Barra Rossa – Philadelphia Ratings and Reviews
I was disappointed in Barra Rossa. The reviews were really good, but the food was just average and the drinks were just average. We liked our cheese plate and the crostini were really good, but everything else was just okay. Between us, we had the gnocchi and a chicken parmesan, plus a chocolate dessert and two salads. All just fine. The prices are reasonable. The service was fine. The highlight was the atmosphere; the building itself was lovely. But everything else was meh. I will not be going back.
We went there during the restaurant week. The website states that they offer three-course lunch on Saturday but not on Sunday. We made a reservation for Saturday but when we got there, they told us that the chief had decided not to offer the special lunch on Saturday without any reason and no apology. Because of it, we had to find another one while most had been reserved. We had to walk for 20 minutes holding a 2-year-old child to another one. If they did not offer, they should have let us know earlier.
Barra Rossa is the restaurant we always go to before the show at the Walnut Street Theater. The proximity to the theater is great and the meals have always been very, very good and satisfying or our tastes. I especially like the roasted beet salad and my husband always, but always, orders the chicken parmesan. The service is always good. I would suggest making reservations to go to Barra Rossa, especially on show night or you might not get a seat.
Our group were gathering for a show at the WST. The real plus was it was Restaurant Week. The menu was varied, fresh ingredients, and well prepared. Our server was a smart and friendly young woman.
Everything was great except where the hostess seated is. It was right next to set up station w/ a walls on two sides of the table. Interestingly the bar area only had one occupied table. When a couple came upstairs
They were seated in a nice open area. The server saved the day!
Last minute choice to accommodate vegetarian friends. Pizza was decent, Scallops were ok, but eggplant parm was not good, and the lobster tortellini had no lobster flavor. But the worst was the cocktails. My "Jefferson Lemonade" tasted like mouthwash, and my face contorted when my brother asked me to finish his "Before the the show". I can't imagine going back here.
Food was delicious!! and quick: we were technically done eating in about 30 minutes. The waiter was OK - not quite 100% - i tried to order a "build my own pizza" all i wanted was tomato sauce and fresh mozzarella. he argued with me and told me to order a Margherita pizza - i explained i didn't want the chunky tomato, or the basil or whatever else came with it. I just wanted the sauce & fresh mozzarella. he brought a pizza out, and as I was eating, I noticed big chunks of "clear something". i asked him what it was, he finally told me it was sliced garlic - that's on the margherita pizza. Just irritated me since I was very specific about not wanting Margherita and just wanting a plain, 2 ingredient pizza. and they weren't very good about taking our dirty plates away. we sat there all thru dessert with 4 dirty plates.
I stumbled across Barra Rossa on Yelp and judging by the reviews, it seemed like an authentic Italian place to take my friend who was visiting. I entered the Maggiano's-esque dining room which was 3/4 empty during the dinner rush on a Friday night. We split the a Caesar salad, the chicken Parmesan, and the meatballs. It was good, but nothing special. The waitress was friendly and we received great service, but I shall not be returning. The food was nothing better than a Maggiano's chain. In a city such as Philly which has no shortage of fantastic Italian restaurants, this one doesn't make the cut.
Our first-time visiting to Barra Rossa. Overall, enjoyable. Our waiter was very nice, professional and friendly. Food was good - fairly large portions and decent quality. Cocktails and wine were fine. The atmosphere was a bit "energetic" and the high, open ceilings did not help. Lighting was a bit dim, which made reading menus, etc. difficult. If we find ourselves back in Philidelphia again, we surely will drop in.
This was our first time and I chose it because it was close to Jefferson Hospital. The waiter was very chatty and nice but his service left alot to be desired. We had to ask him for everything, salt, pepper, napkins, utensils, and he was very slow. He did offer us free dessert and coffee and a drink to make us for the slowness. We're Italian and love good bread but the bread wasn't very good even with the olive oil dip. However the saving grace was the food. The meal was excellent and the prices are well within reason. I would definitely return just for the food. Maybe the waiter had an off night. So I'll give it another try.
The food was amazing. We had the calamari and the fried zucchini for starters. The calamari stole the show! They also fried banana peppers with the calamari. Added a wonderful depth to the flavors! I ordered the Shrimp Salad and the spicy shrimp pasta. Everything was excellent. Our waiter was extremely attentive and accommodating. I wish we had known about the champagne bar upstairs, but now we have a reason to come back.
We celebrated a family birthday prior to going to the Academy of Music for a show. The menu was very expansive and everything we ordered was delicious! Great appetizers and great main courses. The cost was minimal for such a meal for 5 people. We would definitely return! We had a great waiter and also a "waiter in training' so we were well taken care of that evening.
I wish I could rate this establishment with a 5 stars because the food and service was outstanding. the reason i am not rating this restaurant with A 5 star is because the night we dined one of the airconditioners was broken. The restaurant did have fans however the air especially where we were seated upstairs was hot. Until this restaurant gets their airconditioning fixed i would not recommend going to it especially when the temp and humidity outside is unbearable
We were not impressed with the staff or the food. Our waiter kept forgetting us and forgot what we ordered. They over cooked the veal and our wine glasses still had lipstick impressions from the previous gusts. We ordered espresso after our meal, he forgot them, both cups were not clean and he apologized and would be right back with a new one, he never returned!!
The food was good and as expected for an Italian restaurant. But there was no air conditioning
and it was VERY hot. I was sweating for my entire meal. I also felt as though our server was "somewhere else" the entire time. He didn't write our order down, but then came back because he forgot what we ordered. The check took forever to ring up. It was just very haphazard.
Although we had a reservation and there were a lot of empty tables, the host sat us right next to a large party of men. It was very noisy; could not even talk to each other. In addition the air conditioning was not working very well and it was hot . On the plus side the beet and cheese salad was very good and the gnocchi dinner was delicious.
My wife and I enjoyed a relaxing dinner after seeing a play at the Forrest Theater on a Saturday afternoon. The restaurant had a pleasant atmosphere and great aromas upon entering. We sat on the second level, which provided us with a quiet place to dine. Our caprice salad was perfect for two and delicious. We opted for the margarita pizza, which is a specialty. It was excellent.
When we are back in downtown Philly, we will stop there again.
Air conditioning was non-existent in 100 degree heat. Very uncomfortable. Waiter was new and didn't adequately describe the deserts so we ordered the key lime pie, which turned out to be a disagreeably tasting parfait. Great location pre-theatre but definitely needs air conditioning.
We had a delicious pre theater dinner on 7/12/17. Service and food were excellent, however I would not recommend eating upstairs in the hot and sticky summer months, because the air conditioner was not working. ( My group if five should have requested, more strongly, seating downstairs.) I would recommend fixing the AC upstairs and/or adding some ceiling paddle fans.
Even with that complaint, I will definitely return!
