Ostra Ratings and Reviews
Very much over priced by almost a factor ...
Very much over priced by almost a factor of 2X's. Everything was great but $200 for a dinner for two is a bit much. Would only recommend this for a very special occasion and even then there are lots of less expensive alternatives. One thing that was annoying were reservations. The restaurant indicated that the only time they had available was 5:45pm yet until we left at around 7:30pm there were quite a few tables empty. Don't know why a restaurant would do such silly things but this one does.

Our greeting on entry was not very good as our table did not appear ready at 17.45 when the restaurant opened at 17.30.
However we were looked after by our server Jessa magnificently.
She explained the dishes and complimentary wines excellently.
She rescued the start to turn it into a meal to remember.
Well done Jessa.

I don't usually write reviews, but here goes. First, don't book a second seating at Ostra after 730pm. We were seated 35 minutes after our 830pm reservation, and didn't finish until quarter to midnight. The experience getting our reserved table was among the worst I have had in over 30 years in Boston. Three times the hostesses didn't not tell us the truth, saying "your table is being re-set" or similar, when it turned out to not be true. Rather than being straightforward and transparent, apologizing, giving us an accurate explanation of the situation, buying us a drink or something similar to what other restaurant staff and management have done, Ostra staff made things much worse by not telling the truth. I think Columbus Hospitality should revamp its hiring and training policies. The experience was like dealing with a counter agent at the airport for a delayed, then further delayed, then delayed again, then finally canceled flight. (yes, it was that bad.) The food was good, although some of the dishes were over engineered. The wine list , as others have said, is expensive for what it is. Why do restaurants continue to use traditional wine markup multiples from years ago when the price of some wine regions have compounded way in excess of inflation? Perhaps that's what a relatively new restaurant has to do. The more informed the diner, the more offensive it is to see OK wines at over inflated prices.

It was super crowded and fun atmosphere. We ordered and got our starter (oysters) and then it took forever (around 45 minutes) for the second round of appetizers to come. The manager finally came to the table as we were looking around for our server and apologized because of a mix-up in the kitchen. They ended up comping one of our three bottles of wine. The food was good but the lack of service kind of turned us off as it's a very expensive restaurant.

Ostra not only had great food, but it was beautiful. Gorgeous lighting and large photo murals were a pleasure to look at.
I had branzino and my grandson had salmon, both were perfectly prepared. The appetizers were delicious. And the dishes were lovely to look at. Aesthetically the place was a feast for the eyes, the mouth and with live piano, the ears as well.

Busy and noisy restaurant, busy staff, excellent beet salad. My date enjoyed his paella, my halibut was good, but not outstanding. Desserts were fun, creative (caramel popcorn on the Chocolate Hazelnut Cremeux was inspired).

Ostra creates something that's been lost on many restaurants these days, an overall dining experience. From the way we were greeted to the last conversation I had with one of the servers, it was a wonderful experience. Cocktails and all food selections, including the outstanding coconut flan, were simply excellent.

Great food. Came here to celebrate mom's birthday. Our waiter was not particularly friendly - the Russian guy, but the bus boy was great. Initially we were given a table near a very noisy group and when we asked for a table in the middle (one was open) we were denied by the hostess, however the manager is awesome and gave us the table we wanted. The food was delicious. I will be coming back. We got the carpaccio and grilled octupus for apps and I got the sea bream for an entree. Parents god branzino and halibut which were also good, but I loved the sea bream. For dessert they brought delicious ice cream with a "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate even though we did not even order desert. Overall loved the food, manager helped us get a good table (go for ones in middle of the room). Will be coming back for sure.

While our food was very good service was another problem. First our server convinced me to order a dinner portion of what I ordered as a appetizer as it appeared on the menu. Too much food and double the cost. Then when I ordered the wine the wine I said "We will have the Arneis" and that was that. She brought the wine and showed us the bottle. We had just flown from the west coast and we tired and I recognized the bottle but did not have the wine list. It seems there are 2 Arneis on the menu and the one (which in California would never been the price we were charged) was twice as much as the one we thought we ordered. She said that she showed us the bottle which we approved but i said she never asked us "which one" when we ordered. Looks like someone who wanted to run up the bill to make sure she got a bigger tip.

Very upbeat restaurant in downtown Boston. Very friendly and attentive wait staff. I ordered a bottle of Pinot Noir that was slightly corked, and without hesitation it was replaced! The fish is awesome....I am a fisherman, and quite fussy about my fish, and Ostra did not disappoint. My halibut was moist and flavorful, perfectly prepared. Our party also had delicious monkfish and squid. The oysters were opened and served perfectly, with a condiment dish of mignonette, cocktail sauce, hot sauce, lemon, and horseradish....just a great presentation! Can't wait to go back!!

The atmosphere is upscale without being snooty. The waiter was warm and the service was precise. The salt encrusted fish was superb as were the vegetables served with it. The gnocchi appetizer was also delicious. It is expensive but you get what you pay for.

The food at Ostra is of very high quality. Every dish was well presented, well prepared
and with excellent flavors. The desserts are creative and very very good. The service was
OK, but a bit hurried. The facility is very attractive with a modern vibe, but the noise level was higher than I would have liked. Overall, I would highly recommend it for the food.

What a lovely experience! Wonderful food and Great service. One of the best restaurants I have ever been to. Note- Expensive-$150 for two of us- but that included drinks and desserts. All in all-we would go again is heart beat!

Ostra is a great restaurant. If you like great seafood, it is hard to beat. The menu is terrific, executed to a T; the service team is professional and well trained knowing the menu, cocktail, and wine by the glass and by the bottle; and the ambiance is terrific.

Ostra came recommended by a few friends who reside in the Boston area. It did not disappoint. The food was amazing and the service outstanding. We were fortunate to have a table just inside the door to the right. (While it was near a small service office, it was much quieter than the rest of the restaurant.) Our waiter was Michael. Everyone in our party of six (6) commented on his professionalism, personality, and outstanding knowledge of the menu. He impressed us all. He is a true asset to the Ostra team. We would highly recommend Ostra and highly recommend Michael as your waiter.

Thought it was very nice. Best oysters I have ever eaten. Sweet and clean flavor. Nice presentation. My husband and I shared 3 lb lobster prepared beautifully w fall veges. Only one problem, as it was overlooked. Great staff and responsive waitress took care of us.

The food is incredible, everything was utterly delicious, the service was okay, efficient but a tad disinterested, it was rather loud and the vibe lacks warmth but overall a good experience and definitely worth it for the amazing food, the octopus starter is the best I've ever eaten!

Ostra is trying too hard and not achieving its goal. The high point of the evening came earliest - the grilled octopus appretizer which was brilliantly cooked and well-seasoned. The escargot appetizer was bland and unremarkable in its red wine risotto. For main dishes, we ordered the 3 lb. lobster and the Valencian paella. The lobster arrived pre-cut and while flavorful it was overcooked. It was served with delicious heritage vegetables but that hardly redeemed the $72 price. The bland, tomato-ey paella was so overcooked that it was almost inedible with both the delicate shellfish dried out and the rice carbonized to the bottom of the paella pan. We did enjoy the concord grape sorbet. The wine list is quite extensive and quite expensive, with a mark up that is quite a bit higher than average for Boston. The service was pleasantly attentive without being intrusive but we did find the room noisy and conversation challenging.

I have the luxury of eating in many cities. Ostra had many high ratings but I found the food to be under seasoned and over cooked. The fried oysters were very good but the calamari was very rubbery and the dipping sauce was needing seasoning. The Paella was just ok. The bread prior to the meal was delicious. The best thing about the meal was the truffles they give to you when the check comes

The staff were very welcoming and helpful. As an out of country visitor, the extra effort was very much appreciated.
The cuisine was heavenly! Our compliments to the chef. It was a culinary experience that we won't ever forget 🙂
We celebrated our first wedding annivers ...
We celebrated our first wedding anniversary here last night. Most importantly, the food was incredible. It lived up to the very high expectations set by foodie friends of ours and we were not disappointed there.
My disappointments came with the service. I called a week prior to our dinner to let them know this was for our anniversary, and the host let me know that they'd request a nice table for us and could put a nice anniversary note on our dessert. When I spoke with them again the day before to confirm, the anniversary was mentioned again. When we arrived, there were 4 or 5 women at the host station, and only one barely greeted us. We were shown to our table, which was in the section closest to the entrance, right next to the kitchen. The evening progresses and service is mostly friendly but curt. No mention of the anniversary. Dessert comes at the end, no Happy Anniversary on the plate as promised. I didn't wan't to make a big deal over something that was complimentary, so I didn't mention anything.
We picked up our car from the valet and drove all the way to Somerville and parked at our next destination before realizing the valet had not left our key in the vehicle (it's a push-button start). As the car had been turned off already, we were stranded. Ostra did send their car service to Somerville to drop off our key, but made it seem like an inconvenience or like it was our mistake. Problem solved and didn't ruin our night, but did leave a bad taste in my mouth after everything else.
Maybe they were just having an off night, but Ostra kind of dropped the ball on us service-wise. Highly recommended for food, but speak up about your special occasion when you arrive to avoid a little disappointment in your evening.
