BALEEN - Naples Ratings and Reviews
Baleen has been one of our favorite restaurants in the past - a beautiful place to eat while watching the sunset over the beach. But they did a "renovation" this summer and the room is now cold - it looks like the breakfast room at a Marriott hotel. The food was truly mediocre as well. So despite the charming staff, three stars is generous. We will try it one more time when we can sit outside by the beach, but if it hasn't improved it will be off the list.
We asked for a special table when we booked our reservation and we got there they had no idea of our request and they put us in the middle of a Christmas’ party when we explained in our booking that the occasion was our wedding anniversary! We asked to be moved (obviously) and at that point I saw they didn’t care to read our request for our reservation. The food is okay not spectacular and our waiter was fine. After the renovation, the restaurant lost the coziness they had. Now, it’s very bright not romantic and you feel you’re in the middle of a living room with a bunch of people sticking together. The many restaurants I’ve been to they supposedly at that level, they always validade your parking ticket, well not at this one. According to its new management they don’t do it anymore. Well, it’s not for the value of the parking ticket but for me they don’t value their customers. Definitely, they won’t see us their anymore.
Sadly we were not apprised or warned of construction abound and fire alarms! Ambience of the gulf always is lovely but the alarm noise was unacceptable. Perhaps hostess or dining mgr. should have offered the table a round of drinks or even a dessert to share would have helped!
I frequent the Baleen often but would have skipped this day had I known they were under construction! More than happy to return when all is calm like the gulf!
I took a friend to lunch at Baleens for a birthday celebration. We were seated outside on the porch with a view of the gulf. We both ordered salads: the quinoa with salmon and the caesar with shrimp. Both salads were delicious. The meal was topped off with a lovely rich chocolate dessert that we shared. The food is excellent and the service is superb, and of course the view is outstanding. They are currently undergoing repairs and renovations as a result of Hurricane Irma. They expect to complete the work soon so don't hesitate to make dining plans there. We always enjoy our visits to Baleen.
This restaurant will always do well because of the beautiful location and the food is usually good to very good. I would highly recommend eating outside if the weather allows. We were not fans of the newly decorated dining area and lobby. This place used to be unique, special, with an old Caribbean charm to it. I'm assuming the renovations were necessary because of the hurricane but the interior lacks warmth - almost felt like we were eating in a cafeteria.
Everyone seemed happy with their meals, Prime Rib, New York Strip steak and Swordfish. However, for the past few visits, the service has been somewhat lacking. We're not trying to become best friends, but a little enthusiasm goes a long way.
Would we go back? Yes, we would go back and eat on the beach. The dining room is probably more appealing in the daylight since you can see the water. But there is definitely room for improvement.
We have always loved Baleen. Outside is the only option bc it's romantic and beautiful. Pricing doubles other popular places like the new Bevy in d/t naples. It's pricey for what it is . Our tab was $150 before tip for one glass of wine, a diet coke, fries, one appetizer, grouper entrée, and small filet entree. $180 is steep for that type of dinner. The renovation on the interior looks like a daytime coastal breakfast spot. The lights inside were very bright for the evening. We saw only two tables being utilized inside (we think because of that). It looks like they replaced everything in the renovation other than the commodes in the ladies room. They looked old.
This used to be one of the best restaurants in Naples. It was recently renovated and the new look is not good. Menu has been changed and selections are fewer. Food quality is suffering. Hoping management will correct course soon!
This place was a total miss all around. For starters, they are undergoing construction so we were looking directly at scaffolding during dinner. Things did not improve with the food; incredibly overpriced for the quality. The filet came served in a pool of very sweet mushroom sauce, topped with spicy grass leaves. The quality was what you could expect from a middle tier wedding. The Caesar salad comes served as one giant wedge of lettuce, which takes about 5 minutes to chop (why go out to dinner if you have to do the hard part?). The asparagus was yellowish white and clearly not fresh, and also covered in a sour hollindaise sauce. The mashed potatoes were fine but that was about it. The grouper was fair, nothing exciting but not horrible. Our server, Adriano was the only exception to this horrible dining experience. He was fabulous! We were staying at the hotel so we decided to take some friends out to dinner here and it was really embarrassing. We ended up checking out of the hotel a day early and went to the Ritz because the entire hotel is under construction and really an eye sore. I would not go back here again, especially when there are quality steakhouses and seafood restaurants 2 miles away.
Disappointing experience this time around. Staff seemed uncaring and not their usual.
Never felt like a valued customer. Past experiences have all been at dinner time and this was lunch. Not sure I would ever go for lunch for the $$ they charge and the lackluster service.
Our first time here did not leave us wanting to come back. While the waiter was charming and the food was good, the prices certainly were high given the lack of ambiance. A table on the beach was requested or close to it but not supplied. It appears this restaurant is also where breafast and lunch for the resort is served. Not really all that it was promoted to be.
$350 for a party of three, no after dinner drinks or dessert.
We were seated on the terrace facing the Gulf. The overhead lighting is glaring and needs improvement even though they have gone through a big renovation.
I must say, the service was slow with an entree mistake that took twenty minutes to correct.
The de rigeur valet service was a mad house and $5 fee plus tip.
It didn’t have an elegant feel at all and the mob around the valet felt like a trip to Disney World.
I am taking BALEEN off my dining list even considering the great view....
We have always saved Baleen for special occasions. The ambience, furnishing, linens, superior wait staff and attention to detail was what made it superior. We had guests in town and invited them to what we believed was one of the best restaurants in town. Upon hearing of the new renovation, we were convinced this was the place to go. Unfortunately, there was nothing to be impressed with as the renovation was not complete and we were seated in front of a scaffolding. It took 20 minutes to have wait staff approach us and another 20 minutes to get bread and water. The food was acceptable but nothing special and the price was high for the venue. Walking into what was once a beautiful and romantic restaurant was now a place without linens - only placemats and reminded me of a hotel chain restaurant interior that serves free breakfast. Gone is all the beauty, replaced with a very ordinary looking décor which screams "no frills" Certainly not an improvement after multi-million dollar renovation. We will not be back.
The "new" Baleen has some kinks to get out. We loved it before so will give it another chance but the 2nd day of the re-opening was rocky. My husband's chair got hit with a door several times and his dinner was not edible. Mine was very good and my son's was fine. There are so many great restaurants in Naples...they will have to do better to keep us coming back.
Our server name was Chris! Amazing from the host stand greeting to the end of our evening! Celebrating my wife's 30th birthday. This is the place for your special occasion! Wonderful red rose for the lady plus unique ambient on the front outside porch. Food was amazing. Both had steaks filet and NY sirloin. Wine selection is amazing if you are wine snob like myself. Inside Bar with plenty of great cocktails. Vess the bartender will take great care of you! In the end i would recommend this place any time!!
Thank you making our special evening feel like one!!
We ate in the 2nd floor Club dining room for dinner (Baleen downstairs is being renovated until Oct 1st).
I was meeting with a dear friend I hadn't seen in almost 7 years to catch up. It was the perfect place! Wonderful ambience, gorgeous view with sunset, attentive service by Adriano (from Roma), and the exceptional food....delicious and beautifully presented. Cocktails and wine were perfect. What can I say....it's my favorite restaurant for any occassion which is special to you.
Unfortunately we picked a time to go when the place was under construction so we were moved to the 2nd floor instead of enjoying outdoor dining. The food was very good and the service was excellent so we will be back when construction is over to get the experience we originally intended.
