Cooper's Hawk Winery & Restaurant - Wheeling Ratings and Reviews
In a word this place is terrible. All three of our entrees had to be sent back to the kitchen. One had hair on the plate. The menu fails to include ingredients that should be disclosed for food allergies. Our water glasses were not refilled. The food is overpriced. Avoid this place.
We love Cooper's Hawk wines and dining. That said, we will probably stick to the Brookfield location as we find the Wheeling location to be way too loud. There simply aren't enough noise dampening decor and so on a full evening you really have to shout across the table to be heard. The space is simply way too open to not have some sound buffers placed here and there. The food remains the same high quality offerings that we are used to. This particular evening I ordered a brandy old fashioned sweet and I would have rather the bar tender tell me that they didn't know how to make it than send what they did. After adding some additional sweetener it was tolerable, but certainly not a Wisconsin Brandy Old Fashioned that I'm used to.
Because we were just one couple, we were put at a table on the edge of the dinning area, lots of traffic and noisy. It seems when ever it is just two of us, we always get a bad table. You can tell when the hostess if giving you a bad table, because they look at the waiter bringing you there, like they hope we don't complain about it. We even had reservations...
We enjoyed our first ever visit to Cooper's Hawk on a Sunday evening. The service was very good. We were led to a table in the back and when we requested a booth that was not a problem at all. The gluten free options are great! Their wines are very good, but they serve ONLY their wines. The noise level became a bit louder than we like. There were many larger parties and families with kids (maybe because it was the Sunday after Thanksgiving...). We will definitely return.
We noted on our reservation that it was our anniversary. The restaurant was advertised as “upscale casual”. We were seated way in the back and a family was seated next to us. The children were running everywhere and loud. Both the children and at least one adult bumped into me multiple times. Why ask if we’re celebrating something if you have absolutely no intention to seat and/or serve us in any special way?! The meal and the wine were fine, but we were unable to truly celebrate at all!! We were led past many more intimate tables that would have been more appropriate. Very disappointing experience.
Nice wine bar and gift shop. Good size menu with lots of variety, but nothing out of the ordinary. My women friends and I dine there occasionally. It's casual and very friendly, and we can celebrate a birthday without feeling that we are annoying others.
But it's good news, bad news. The noise level is high. It can be difficult to hear the person directly across the table. If you are seeking a more intimate experience, I would suggest a different restaurant.
As usual the Coopers Hawk's experience was phenomenal. We decided to not do the traditional Thanksgiving dinner thing but instead make reservations. Best decision ever. The food was fantastic, service was awesome and the ambience was fantastic. This may be a new Thanksgiving tradition established for years to come.
Cooper's hawk is one of our favorite go-to places. We must have caught them on an off night, as the service and food were not up to their usual standards. This was unfortunate as we were celebrating my wife's Birthday with our family who were in from out of town.
Our waiter was missing in action for a good part of our dinner, and the pasta dishes were extremely salty and overly garlic laden. The crab cakes were undercooked on the inside, but we waited so long for our waiter to come back we had to share the other dishes.
We will likely give them one more chance, as this was our first bad experience.
