Grünauer Ratings and Reviews

Mallory was our server and she was very courteous to us as well as helpful (give that lady a raise). Nothing but a perfect meal with professional staff. I have never had an authentic German meal before and I loved it. Whenever I'm in KC again, I williams every effort to reserve a table!

Outstanding service from start to finish. Our reservation was ready on time, table was very nice. Wonderful wine suggestion by our server. Food was great. Not too noisy - we liked the intimate setting. It is a great place to dress up and take someone for a occasion. Or you can sit at the bar or outside and be comfortable in jeans.

Grünauer's always delivers. We brought our teenagers with us for a night out. With reservations, we were seated exactly at the promised time. The bar is a little noisy and hard to talk in so we went outside since it was a nice night. Grünauer's food is to delicious, no matter what you order. My wife and I split al a schnitzel, my son had spatzle, and my daughter got a salad and a bratwurst. Everyone loved their selection. For dessert, we got the apple strudel and the flourless chocolate cake. We all agreed the apple strudel was the better choice. The cake was a little too much for topping off a heavy meal. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Good German/Austrian fare with some updates. My Jågerschnitzel did not disappoint, its mushroom sauce was thick and flavorful. Good selection of beers and wines. Excellent service. The bar area is somewhat separate, which is nice. We went latish and the room was not too noisy but, with all the wood and the high ceilings, I suspect when the dining room is full, the noise level can be conversation-challanging.

We completely enjoyed our experience. Our only see suggestion is your asking if it is a special occasion, it should be documented as such. We were celebrating my son's birthday and a dessert on the house would have been a lovely expression of your appreciation of our celebrating that occasion at your restaurant. However, there was no knowledge meant, Hence, wondering why we were asked at the time of our reservation

We always enjoy eating here since we found it by accident a couple of years ago. Whenever we go to first Fridays, this is our restaurant of choice for dinner before looking at the great artists in the crossroads area. I have my daughter hooked on the restaurant as well!

Great meal. Great staff. Had a reservation for 5pm and half the party couldn't arrive until a half hour after the set reservation time (It was on a First Friday with construction, also coming in from out of town) so the staff was very patient and understanding of our situation. The food was a bit expensive but very good in quality and they served a lot in each dish so I had leftovers to enjoy later. Overall good restaurant and open table worked perfectly for the reservation!

Delicious dinner. We decided to try this restaurant, which I found on Open Table, on a Saturday night. It was Oktober Fest outside but that did not affect the food or our service, both of which were very, very good. We have lived in Germany and traveled back to Germany and Austria several times since then and the food was very authentic. Our waitress was very attentive. We had the pork special and a jager schnitzel, an Oktober bier, and a chocolate dessert. All delicious. My only issue is that the restaurant is very noisy, since it was in an old warehouse. As the room filled up later in the evening, the noise level actually decreased. Overall, very good experience and we will return.

The food was good, authentic from my memory of the region. Not every family's recipe is the same and some of the items were not exactly as I remembered and loved (red kraut for instance was not sour enough for me), but all in all it was an experience that was unmistakably authentic. The beer list was top notch and the bartenders were knowledgeable about their lineup.
Some of the food was less than piping hot, I attribute this to the ongoing Octoberfest and reduced kitchen staff. Had we been there on a normal evening I would have sent one of the plates back.

This was our second time eating at Grunauer. We had family in town & decided this would be a wonderful place for lunch & it certainly was. We sat outside on their patio at a table near the middle. The sun kept us warm even though it was only about 60 degrees. The only nuisance were the bees that kept trying to sip our drinks.
I ordered the traditional schnitzel which is served with a cucumber potato salad (soooo good, I could eat a whole plate of just that). Other meals ordered were the schnitzel stuffed with creamed spinach and the sausage plate - both of those were also amazing.
For dessert we split the Topfenstrudel mit Schlag (cheese strudel w/ whipped cream). mmmmmmm what a perfect ending to a perfect meal.

We had our wedding rehearsal here years ago and was very impressed with the food, service and ambience. We have come back multiple times since and each plate we've tried has been great. Cocktails are creative and delightful.

So wanted to love this restaurant but don't. GREAT SERVICE. Great location. Great bar menu. But you need to really love German food so that's my problem. If you love German food, you will probably love this restaurant. We had the mushroom appetizer -- way too much breading and very bland... Boring! I had the pasta w/ butternut squash... virtually NO flavor. The schnitzel Grunauer was so-so but the spatzl was simply horrid... again NO flavor. We were with a group and 4 loved it while 3 thought it was just OK. Awesome breads, lovely sausages, and I had an awesome pinot. GIVE THE PLACE A TRY AND SEE WHAT YOU THINK -- I may not be the best judge of German fare!

We often visit Grunauer when my husband's family is in town - it's become one of our favorites. We love the food, the extensive variety of alcoholic wines and liqueurs, the service - and just the ethnicity and experience of it all! It's a great place for a date, too. The history of the old Freight House building where it is located - adjacent to the train tracks and Union Station - all adds to the quaintness and excitement of a meal served there. I highly recommend reservations on the weekend, as they are quite popular and get full easily.

I had the Alaskan halibut served "en papillote", not very german, but VERY good. It was moist, light, and buttery -- cooked to perfection.
The service was friendly and appropriately casual.
We really enjoyed the meal after having not been treated all that well at Jacks Stak.

We have eaten here before. And spent a couple of years in Germany. The Jaegar schnitzel was fabulous as was the spaetzel. Not too mushy but not hard either. There was a small side of cabbage in with the spaetzel, that was also cooked to perfection. I am not a big cabbage eater, but this was really good. And their signature apple strudel was great. Service was also very fast and waitress was attentive without hovering.
