchen and gives the place a cozier feel like what you'd get from walking into a friend's house.
For an entrée at Cosi Cucina Italian Grill, there is the lobster pasta, potato ravioli and smoked chicken pasta. You should also consider the grouper, which is roasted in a wood oven and served with julienne vegetables.

We went there encouraged by the reviews. The owner was friendly and we were promptly seated. The waiter was efficient but never smiled nor seemed to care. I had the special a rigatoni pasta with chicken. The chicken was dry, the pasta a little overcooked, the vegetables mushy and the the dish was bland. The bread was 2 flat soft rolls, cold and tasteless. The olive oil to dip it in was low quality and unspiced. The waiter offered grated parmesan and then stopped and disappeared after the most meager of servings. The salad was ala carte and not much to be said for it either. All in all a bland poorly cooked meal with surly service. Considering the quality, it was way overpriced. We shall not return.
Took my wife, mother and grandmother to dinner on a Saturday night (dinner the night before Mother's Day so as to not mess with the brunch rush the next morning). Restaurant was extremely busy but the service was timely and responsive. The caprese salad was excellent. We all ordered pasta dishes and the others enjoyed their Mushroom Pasta's (one with and one without shrimp) and Sausage Rigatoni. I got the Lobster Pasta that had several large pieces of lobster however the meat was salty (not sweet) and somewhat dried out. I was disappointed but the others enjoyed their meals so overall, better than average.
We love to eat at local places and this place is a favorite. The food is amazing, the prices are reasonable and the service is second to none. Cosi Cucina is just a great place for a dinner out. The scallops appetizer ( wood grilled) is excellent-ziti is one of their signature dishes.
Our evening was just lovely. Met, greeted & seated promptly. Our waitress was excellent, made recommendations when asked and gave seamless & timely service. The meal was excellent. All 4 dishes were prepared as ordered and exceeded expectations. 3/4 took home large portions as leftovers as well. It's wonderful to see a classic come back better than ever!
We have been going regularly to Cosi Cucina for 16 years and every time the evening is phenomenal. It is one of our all time favorite restaurants (and We are foodies!) Our favorites are the Wood grilled scallops appetizer and mozarella salad with champagne dressing. And of course, the Ziti. For dessert you must get the tiramasu or cheesecake ---both wonderful.
We travel a lot and enjoy the local restaurants. Cosi Cucina is a stand out and equalsand surpasses any place we have ever eaten. We just love this place.
The reviews I read were mixed, so I went in with an open mind. The first small hurdle we came to was that the enterance was in the back of the building. Not a major thing, but with no vehicles in the front parking lot we thought they may be closed. Upon entering the restaurant you're met with the smell of a "wood-smoked" kitchen. Not a bad thing. The lighting was dim, giving that romantic feeling we were looking for. The staff was friendly. The carpet needed replaced. They weren't busy at the time. The overall feel was nice. One meal was good. The other was undercooked (and being it was pasta, not good). We would consider returning in the future, but wouldn't make it a staple in our outings.
We have been to Cosi Cucina a few times and the food has been outstanding. During this trip we were very disappointed. Ordered Caesar salads, they came wilted and flavorless. The waitress was wonderful, she took them back and off the bill. Ordered the lobster bisque - again, lacked flavor. Ordered the calamari, which we haves ordered in the past, it came over cooked. It was not the dining experience that we have come to love from Cosi Cucina. Not sure why the food was not good that evening???? Not sure if we will be back....
Quality of food was superb all around. I love that every time I visit the restaurant there are so many top-line options on the menu. I had the Potato Ravioli and was instantly in love with the richness of flavors. It was the food equivalent of a fine cigar paired with just the right aged glass of scotch.
Pros: Excellent & unique food, prompt and courteous wait staff
Cons: Initial seating was undesirable (the place was nearly empty but we were squished between two other larger dining parties...and that's with a reservation); hostess and manager were under-dressed and heard grumbling when I asked to be re-seated
We have lived in the area for one year but never noticed this restaurant from the busy street. Signage makes it hard to even notice it driving by. We entered through what was a back door and waited a bit to be seated. I've got to comment that the initial view into the seating area makes it not seem as classy as I was expecting. The salads and soup were brought out for our party of four promptly. Main courses came next and our Smoked chicken pastas were good but very light on the chicken. Although the plates came out hot, the dish cooled off very quickly. Desserts were great but could actually be sized down(the cheesecake)....I found them to be twice as much as I needed.
My visit to Cosi Cucina was for a business lunch. It was ideal. Quiet, so we could talk. The wait staff person was very attentive without being intrusive. The food was very good. I would go back for another business lunch there anytime. I will also visit it for dinner.
Cosi Cucina is usually a solid place to get a good meal. The server we were placed with did not provide good service. He was there physically but mentally checked out. 3 out of 4 of our dishes were good. One of my dining companions got a dish they had before it wasn't as good. Overall good meal, bad server.
Our party of 6 was seated immediately by friendly staff. The menu selection is broad (basics like pizza all the way up to truly unique signature meals). The waiter (Skip, if I recall correctly) was friendly, had a great sense of humor, and knew the menu inside and out. Our food arrived promptly, and each dish was delicious. Portions are generous, which is a shame because it is hard to save room for dessert. Don't miss desserts, though. The cheesecake is outstanding, as is the brownie. The restaurant offers vegetarian and gluten-free options. (Sadly, all of the desserts contain eggs, so vegans may have to skip this course.) Prices are very reasonable. Highly recommended.
I've been to Cosi before and the food has been wonderful. On this trip, the fish I ordered (Grouper) was too salty for me to eat and the risotto that was with the dish had too much cream in it and I couldn't eat it. My husband ordered the pork marsala but they were out of pork so then he ordered the filet Medium Rare and it came out Rare. All in, just not a good experience
