Il Fornaio - Burlingame Ratings and Reviews

We have dined here for quite a few years. We have always had a fabulous meal and excellent service. This last visit was disappointing. The service was terrible. Our server was non existent. We had to ask for everything. One person in our party had a dish that was way over spiced. Too spicy actually. Our server never asked nor did she refill any of our beverages. Needless to say, I spoke with the manager who was very apologetic. I said she must be having a bad day because she did a horrible job. the manager said that she was 1 of their better servers so she must be having an off day. We will go back and hopefully not have that same server.

None of the 6 of us were very excited about our meals. Some descriptors were: soggy salad, bland pasta, salty dish. We had a reservation and still weren't sat for over 15 min and the servers were not around as much as we'd hoped. Unfortunate, it's a beautiful space!

We had reservations for 10 and a great table was all set up and ready for us when we arrived a bit early! Everyone was wonderful....very attentive and the service and breakfast was delicious!!! I highly recommend Il Fornaio!!!

This wasn't our first time here. Every time we have enjoyed the fabulous food, service and the great hospitality by all the hostesses, host, waiters and service people. Valet parking helps people with handicaps and can't walk too far. I recommend II Fornaio for everyone to try.

I was disappointed that the staff did not acknowledge my "special request" for a window table and that this was a birthday celebration. Dining alone with my daughter, I felt we received minimal service. The birthday aspect was not acknowledged by the hostess or the server.
The server didn't even ask if we wanted to see the dessert menu and I was dining with a 10 year old. When we opened our leftovers later, we found that the portions we saved for later were not all included. I don't know, I've dined at Il Fornaio lots of times with coworkers and have received much more attentive service. Does one have to ask to have the table crumbed between the meal and dessert? We'll probably leave Il Fornaio to business meetings and look for a different special occasions restaurant for our family in the future.

Didn't have basic menu items, food arrived on cold plates, food not presented in an appetizing manner:
Terrible experience last night. So disappointing after years and years of dining at il fornaio. Even worse, given that it we were there to celebrate our wedding anniversary.
Opted for seasonal tasting menu which sounded scrumptious. Sadly, my preferred starter 'ran out' before it ever reached me as had two out of four main course options.
Didn't complain and selected alternatives.
Food arrived on cold plates, which immediately started to cool the food and made the sauce on the over cooked Arctic char immediately congeal. Ugh. Then the polenta that was served on my plate and my husbands plate was tasteless. I guess chef has forgotten to season it. Actually we had been told that kitchen had ran out of polenta, but the plates did appear with polenta that clearly had been russled up in a hurry. So awful. Since I cook polenta, I know how it should be seasoned to make it pleasing and edible. The badly paired leeks and tomatoes mixture did nothing to lessen the blow of the bland polenta.
Very disappointing anniversary dinner. Even the strudel was limp and had been heated in a microwave perhaps. Worst strudel ever, tasted of or perhaps had been defrosted? It certainly wasn't fresh and was nothing like it was described. The gelato was fantastic though.
Best part of menu was the barley soup.
I am not sure we can ever come back.....

We were in San Mateo, so this Burlingame location is nearby. Booked on Open Table phone app.
Food was fantastic. Service was very good. But the noise was wayyyy too much. The acoustics are poor as the restaurant was filled to capacity, including a very large party.
It seems the noise goes up to the ceiling and comes slamming down again on patrons. The noise got louder and louder and dining was not a relaxing evening at all.
I am willing to try another evening to see if there's any difference without a super large party there.

We were in town for a business meeting and had dinner here. The ambiance of the restaurant is great, very pleasant. We needed to be seated before our reservation due to the shuttle pick up and the hostess got us in. All the staff were great and very helpful. The food was good, I had a pasta dish and my husband had fish.

This place never ever disappoints. Food is always fresh and intriguing. The service was especially notable -- sure wish I could remember her name. I finished my port and forgot it! She was SO attentive and smart that I am considering calling so I could refresh my memory of her name.

Usually solid place. Service good but very loud. Lots of large groups. Prices I think have gotten a bit high for what Il Forniao is. My portion was a very very small piece of salmon for nearly $30. Nothing special so I felt far too expensive for the quality and quanity. But I will return but probably chose more pastas than their meat/fish choices. Pasta seems more consistent in quality and flavor.

We have visited Il Fornaio since 1997 in Carmel and Burlingame whenever we are in California. We always felt that the Carmel restaurant offered much better choices. Over the last few years, we have grown consistently disappointed with both the menu and food preparation at the Burlingame restaurant. After our visit Monday evening, no one in our party of five was happy. The veal dish was tough, the lasagna was below par, and the other dishes were unremarkable. The house wine was a good value. We won't return to the Burlingame restaurant on our next visit to the Bay Area. We live in Greenwich, CT.

The food server was unfamiliar with the menu. Did not suggest any vegan alternatives. I asked to have our plates split to share. Never got new plates and the manager tried splitting the meals in front of us. He destroyed the presentations of the plates and his tie kept touching the food and plate. I suggested that he have the cooks do it but he insisted that he had it under control.
Will be back but with low expectations for the waitstaff.
Bartender was personable.

The restaurant has been around for over 15 years and it has always been a popular spot for family and friends' get-together. The pizza and pasta we ordered are delicious and the breakfast brunch is good too.
This place can get noisy because the sound bounces off from all the big glass windows. so when the room is full it is hard to hear

Not as expected. The chicken breast was a bit dry and overcooked and the accompanying spicy sauce was watery and bland. My wife's s sea bass was fresh, but came out unseasoned and without much taste. Both of our meals were served lukewarm. the dining room is open and noisy; there was a children's birthday party at 6 pm on a Friday night that added to the din. The Caesar salad was very good as were the roasted Yukon gold potatoes. If they had been hot instead of lukewarm, they would have been much better.

I chose Il Fornaio because I like the atmosphere, the food is consistently very good and because it was close to the airport. Il Fornaio is consistent. Two of us had a cup of minestrone soup, two of us had a Ceasar salad, and the third person had another salad. All were very good. The service was also very good.

We're longtime fans of Il Fornaio and mishaps happen occasionally. Very busy Wednesday night but with a 6:30PM reservation and no tables available, we stayed at the bar and was served our entrees about 8PM, and one was sent back too cold to enjoy. Eventually, the Regional veal special tasting menu and salmon were both delicious.

Excellent food, service and ambiance. Nice dining spot after theater in SF....Great because
we wanted to get out of the city, but wanted to eat before returning to the South Bay.

Great wine and cocktail selection as well. Not terribly quiet, but very pleasant surroundings!

We were a party of 6, Willie our server was knowledgeable and friendly in explaining the specials and answering questions. The prix fix menu was the choice of 5 in our group. Everybody enjoyed the variety offered. Note, even though the bar has been moved to where the coffee shop was, the noise level is still high in the dinning room.
