Kobe Japanese Steak House, Maui Ratings and Reviews
Really disappointed with our experience. Lahaina locals celebrating our son's birthday 20th year in a row . Bartender was great when we first arrived but it went downhill fast from there. Ordered Sushi shortly after being seated and it came out finally just as the main course was being prepared. Busser came through once to collect empty plates and glasses so we had no room on the table and or had to clear our own dishes and glasses to make room throughout the meal. Chef was disengaged and to top it off we were rushed throughout the entire meal by front of the house. Spent a lot of money for 8 people in the bar - for sushi and entrees. Won't be back.
Easy to make reservations & we were seated immediately after our arrival. Orders for the table were timely, soup & salad served were unremarkable. Delicious Vegetables and Steamed rice served at no charge. Fried rice & garlic fried rice are extra. The Garlic fried rice contained excessive garlic in my opinion; but, my companion loved the regular fried rice. They serve an excellent mustard sauce & an asian sauce. However, I missed the "shrimp sauce" typically served on mainland. Otherwise, food was quite tasty. I had steak & shrimp and we both enjoyed our dinners. Some restaurants of this type serve a sorbet after; however, Kobe does not offer a complimentary dessert at this time.
The food was good once we had a chef arrive at our table. We ordered drinks and had the soup and then waited about 20 minutes for a chef to show up to cook our meals. it turned out OK but it was quite annoying to have to wait that long without any explanation.
Delicious food, but service was very slow. It took 45 minutes for our chef to show up after we were seated. We had an interesting table, and the lull in service allowed us to make some local friends. They did an excellent job of keeping up with our drinks, and the food was better than usual. I would still recommend this restaurant, and will go back.
Whenever we come to Hawaii, we go to the Kobe steakhouse for dinner. The last time we were here we said we didn't think we would come back again. But we decided to give it another chance this year. Not only has the amount of food they give you changed, the cost for the food is too high for what you get. We specifically ordered garlic fried rice. White rice comes with your meal. Kobe charges a $5 up charge for the garlic fried rice. That's ridiculous. Add to that the fact that we were the only two who ordered the garlic fried rice but after some of the people at our table saw it, 3 more people asked to have it for their meal too. There was no more garlic added, so the garlic that was prepared for two was divided up for five people. So the fried rice was not very garlicky. The vegetables were overcooked and had some burn spots on them, and again the amount of food you get for the price is just not worth it.
The "show" is very short. We will not go back.
My wife and I were drawn to Kobe many years ago by the 2-for-1 Entertainment coupon. We returned every year in our annual trek to Maui. We continued the tradition after the coupon disappeared. 5 years ago, we converted to plant-based eating (vegan). You wouldn't think Kobe would work, but it does. The chef happily cooks our dishes first in oil, rather than butter. We order one veggie dish and one tofu. It's a mountain of food - all healthy (except for the oil). We forgo the soup and shrimp appetizers, but still have plenty to eat. the chefs are entertaining, and the cost is more than reasonable. We paid $31 plus tip. That's less than we paid for breakfast at another restaurant. We enjoyed our dinner at Kobe's and the low cost so much that we are going again on this trip.
I can't wait to see what happens to Kobe and similar meat-based restaurants when people stop eating meat. Hopefully, they will be clever enough to offer more plant-based alternatives.
Every time we dine here they are petty about something. This time it was about validating parking. They told us they stopped validating parking last month and the sign outside the restaurant clearly states that they validate parking. We pushed the issue and they did take care of our parking, but told us it would be the last time. We told them to take down their sign if they're not going to validate parking. Soured the entire dining experience. I doubt we will ever come back.
My wife and I have visit the island of Maui two to three times a year and bring out family once a year. We have visited Kobe's restaurant for over 25 years and love it each and every time we visit. We will continue to enjoy Kobe's for as long as possible. Ron
Never been upstairs before but it was very hot it, I was sweating. No ventilation. I recommend sitting downstairs not as hot and smoky. Food was yummy. Garlic fried rice was good this time, garlic wasn't burnt. They don't sing happy birthday or give comp desert for birthdays. But good times
we always enjoy ourselves. the food is so delicious. my favorite is the scallops and steak. my husbands favorite is the opakapaka. if you get a good chef he'll cook and entertain you all the way . the service is excellent there is never no wait. check out Kobe's
We came for the sunset special which is very well priced. Our chef was a lot of fun. Looking at some of the other tables, the chefs were less engaged. The food was not great but also not bad. The beef was a little chewer than we might have liked... At full price I might have been less satisfied but at the price we paid, we felt positive.
Upgrading to fried rice from white rice added $4 and adding garlic to that was an additional $1 more. At the sunset prices, that was a 25% or more upgrade!
The chef was fantastic. However, the reservations were a bit late, which was alright, but it took 45 minutes to get our first dish/soup, which was completely flavorless. The server wasn't too attentive. We asked for a cold glass for the beer, which was never brought. Refills took forever to come and didn't come until the chef actually left to tell the waiter. The grill was pretty dirty from the last party and we had to ask them to wipe down and clean the grill before cooking our food.
I was disappointed with this restaurant. I have been to many Japanese Steak houses and this was by far the worst. The service from the minute we walked in the door was horrible at best. The waiter that took our drink orders was not only rushing us but down right rude to a group of four that was seated next to us. The food was mediocre. The only saving grace was the cook was entertaining. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. I wish I would have read the Yelp reviews before making my reservation.
The best vegetables on the island my 11 year old and 13 year old ate all of their veggies and even wanted more . The food is spot on and we are going back for a second visit tonight i would highly recommend the fried rice and filet great food with mostly locals
Kobe's is fun, entertaining dining! The chef prepares the meal right at the table. If you are familiar with teppanyaki style dining, then you know it is a treat. Food is very tasty and we'll prepared, plus we got treated to the biggest "volcano" this side of the big island. A fun, delicious evening.
