Battello Ratings and Reviews
Great place and location. Only 2 issues. One being the parking. They have limited reserved spaces for patrons. You will need to either find street parking or pay for park in a lot. They also need better ventilation in the outside seating. They do have fans but they don't cool you off if you happen to be there in a warm day. Guests were literally sitting there fanning themselves with items they found. Aside from that, great place for drinks/dinner
Great view of the city. However, the food leaves much to be desired. The fishy crab cakes and chewy grilled octopus were extremely underwhelming. Not to mention that at 7:30 p.m. on a Wednesday, the restaurant was "out of" 3 items on the menu (2 main courses).
I had many clients in town and wanted to rake a group of 20 out for dinner. Unfortunately you are forced to go through their event center for groups larger than 11. In doing so, you are offered a limited menu. Sorry, that does not work for me. I was able to get them to raise the limit to 12, so that was what we did.
Food and service were very good, but not sure I can use them again, due to their limitations mentioned earlier. Sad part is they could have sold more dinners had I been able to bring the amount of people originally requested.
The view and ambience of the restaurant is lovely, however; the service is severely lacking to the point that it takes away from the overall experience. I'd be happy to pay for an overpriced plate of mediocre pasta if the service was good, but it only adds insult to injury when the staff is inattentive, slow and a bit rude.
Would I go back? No. Should they step their game up? Yes, they're not the only restaurant in the area with that view. Did I feel rushed and like I squandered our money? Yes.
The experience started off great--I changed the reservation multiple times online and even wrote a note about having one fewer person with us, and all was accommodated for. Food options were good and prices were good. Scenery was beautiful, right on the waterfront and the ambiance was very rustic and cool. Overall not 5 stars because the server hovered around the table sort of just staring at us--he wasn't checking/refilling waters or drinks, because my water stayed empty for awhile even though he was watching us. Then my friend reported other employees staring at her as she tried to find the bathroom. We felt like they thought we were going to dine and dash or something, which made the overall experience less than ideal because we were uncomfortable most of the time. Then when we left to get our car from the valet, it became clear to us that we could have had our valet validated by the restaurant and gotten our $10 back because the couple in front of us did that. No one at the restaurant mentioned this, even though the only real way to park was by valet. I didn't feel like going back inside to request validation, especially because of how uneasy we felt when we were inside. But knowing for next time is good, and if you are a prospective guest reading this, now you know. I could be wrong about this of course (maybe the couple in front of us came from somewhere else? I didn't see any other place they could have been, but I am unfamiliar with the area), but at least you know to ask!
I would highly recommend this place because of the ambiance and food--I would go back. I just hope we don't get stared at so weirdly next time!!
Is it still possible to get great service (Thanks Sammy), great view, great food, solid wine list that doesn't break the bank, wonderful ambience in the New York area at a reasonable price? Battello's hits a home run in all areas. On top of the meal, you can see some interesting boats docked at the pier!
Fantastic experience for wedding anniversary #23! Treated like royalty with special treats and attention from wonderful server Tammy who made sure it was an evening to remember. Food was excellent - full of flavor - did not rely on view like some destination locations. Bravo!
We decided to have Sunday Brunch at Battello and we are glad we did. The inside is very nice with high ceilings, lots of windows and just an overall cool vibe. We were seated in the enclosed terrace and the view of Manhattan is wonderful. The waiter was friendly and attentive. As an appetizer we ordered the shrimp cocktail which the shrimp were extra large and tender (not fishy). We also ordered a hamburger (delicious - juicy) with salad and also chicken panini (crunchy). Both lunch entrees were really good. Overall we enjoyed our brunch at Battello and are now looking forward to go for dinner to see the Manhattan skyline at night time as well as the evening ambience inside the restaurant and of course to try some dinner entrees.
We spoke to 2 or 3 local Jersey City residents who heartily endorsed Battello, so we selected the restaurant for our 1st anniversary dinner. I made the reservation and requested a window view (of the Manhattan skyline), stating it was for our anniversary dinner. I received a call from the restaurant a day or two before, confirming the reservation and our special requests. Upon our arrival, we were seated at a table away from the window and were told that it would be a 45-minute wait before such a table would be available. This was disappointing. We complained that were were promised a window table, so the hostess notified us that a table was settling its check, and she seated us at a window table in a few minutes. The service was average to below average. There were extended periods (toward the end of the meal) when the waitress was nowhere to be found. Standard services such as filling our water glasses needed to be prompted. The food was very good. We ordered the octopus and crab cake appetizers, followed by the shrimp rizzuto and black sea bass. Toward the end of our meal, the waitress checked on the adjacent table and neglected to check on us at the same time. We were clearly finished with our entrees but were required to wait at least 10 more minutes for our plates to be cleared. By this time, the restaurant was well past the dinner rush. After the plates were finally cleared, we waited another lengthy period for the check. The waitress appeared with a small dessert, compliments of Battello, for our anniversary, which was a nice touch. All in all, the food was very good, but the service was below average.
