La Bergerie - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
The food was superb. I ordered lobster and my husband ordered steak. The lobster was cooked perfectly. There was more lobster meat in this dish than I have had at lobster feasts. My husband is still talking about the steak - how well it was cooked and the size of the portion.
The service was not quite up-to-par. The restaurant was full and our waiter seemed to have too many tables to oversee.
Excellent restaurant. This is our go-to place for really nice meals. Excellent food and service in an environment where people at the table can easily hear each other. We're sorry that the current location is now closed, but we look forward to its opening in 2019(?) elsewhere in Old Town.
Rare to find a quiet place for special conversation and outstanding traditional french cuisine, but La Bergerie was exactly what we wanted. It was obvious that the short staffing was unexpected, so the manager and wait staff were eager to please even they were rushed and delayed. Duck L'orange was especially good.
Best French Food I've ever tasted!! I had the onion soup, foie gras and grilled steak. The onion soup and foie gras was the best I have had. I have travelled all around the world and I have never tasted better than at La Bergerie. I have been here several times and I have never been disappointed. The employees treat you authentically like life-long friends. In such a busy area such as DC, hospitality is a rare and it was a very welcomed surprise to find in very good restaurant. I had my steak with béarnaise sauces and I wanted so much to lick the sauce dish but I instead use the fresh French bread they provide with the dinner. The crème burlee was so good with actual vanilla caviar and not vanilla extract. I also had a scallop. . .I generally do not like scallop but tasted it based on my husband's encouragement. It was like heaven with it being so light, delicate and fluffy. I recommend this place to everyone for any special occasion or treat or just because you want some really good food!!
As long time residents of Alexandria we thought we would try La Bergerie with some good DC friends. We were all looking forward to a nice holiday evening in Old Town. The good news was we had a great time with our friends, with lots of time for great conversation. The bad news we had very poor and erratic service throughout the entire evening. It didn’t start well when after 10 minutes waiting for the waiter, that I finally got up from the table and requested someone at least take our wine order. Once he arrived I even had to plead for a wine recommendation. From that point on the service was very uneven, with an especially long delay between our first and main course. As mentioned at least we had plenty of time for good table conversation. The food was good with the lobster the standout dish. The tournedos de boeuf was just average and Branzino was also acceptable. Notably the most disappointing dish was the onion soup. I know from experience that often restaurants have “off nights”. Hopefully this was the case for La Bergerie. Based on our very poor service experience, while I’m hesitant to recommend we might be willing to return at sometime in the future.
I found La Bergerie to continue a tradition of fine dining on our respective birthdays. Shortly after the making the reservation I received a communication that the restaurant was moving at the end of December. On the evening of the dinner, we arrived 15 minutes early. The place was packed and they have no bar. We were told to come back but were allowed to check our overcoats. We were a little put off as this was for a special occasion and I wanted it to be perfect. There is no place to wait inside. Fortunately there was an event going on in the lobby of the building. We wasted the time there. Upon our return we were seated. Things seemed a little calmer and the second greeting was warmer. Although we waited a bit at first, the service was attentive. Then, one of the waiters explained that the restaurant was closing and it had lost many staff. Things were a bit slower than normal. Nevertheless, the food was outstanding and the atmosphere warm and sophisticated. The dinner for two was $211 including tip. I would go there again. As we left the hostess mentioned their re-opening in a planned new location was not definite. What a shame. We understand they have been operating for 40 years. This was our first time. Even though the experience was understandably imperfect, it feels like a great loss to the area. We Wish them luck.
They are closing. If you are thinking of going for one last time don't bother. The staff was inadequate for a less than full restaurant. The mixed drinks were poor. The service was almost non-existent. Our water glasses were never refilled during the meal. They delivered a soufflé which was ordered at the time of our ordering our meal without ever taking the rest of our desert order. We had to literally yell at a passing waiter to put in the rest of our desert order. They have always done a nice presentation on things at tableside. That was a joke last night. We have been going there several times a year for many years for special occasions. Last night it was just sad how far they have let the quality of the place fall.
My boyfriend took me to La Bergerie this past weekend to toast a special occasion. This was our first time at the restaurant and we were thoroughly impressed with the cuisine. It was a very authentic French dining experience. The portions were ample, and the wait staff were very professional. We look forward to frequenting their bistro in the Del Ray neighborhood.
After finding La Bergerie on a business trip last year, we all looked forward to returning on our annual trip. This restaurant is truly an amazing dining experience. Laurent and his team provide first class food in a beautiful setting. This is by far our favorite restaurant in the DC area.
We went there for my Brother in Laws bd. I had the Le Bergerie salad, shrimp cocktail and the Lamb trifecta for my entrée. I should have gotten my meat prepared medium well and brought a salt and pepper shaker. The food was poorly seasoned but that may be by designed for the cuisine. I have the chocolate lava dessert and it was ok. This spot was nothing to write home about the wait staff was fairly attentive. There is no reason to go back...
The ambiance is elegant without being stuffy and wait staff are well trained. As an older woman dining alone, I was treated with respect and shown to a prime table. My venison entree was perfectly prepared and the flavors were excellent. Although the prices are on the higher side, I felt that the quality of the meal and overall experience was well worth the cost. I would certainly return again when in Alexandria. It was the finest meal I had during a five day stay.
While a very nice restaurant with polite service, the food is nothing special. If you are nearby, it is worth it, but I would not travel too far to get there. The food was tasty but unremarkable. The wine list was way out of reach. The markups on wine were far more than at comparable restaurants and we had to keep asking to get our glasses refilled. Overall, not worth a repeat visit.
