Just amazing food for Valentine's Day.
Wife got steak... that was tasty and perfectly well done. I took down the chicken pasta and a side of grits which was amazing.
Service wasn't perfect... missing dressing and a little slow to get us water. However the waiter did a great job going over the menu and there are going to be hiccups on Valentine's Day during dinner rush.
Can't believe we slipped into a last minute reservation. A great night!
I have been to Grill One Sixteen many times, even before it moved from North Tampa to South Tampa, but during this particular visit the service was unusually slow. From time of seating to time first greeted at table by wait-staff: 15 minutes. From receipt of menu and water to order taking: 30 minutes. From order placement to receipt of food: 25 minutes. This is unacceptable. As it turns out, they were short-staffed and everyone was pulling double-duty. We finally realized that our waiter was also serving as one of only two bartenders. That explained the long waits for service. We waited about 20 minutes to get the bill. I ended up paying my bill by going to the bar, waiting my turn and then requesting my table bill for me and my guests. As I have said, this was definitely not typical of ANY of my previous visits, so I hope this was just an off night issue.
Try the bacon and grits appetizer - one of our favorites. The grouper sandwich was delicious. It was a busy night in the dining room, but all the staff were at their best. It's clear they go out of their way to help everyone keep the restaurant moving efficiently. Shout out to Dre, Jennifer and Jill behind the bar - great service. Also to manager Chris, who never hesitates to jump in the action. Grille 116 is an outstanding place and one of our favorites.
One of our favorite Tampa restaurants. Steaks are always cooked to perfection. Variety of appetizers. Vegetarian options for our guests. Great wine list. Outstanding service - they recognize us when we return. Sufficient parking every time. (Or valet option) Love, love, love it!!
This was the first time visiting Grille 116 in about a year. Our food, as has been the case before, was delicious. However the atmosphere - and to some extent, the service - has definitely gone downhill.
This used to be a great place for special occasions - exquisite design, skilled wait staff and bartenders offering everything from craft cocktails to everyday well drinks, and delicious steaks and seafood. The food remains as good as I remembered, but everything else seems to have suffered in an attempt to bring in more business. While I don't ever remember a strict dress code before, I never would have considered arriving wearing a t-shirt and shorts. This no longer seems to be the case, as a majority of the other patrons seem to consider it "casual dining" in both dress and attitude. What was formerly an acceptable din of polite conversation and clanking and clattering of dishes was replaced with hoots and hollers from...less polite guests.
Another example that particularly stuck out to me: the menus now include the following text at the top, "We have re-engineered our menu to offer better value to you to make Grille 116 a local 'EVERY OCCASION' restaurant and not just a 'SPECIAL OCCASION' restaurant." Calling this out in red letters on your menu seems cheap and vulgar to me - more what I would expect from a place like Chili's or Olive Garden than an upscale steakhouse.
We made an 845p reservation for 3 people. Upon arrival, we waited for over 5 minutes to even be greeted. After checking in, we were told they didn't have any tables available DESPITE making a reservation. We were asked to wait at the bar area until a table became available. 30 minutes later...still no table. We went back up to the hostess to inquire and then finally got seated 10 minutes later; 40 minutes after our reservation time.
The server came over an took our appetizer order. We received the app, but didn't have silverware or plates. I asked for those items and be apologized and went to get them...so I thought. 10 minutes later and a cold appetizer...I flagged the waiter down again to get those items. He went to the back where I could see him on his cell phone. It still took an additional 5+ minutes to get the silverware and again he didn't bring plates. SERIOUSLY?!?!
We ordered a bottle of wine, which he clealy neglected to place the order, needed to be asked twice, and took over 30 minutes to receive.
The service continued in that fashion throughout our evening. Thankfully, the steaks were delicious and cooked properly! That was the only saving grace for this evening.
This was our third visit in as many weeks; two for lunch and one for dinner. The lunch was relaxing, enjoyable excellent service. Burgers, salads and sides excellent. Dinner was a disaster. Wait staff was awful. Felt like our server was new and did not know the menu. Meatloaf was very soft and too saucy, salad and salmon was good, chicken breast was good, shrimp and salmon was good. Grits excellent. Highly recommend for lunch, dinner not so much.
Trendy atmosphere, great food, good drinks! Florida Margaritas were excellent. Had the seared ahi tuna, Caesar salad, filet with garlic mash, and beignet-style donuts for desert. Everything was prepared well and tasted very good! Especially the donuts, get the donuts!!!
First time visitor for holiday luncheon (party of 3). The scallops over cheese grits was delicious and the presentation was lovely. Appetizers that we tried were the calamari (amazing, nice size portion, aioli was yummy but not even necessary as the calamari had good flavor) and the dumplings (very good). The other diners had the salmon with orange ginger glaze and the grouper piccata, both were very pleased with the dishes. We also tried the famous donuts for dessert.
The restaurant has made changes that I didn't like. My wife and I dined at the restaurant back in 2014 and it was a totally different experience then. The atmosphere was different. Dim lighting with the light up menus was very elegant. The food was better as well. It has lost its edge over other restaurants in that area. It's no different than a Chillis or Applebee's now. We were very disappointed.
We have been dining at this restaurant for several years and every time we are impressed with the quality of the food, the quality of the service but more importantly the value it is very difficult for locally owned restaurants to compete with the larger chains but somehow this place managed to do it and they always exceed our expectations.
