Portofino Ratings and Reviews
My husband and I had veal marsala meatballs. This used to be my favorite meal at Portofina's. The entrée was what I will describe as "tired." It tasted like it had been previously cooked, and was warmed up for us. It was not up to my expectations.
We had not been to Portofino's for a couple of years. A friend of a friend just moved to Lexington, and wanted to have lunch. I recommended Portofino's. She had soup and quiche. She did not finish the soup, and she was not impressed with the quiche.
We typically have liked Portofino's but this was one of the worst experiences we have had. Service was very slow and poor. The waitress did not know what Spaghetti was and even after the second try did not bring spaghetti out to our kids. Imagine an Italian restaurant that has no clue what spaghetti is. The kids are young and they waited very patiently. It took us over 30 minutes to get our appetizer and over an hour after that to get our meals - again which were wrong for the kids.
Next time we are going to Guiseppe's
We had the scallops and filet with tiramisu for dessert. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was perfect for us to sit and chat. Our server was attentive, but not intrusive. In all i would rate our experience as a 10 out of 10 . Thank you to Portofino. I would highly recommend Portofino if you are in Lexington.
I am the guy that OpenTable hates. I rarely write reviews particularly for highly rated establishments because I typically can't add anything new and the last thing I need to read is another ditto to already posted reviews. However, when I encounter an experience like ours at Portofino on Saturday night I feel I should add something to try and prevent others from the same outcome. We were seated directly upon our arrival and after a few minutes our server arrived to take our drink order. I selected a bottle of wine and then....we waited. I could see the bottle sitting at the bar and in her defense she was busy serving food and taking orders at other tables. I finally went to the bar to get the bottle (15 minutes since we ordered it) and what appeared to be the manager was a little snippy the bartender graciously agreed to open and let us taste. When the server arrived several minutes later we apologized for being impatient and simply said we wanted to toast our anniversary. She smiled and then walked us through their featured entries for the evening. We both ordered based on her input and recommendations. The soup was supposed to be Tuscan bean...it lacked flavor and was more of a vegetable soup with a few beans but nothing that suggested anything as described. Our entries were also a disappointment. It seems as though they were going for complexity rather than actual flavors. Strange combinations of ingredients in both dishes. Neither of us finished our entries and were significantly disappointed. I'll end this with my feeling is sometime the food is so overwhelming that it covers for difficulties in the service. Sometimes one of us simply orders the wrong dish and but the other is pleased with their choice so it was a selection issue. This was none of the above. I write this because Portofino was rated highly and we were visiting Lexington to enjoy a nice dinner. Based on our experience...be careful here.
Service was exceptionally slow
I think the staff were short handed
For the prices charged that should not happen.
We then had to wait another long period of time to get our credit card picked up to check out.
This was a bad experience for my guest visiting from Atlanta.
She is used to top dining experiences
A very inviting restaurant with nice outdoor dining that is done nicely with lighting and flowers/plants. The service was good and meals were well prepared. Everything tasted freshly made and served at the right temperatures. It is definitely a return restaurant and I would recommend to others.
We traveled in from Chattanooga TN to watch the horse races at Keeneland and this was the perfect meal to end a great day. The egg rolls were phenomenal and I highly recommend the Chicken Marsala. Food was superb and ambiance was great. We sat on the patio under the bistro lights.
Portifino's is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. The food is always good and they have a wide selection of entrees to suit different tastes. Generally we have great service, but this time I was quite disappointed in our server. She was lax in getting to us, we waited quite a while for her to take our order and then to bring our food. She failed to bring a glass of water that was requested and never even acknowledged it later. By the time she finally offered coffee or dessert we were tired of waiting and said no thank you even though we would have ordered both if she would have been more timely. I will go back here for dinner, but I hope I have better service that I have come to expect there from past experience.
Had a lovely lunch with co-workers the other day. Seafood Chowder was to die for and the rest of our food was very good as well. Great service and it was easy to converse since it wasn't crazy-loud like some places are. Surprisingly reasonable prices at lunch time.
8:45 PM reservation on Friday evening.
Service: This was the big disappointment. Apps took 15 minutes and then dinner took another 1 hour and 45 minutes. While we waited for dinner, the waiter was more or less MIA. Seemed they were lightly staffed but when you charge these prices, that's the restaurant's problem, not ours. Our waiter was nice when he was there, but he never really came back to check on us or offer more drinks (they missed a sales opportunity there!). To his credit, he did give us an extra calamari and rock shrimp appetizer for waiting but became MIA after that and for the better part of the 1 hour and 45 minutes we waited for dinner. We had other plans that night after dinner that weren't to be because of the excessive wait. We were given a decent discount on our bill and were offered free dessert so, kudos to management there. But service was so bad, we will not likely be back.
Food: Rock shrimp and calamari app was good. Muscle app, not so good; muscles were very dry and in need of being coated in the sauce. What little sauce was there was forgettable as it was watered down without much flavor; no bread dipping there. Entrees were good on average. Marinara and cream sauce on the seafood was excellent. Short ribs were forgettable and not very good. Prepared more like a stew with the gravy on it. Better with a wine reduction sauce around the edge allowing one to apply the sauce themselves. Brazed kale did not seem to be cooked to order. No dessert even though it was offered free of charge due to the excessive wait for dinner; we just didn't want to wait any longer for anything.
We thoroughly enjoyed our evening. The menu had several excellent options to choose from, and we liked everything we ate. The pastas were especially good. Prices were very reasonable, with small and large salad offerings. Extensive wine list and we were able to enjoy a very nice bottle of Chardonnay for $50. One of the best dining experiences we have, and we eat out and travel frequently.
