Katsuya- South Beach Ratings and Reviews
This was our first time at Katsuya- South Beach. We chose the restaurant because of the location in the SLS hotel and we have never been disappointed. My wife and I ordered the tasting menu. Wow. Delicious and expertly prepared and presented. The portions seemed small at first but by the end of dinner I was unable to finish my plate. This is now on our definite list for next trip.
This restaurant promised much more than it delivered. The raw fish (sushi/sashimi) was average, the sushi rice was wet and not what you’d expect from a place like this. It’s very pricey. We’ve done much better at our local place on West 72nd St. in NYC which is about 1/3 of the price. Very disappointing.
Service was awful. I had been here on 2 other occasions and was happy to recommend it. Unfortunately, this time it took us 45 minutes to get our drinks, we had to get up twice to track down someone to help us. They said they would comp one round of drinks due to the problems but the bill didn't reflect that promise. At that point we were so annoyed we didn't feel like wasting any more of our time trying to get them to re-do the bill and we left. I will not be back.
My biggest complaint might be how difficult it is to find. In a hotel. In the back. Through another restaurant. No signage. Ha. Close tables and loud noise so don’t go if you want quiet privacy. As for the food, it was pretty good. The rolls are average but we also got tuna, ceviche, and goyza. I have to single out that the Waygu goyza was hands down the best I’ve ever had. Might be a tad pricy but not that far out of line. My date was surprised there wasn’t a glass of wine under $20. I’d recommend the place though!
They sat us upstairs in a room which had a totally different ambience then the main room. There were TVs on with sports games etc. They should have informed us of this when we made the reservation. Had we known, we would not have chosen to eat here. I will not return as they were not even apologetic or willing to accommodate.
Food was bland, uneventful and slightly overpriced. I had sweet shrimp and a roll as an app. The shrimp was over breaded and bland. The oil tasted as if hasn't been changed in quite some time. The roll was tiny and bland as well. It tasted like supermarket sushi. I love the hotel but was unimpressed by this restaurant. we decided to leave after apps. Unfortunately, I will not be returning. However, on a positive note, our server was nice and attentive.
We know this place well. Last night was a waste of an evening.
It was all well until newly 100+ people from a firm showed up and the noise level became intolerable. It was so loud we were yelling at each other sitting directly next to one another. We are our current round of dishes, chugged the wine and left asap.
The restaurant honestly should have closed the place for this large group. All the waiters were occupied and it made no sense.
Other couple also left as quick as they could.
Comida excelente!!
We have eaten in many sushi restaurants, and I expected somehing more from Katsuya, maybe our choice of dishes was not the best, but overall the experience was not good. We ordered a couple of the signature starters, the crispy rice with tuna was too dry, but on the other the baked crab was quite nice. We were not very happy with the sashimi and same thing happenned with the wagyu fillet. The rice beer was excellent though. Overall no good value for money.
I was welcomed by a friendly hostess who accompanied me to the bar (eating alone) while the chef's chanted some Japanese greet. Entertaining, even though I have no idea what they said. I followed the recommendations of my server Andres, who was very polite, attentive and professional. Started with the Sticky Fried Rice and Tuna, very tasty. For a hot plate I ordered the Miso Cod, that was also very tasty and so soft you could use your chop-sticks. The only disappointing serving of the meal were the chicken skewers with a heavy teriyaki glaze. Nothing to write home about on that one but, I will definitely go back and try some other more creative dishes. I did not have any wine this time but the list has many good options by the glass and bottle. I've heard the bar scene upstairs gets pretty busy towards the weekend... next time :)
