Service was very good. Our server was great at picking wines for us. Unfortunately our meals were just ok. Two of us had short ribs that were very fatty and the other guest had the fish special and her vegetables were not cooked. For the price point I would have expected a bitter meal quality.
It was our anniversary. We wanted a very nice restaurant in which to celebrate. PAON was outstanding. The best thing is that is was not very busy on this particular evening and we has a very quiet dinner.
Excellent and exceptional. I’m definitely going back.
One of our very favorites since moving to Carlsbad. It is not inexpensive, but every penny spent is well worth it, because of the creative cuisine! Our favorites are the Chilean sea bass and the beef dishes. Appetizers are great and salads too! If we have guests visiting, this is where we take them.
Beautiful place, with outstanding service. Delicious food. The escargot melted in my mouth. Full of flavor. Had the lamb, it was very good medium rare and melted in my mouth side of wild mushrooms and spinach very flavorful and a side of mashed potatoes. Very nicely plated. I would highly recommend!
Good wine, food and service. Off season and not very busy. It was our anniversary and we got nothing special except a candle in the dessert we ordered.
We were given a nice table for four to celebrate anniversaries and birthdays. Service was great and the food was exceptional.
We have dined here many times. The food is always very good - not great but always very good. Ample portions make up for the higher prices. The wine list is voluminous but accessible and fairly priced - though I wish it had a better California selection. We had the onion soup and it is sort of a take on French Onion soup but not as richly flavored/textured. I had the salmon on lentils and it was slightly overdone and under-seasoned. My wife had the tuna and it was done perfectly but also under-seasoned. The vibe and clientele are a more older crowd - this isn't a hipster place. So the noise level is manageable for table side conversation. Outside on their front terrace is a wonderful place to eat and even quieter. All in all, it is worth a try, especially since north San Diego county doesn't offer that many good upscale, quiet restaurants. It can be pricey. The tab for 4 people appetizer, dinner entree and wine was $450 and we ordered less expensive wine
This was our first time at Paon and it is now our new favorite restaurant. Everything we had was cooked to perfection and was art on a plate. Can't wait to visit again soon.
Our experience was five-star. I ordered pheasant and my wife ordered venison. We split a pear, Gorgonzola and baby greens salad, one salad is plenty for two. The foi gras superb, and brioche bread pudding with vanilla ice cream topped it all off.
$174 our the door isn’t bad for this high quality.
The service was timely and attentive. There was a loud table nearby, so the noise level was the only drawback...I don’t really blame the restaurant, the people at that table would’ve been loud during a tornado!
All in all, fantastic & we’ll be back.
Food was quite good and the setting was nice. We enjoyed our experience for the most part even though we thought the service was a bit odd. The maitre d’ pretty much served our entire dinner and couldn’t have been less engaging. Despite that, we had a very enjoyable meal.
Excellent food and service. Best meal experience I have had in a very long time and I dine out frequently.
The menu was beautiful, the fish was cooked to absolute perfection.
Always wonderful food, service & ambience. Excellent wine cellar too. This is consistently the best dining in North County San Diego
It simply could not have been a nicer evening. All four of us had different entrées and we would rate them 10 out of 10! Fabulous service and atmosphere.
A wonderful and elegant restaurant with excellent food and an amazing wine list.
Great service, amazing menu, always delicious and wonderful flavors. The staff is very attentive and friendly. A very nice place for a special occasion or date
EXCELLENT AS USUAL! HAVE BEEN THERE MANY TIMES AND THEY HAVE MAINTANIED THERE EXCELLENCE,
Fantastic food and service. We will be back often.
Lovely meal and nice menu choices. Wine list a bit pricey. I'll bring my own wine next time.
I had put in a request for a quiet table for my wife's birthday. We were initially seated at the back near the hallway to the bathroom and entrance to the kitchen. I asked to be moved which we were. We then proceeded to order. The waiter was very good with his wine pairing recommendations. However, the salad and soup that we ordered prior to our entrees never showed up. And this was on a quiet Monday. Our server was very apologetic and comped us some wine, but it was really hard to believe an entire course was forgotten. My wife had the steak special which was excellent. I had the duck prepared 2 ways. The breast was prepared perfectly, the duck leg was dry and the skin was overly crispy. Might have been an off night, but at this point, we won't be going back.
The Seabass entree was amazing. The butternut squash soup was one of the best we have ever tasted! We will be back to Paon.
Fabulous! Delicious and authentic French food that just was made even more special by having James as our server! We had a wonderful time and will come back soon again!
Good food, great desert. A bit on the expensive side. The service is outstanding.
As other reviewers have pointed out, Paon has an excellent wine list, and our server was excellent. Our food was not an example of the best we have eaten, but it was certainly better than other meals we had in the vicinity of Carlsbad.
We dined during the winter. A previous mean at Paon was enhanced by eating outdoors in the summer.
Worth the drive! I live about 25 minutes from PAON and have eaten here several times in the last year. The menu selections are wide ranging and food quality is excellent. The service is attentive without being bothersome. I think its the best restaurant for food quality and experience in North San Diego county.
Dined with my husband this evening for the first time, and it was a very enjoyable evening. Service was great and attentive, and the atmosphere very relaxing.
I ordered a menu special- the sea bass, which was so moist and flavorful-cooked in a basil butter with seasonal veggies-so good! We would definitely return.
Awesome as always
Had a visitor from out of town so three of us took a patio seat (even with the cool night). The heaters did the trick....it was perfect, and not as loud as inside.
The wine list is incredible. If you don't find a wine you like at a price you are willing to pay, go to a beer joint. The wine I chose they were out of, so Steve brought another from the same appellation that was higher priced, and gave it to me for the price of my bottle.
The food was perfect. Sizes/portions were just right. The service was spot on from menu knowledge, timing of the apps to the meal, refilling the water to bread service.
Truly a great way to spend an evening.
Our second dinner there, and in every way...Excellent!
Very nice atmosphere and our entries were excellent. Prepared as requested with a nice presentation.
Our waiter and his service was exceptional!!! That alone made the trip worth while.
From the food standpoint we were disappointed....The menu is very interesting with items and ingredients that wet the appetite. My friend and I each ordered one of the specials of the day described lusciously by our waiter. Unfortunately the results were not impressive......a shrimp dish where the shrimp, which were flavorful, were over cooked; the other a spinach salad that was supposed to include prosciutto and burrata cheese but was barely there and tasteless.
Though disappointed we did not take the time to share our critique with our waiter who I have no doubt would have wanted to provide us with an alternative.
steve barr and staff do an outstanding job - every time we dine at PAON!!!!!!!!!!!! barry ross
Paon is our "go to" restaurant for any occasion. As former San Francisco people, finding a really good restaurant in North County can be a challenge. Paon is the best we have found for the ambiance, price and the FOOD. We really prefer it to any of the Cohn group offerings or Viggilucci's by far. Their duck or pheasant are out of this world, and the wine list is wonderful and not over priced. We are fans!!!
Best restaurant in Ca. Choices are quite varied. Portions are large. Food is delicious and the service is fantastic.
Consistently excellent! A real North County gem in Carlsbad Village.
My first time here at this restaurant was a great experience. My date was Vegan, so the waiter recommended a few dishes that the chef made up special for her. Everything was great except the noise level was very high which made conversation a bit tough for listening.
very good food in a pleasant ambiance and an extensive, excellent wine list
This was a first date experience and there turned out to be two tables w/ 6 women each having holiday lunches. Well, the noise level was high to start and only grew worse as the wine flowed. I've eaten in quieter bowling alleys. The staff could have been more helpful and suggested seating at a quieter table to start and yes, I could have been more alert.
