Goin' Coastal - Virginia Highland Ratings and Reviews
We visited Going Coastal for my daughter's 11th birthday because she specifically requested seafood. We made the reservation late so there were only early and late reservations available and the reviews were really positive so we had really high hopes. We arrived early and received a lovely table in the middle of the restaurant which features an open floorpan with views of the open kitchen. Our waiter was really friendly and personable - we loved him.
Our dinner selections on the other hand left alot to be desired. As a possible excuse - they just switched to the Fall menu 3 days prior - so there is something to be said for having no time to settle-in and make changes...we were definitely the guinea pigs here! I found the poke appetizer to be lacking in flavor - both the tuna and the seaweed salad aspects were cold and flavorless. As well I think the tuna had been cut too fine - it had more the appearance of catfood and less a sophisticated poke dish. The fall salads were ok - the dressing had an appropriate amount of bite and the pumpkin or squash balanced the tart with a rich sweet. They could've either been a bit larger or presented in a smaller dish because they looked really sparse and unattractive.
My fried seafood dish was fine, my daughter's salmon was ok, nothing bad but also nothing great....
I hope my opinions can be incorporated for more enjoyable nights for others in the near future. Thanks :)
The food and service is great. We had a mid sized party so seating was tight, its not spacious but the food makes up for it. The PARKING however was a headache thats the only really negative I have. Other than than it wad a good experience I would definitely go again.
CANNOT GET ENOUGH OF THIS PLACE
I am a frequent diner at Goin' Coastal, and this past experience only serves to confirm this establishment as being among my favorites. The ambiance is sublime, the service on point, and the food selection and preparation is outstanding. Many comments suggest that parking is an issue, but the lot a block away at Highland Woodworking has FREE spots reserved for patrons of Goin' Coastal every night of the week--just tell the attendant where you are dining. Virginia Highland remains a favorite neighborhood and Goin' Coastal is one of the dining superstars.
My wife and I had dined her several times in the past, so we brought another couple to join us. It was their first visit, and they absolutely raved about their experience. We shared oysters and the Crab and Lobster Dip as appetizers, then we had entrees of Shrimp n Grits, Lobster Mac and Cheese, and Yellowtail Tuna. Everything was delicious. Our server was on point and very personable. I'd highly recommend Goin' Coastal as a date spot, or for fun with with friends!
DELICIOUS AND SUSTAINABLE
Had an extremely enjoyable Friday evening meal with friends. I ordered the seafood sampler, a healthy mix of my favorite seafood items all boiled in a tasty broth. My friend rarely deviates from the lobster mac and cheese because not only is it delicious, but the portion is so large that he has a ready-made lunch for the next day. Wine selection is decent, and they always have a revolving selection of draft beer. This is a restaurant where you can easily and comfortably dine at the bar and not feel self conscious. I also notice that they have Amazon to go delivery available.
It was really good food and the service was good as well. It's a fairly loud and cozy restaurant. If it had one shortcoming, it was that it took forever to get our before dinner cocktail. The cocktail was very, very good, but I did not order another solely because it took so long for the first one to arrive.
We went for Sunday brunch, but the brunch menu was nothing like what is shown on your website. Our server and the bartender were great, but the food quality was not very good. I had the warm buttered lobster roll. I may be spoiled after living in Boston for 4 years, but what I got here was awful. The pre-cooked lobster meat had been chopped very finely and cooked again in butter, which resulted in rubbery lobster with crispy edges. Hubby had the steak and eggs, and his eggs were barely cooked, with lots of raw egg white left around the yolks. Unfortunately, there are much better brunch locations in Atlanta, so I doubt we will be back.
CONTINUES TO ELEVATE SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD CUISINE
Enjoyed a later evening Saturday meal on a warm summer night. The menu has changed for the season, and we started with the delicious crab and shrimp dip which has never disappointed. The seasonal menu offered a seafood platter which I could not resist--very generous portions of broiled seafood. My partner had the shrimp and grits which was also delectable.
The atmosphere is neighborhood-ish and the location in the very heart of Virginia-Highland is hard to beat. Well kept secret--park at the Highland Hardware lot and tell the valet you are patronizing Goin' Coastal and you will park for free.
We first ordered a fish of the day coastal style and it was tasteless. For $30 we didn't feel like it was worth spending the money. Our waiter very graciously replaced our order with the lobster Mac and cheese which was to die for! Very good customer service! Very nice manager, hostess, and wait staff.
Goin' Coastal Va-Hi is one of the best seafood restaurants in Atlanta and, while not exactly inexpensive, you get more than you pay for. Monday whole Maine lobster and Wednesday oyster specials are great values. Servers are the best--attentive without being intrusive. The bar is friendly and fun. We live nearby and go often. It's a neighborhood gem and worth a drive across town.
We love Goin' Coastal and enjoy having dinner there every few months. We usually just call ahead and reserve a couple seats at the bar. This past time we took my parents with us and so made a reservation the day before for a table. We enjoyed the usual delicious food and good, personalized service. It was a little loud for my father who wears hearing aids, but otherwise good atmosphere. It can be challenging to find parking as well, but worth it.
