Playa Cabana Cantina Ratings and Reviews
The guacamole was amazing! our server was soo nice because I was concerned about having the chips as they were a tad greasy and she brought me soft tortillas instead. She was very very helpful in suggesting other dishes and me and my friend enjoyed our meal very much! Definitely coming back again!
This was my second visit to the Cabana restaurants.
This is a great casual place for a date, or going out with some friends.
The food is simple but packed with flavours.
The mixed drinks and sauces are all house made with some interesting twists.
I highly recommend this place to anyone.
I hope the expand the vegetarian selection.
The scallop taco was not great which was a low point.
The rest of our items and I have had were all spectacular.
The hot sauces are great.
Wine and beer selection is excellent.
This restaurant is a gem in the heart of the Junction. I have gone there about 10 times now and not one time has there ever been a problem with food or service!
The servers have always been very friendly and knowledgeable about their menu and often the neighborhood too! The food...the only way to describe it....mouthwatering, can't get enough, lick your plate clean goodness!
Will come back time and time again!
I went here on a recommendation with my family and we all tried different things including the tacos, enchiladas and burritos and they were all delciious. The prices were reasonable for the portion sizes. The drinks were wonderful although a bit over priced. The wait staff was knowledgable and friendly but not overbearing. Definitely going back!
The guacamole, salsa and chips were good. Everything else was okay.. Special dietary request (vegan) was not accommodated (twice returned for including cheese and bits of beef). Poor timing in the service of our meals as some diners were finished before other meals arrived. As I did not want to post a negative review without giving the restaurant a chance, I did contact the restaurant the day after our meal, spoke with a few people, but after a week I am still waiting to hear from the manager.
This place falls into the category way too many Toronto restaurants suffer from: adding too much "stuff" to their food thinking it's adding to the taste. Well too many onions does not equal better flavour—it's just too many onions! (and it leaves your hands smelling like onions for at least 24 hours). I challenge these restaurants to cook more simply and stop disguising their food with unnecessary additions. They will be surprised!
This is all a shame because otherwise the ambiance and service were really great!
We ordered guacamole, salsa, ceviche, octopus taco, LA truck taco and grilled fish taco. Everything was fresh and delicious. The guacamole and grilled fish taco stood out as the excellent and the worst, and everything else fell in the middle as good. Guacamole was the best because it was fresh, the ratio of the cilantro, onion, garlic, tomato and avocado was good, resulting in a thick and creamy dip. I noted that the salt was at the bottom of the stone container. The grilled fish taco was the worst not because it was not well made but because it used Basa fish filet, as opposed to Haddock fish filet which was listed in the online menu. Basa was not a meaty white fish. Using it as an ingredient in a grilled fish taco gave the protein of the taco no texture. I could taste the fish, but the loaded garnish overwhelmed the texture of the Basa fillet completely. When I searched for fish, I realized the fillet fell apart when I bit the taco.
Hence, if you want to order grilled fish taco, I advise checking with the waitress the choice of fish fillet beforehand. If it is not a meaty white fish, opt for the fried fish taco instead, or none.
My group and I were thrilled with our meal and service. We had a 7pm rezo originally but due to bad weather and bad traffic we had to make a call and the hostess was happy to delay our reservation until 9pm -- this was on a Friday night.
Service was great - the food was really really good. L.A. Food Truck taco was everyone's favourite. The only slight difference I noticed was that the tacos were much spicier than my previous visits. Maybe due to a different chef on the shift with a heavy hand when it comes to spices...?
I tried the Pescado taco and the scallop taco and both were out of this world. The flavouring of the Pescado taco was fabulous - I'm still thinking about it!
I've been to Cantina several times and it is always amazing ! The short rip tacos is to die for and will melt in your mouth!!
The only negative thing about the restaurant is the music is really loud which makes it hard to talk to the people you're with!!
Try it and you'll be hooked!
Seems more booze forward than food-centric. Server was sure to talk all about the cocktail menu, but didn't say anything about the food, at all. Didn't even mention food, except to ask what we would like to order. The food was good though, didn't blow my mind, but good.
I have brought my friends and family here a few times and they really like the way the restaurant looks. The next thing they like is the food. For an appetizer, chorizo nachos are always made perfect. I love the fish tacos, both fried and baked are equally delicious.
The alcohol menu is very different and creative. It's a fun menu to get people to try and enjoy tequila if they aren't a fan of it.
The music is really loud but this can be good or bad. It isn't a 'romantic' scene but it is a place where I feel like I'm getting that nightclub type of high and wild enjoyment.
Cantina is such a great addition to the neighbourhood. Great ambience, good food. I like the look of the new cocktail features but didn't try one. I gave the margaritas another chance but disappointed again. There original margs when opened were great. They current ones are not good which is so disappointing. I have had both 2x now. It was definitely part of why I liked going there, adds to the experience. The idea of 2 options is right but the sweet one is too sweet. Dave's Marg is too sour with not enough flavour. Both are out if balance and need more lime/flavour.
If you love Mexican food, I'd highly suggest Cantina. The food tasted Authentic - like it was straight out of Mexico. My only complaint would be that they bring your food out very very quickly, right after you order. So unless you take your time ordering and eating your meal, you're in and out of the restaurant.
Other than that, GREAT restaurant that everyone should try.
Been here a few times. Food is always great but they do need to work on their consistency. Feature drinks are always awesome! Very different and interesting flavours. Intimate space but it's not too cramped. Food comes out as it's ready so don't expect to all the eating at the exact same time. Servers are knowledgeable and friendly.
I dined there on a Tuesday night and I was very disappointed in the tacos. I love tacos and have eaten at every taco restaurant
in Toronto. The tacos were way TOO over filled and impossible to hold. Our pork taco was so filled and wet, that it completely fell
apart in our hands! We had to eat it with a fork and the brown paper below it melted into the taco. The tacos were also too oily.
I did not enjoy my taco experience at Playa Cantina. I dined there when you first opened and the tacos were very good.
However, our waiter was excellent and made up for the poor food. I will stick to the taco restaurants I normally go to in Kensington Market.
I do consider myself to be quite a foodie.
Second time going to Playa Cabana! DELICIOUS food, amazing ambiance - definitively the perfect place to celebrate something or just to go for food with your lover!!! The services has always been great. Last time we went on a Saturday and waited for a long time for our table - but going on a Monday night made a huge difference! We felt like we had all the time in the world. Beer lover? Well it's right across Indie Ale House so you can go for a pre or after beer as well!!!! :)
Food is Delicious (A bit pricey) but SOOoooo worth it! Try the Mojito & the RhumPunch!!!!! If I could, I would go there every month AT LEAST! Try it, you won't regret it !!!! :)
I know the food here is great... that's why we go to the Playa Restaurants as often as we do... unfortunately, I don't really like that we had to wait for 45min. even though we made reservations. Besides the apologies made there was nothing really done to make it worth the wait. We then had to order in a hurry because the kitchen was closing. Again the food was great but a 9:30 meal turned into a 10:15 seating ...
We have been to Playa Cantina several times and thought it would be a great place to entertain my cousins one of whom is eighty years old. l could not believe it when we were directed to those stupid stools. My cousin who is game for anything willingly climbed aboard but sitting next to her I noticed how uncomfortable she was as was I.We both have arthritis. There are also hooks in the wall placed in such a way that I backed in to one when I tried to descend from the clouds. The rest of the family who is much younger was not impressed.Love the food and the service but why the stools? Also the staircase to the washrooms is rather dark. These are potential accidents waiting to happen since alcohol is consumed there.
The restaurant itself just looks cool and any bar that has a wall of tequila, well I think just speaks for itself...lots of very smooth tequilas, amazing margaritas great mojitos and tons of speciality cocktails depending on the night make it a great spot for drinks to start your evening. But the best thing about this place is definitely the tacos a great variety and some of the best authentic tacos I've had in the city. The best are AL pastor if you like a lil bit of spice or pulpo which is octopus and chorizo(best ever!) Tons of flavor in any taco you choose the only thing i would be careful of is the short rib they are a lil too greasy. Needless to say this is def a gem in Toronto and my favorite of all the playa cabana locations.
Went to Cantina with two friends who had never been before. They loved the decor when we walked in but the greeter was not very friendly and it took a few minutes before our server attended us at the table (although it was a Monday night, early dinner so the place was quiet). When our server did speak to us she was not friendly either but quite brusque. The food was all amazing although our main meals all came as ready and not for us all to eat at the same time. Had my friends waited for mine to arrive their's would have been stone cold. The food was all amazing, really outstanding! That's why I will probably go back but I wish the owners would speak to their staff about being more welcoming and friendly.
I was taken here for my birthday, and the servers were very knowledgeable, the food OMG!! best food in Toronto, let alone best Mexican. I highly comment coming here, but I did notice many families there struggling to find food for kids. This is Mexican and it is spicy, and this is a tequila bar, that servers boom food, but where they shine is the drinks. Not recommended for people under 19 (maybe push it into the teens, but any children under 13 will be frustrating)
