About Carmine's - 91st Street - NYC
Carmine's simple and very popular concept is to serve every meal in the style of an Italian American wedding feast - which means large portions of home-style antipasti, pastas, seafood and meat entrees served on large platters designed for sharing. An entree here could easily feed three to four average eaters. Located in a sprawling, former grand ballroom on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, this is the original Carmines. Designed by Peter Niemitz, the interiors evoke the images of the quintessential New York restaurant. With elements and details from the 1920s to the 1940s, the restaurant has the look and feel of a place that has been around for much longer than it's 1990 opening. If you are in the market for freshly prepared family style Italian food that is served in huge portions at reasonable prices, this is the place for you.

Unchanged for 15+ years now. Huge portions of richly flavored Italian American food that are designed for big groups. Service is prompt and courteous. Best to come with 6 or more hungry people.
A major miss on the wine service last night, our bottle of red wine was served room temperature and poured into juice glasses. For $70 a bottle, this is unacceptable. The wine list is terrible, full of overpriced wines that are of suspect quality. If I ever return, I will drink the fine tap water instead.

Amazing atmosphere and incredible tasting food. Me and my wife traveled to the restaurant from Bellerose ,trust me its worth the drive and traffic.
The staff is outstanding ,they take care of all your needs .The food is well cooked and seasoned .

The food is always good but the serving size is ridiculous. If you have 4-6 people this is the perfect place. If you have 2 people it's a waste of money . I understand family style but a party of 2 should not get (and pay for) a meal for six. Pricing and serving sizes should be adjusted for small parties.

The food and service is very good as always. We ordered the 4 pasta special on Sun and I wish the waitress would have indicated it was very LARGE (2 adults & 2 kids) and we would be taking home a lot of it. If we would have known this we would have order a normal pasta dish. It turns out, we barely touch the pasta dish because of the other dishes we ordered.

You can't find a better place than this. The food is amazing and the ambient is like old fashion Italian "cantina". Reservations is not only suggested but a must as it's very busy and waiting times can be longer than 60 minutes.

I was appalled by the unsavory staff. The female manager was the only respectful, polite & educated person I encountered. I was unable to call ahead so I showed up early to my appointment to notify them that my party changed. I had 4 more guest. I was told I have an extra wait time (which was fine) but I would be seated by 9 PM that was actually 10:30 ( I waited 2.5 hrs) when I went to ask a question to the hostess Paula she's so dense she couldn't give me an answer. She was also nasty unprofessional and the scary part was that Security is pretty much guarding that area so I suppose things had previously escalated to dangerous situations. I went over her head and spoke with a manager who was a competent person I was seated with in minutes. She apologized and comped me an appetizer and a desert. This girl did not know how to do her job she was rude and she ruined my birthday dinner I always liked their food and its a family style restaurant so I wanted to go with all my family but I shouldn't be disrespected or treated nasty I would never ever go to that location again. Worst of all is overhearing the employees complain about their job over the guest that is so wrong because I'm Hispanic and I understood everything they were saying. The food taste, quantity and quality is still very good. But the restaurant has definitely fallen off.

My boyfriend and I came on Sunday to celebrate his birthday, the food was great and the atmosphere was beautiful but I asked the hostess to get them to say happy birthday (because I could not find my waitress) and she never relayed the message to the staff.

I specifically requested a good server and I ended up with the opposite. Manny recommended a horrible dry red wine that clearly didn't pair up with our food (penne alla vodka, lasagna, mixed green salad with roasted veggies and chicken parm). A $75 bottle was easily added on to our bill and not once did he offer the birthday lady (my mom) if she wanted to change for a different one because she told him she didn't like it when he asked her how the wine tasted. Why the hell do you ask and get a negative response and don't offer to change the wine!?
When the salad arrived, we were missing two plates to serve ourselves(out of a party of 7). Not once did he come around to make sure we were okay. I had to ask a busser for plates. Our water pitcher was never refilled. When the entrées arrived he didn't ask us once if we were doing well! Manny! I definitely don't want you as my server next time! We only saw you when you took our order, served our wine and when you came to drop off the check. I will tell people about you. You didn't deserve the 20% tip but I still gave you that bc i know the hospitality industry. If I have you next time and I receive the same awful service don't expect a tip from me again!

The food is wonderful, the service was excellent. Only complaint I have is that when I made the reservation I told them of my daughter's birthday and it was not on the reservation when we were there. My husband had to tell the waiter (who was not aware) about it. He then brought out the staff to sing to her

Great food, great for large groups and special occasions. Best to make a reservation which we did and they were right on time. Gluten free pasta was spectacular. Loud with lots of people celebrating special occasions. Great for a birthday!

Absolutely terrible service. Got conned into buying the most expensive thing on the menu even though he knew we wouldn't like it he failed to tell us the ingredients. He was absolutely rude, the food was terrible and way overpriced. Am telling everyone I know to not dine here and to stay away at all costs. Worst dining experience of my life, especially when the waiter has an attitude with you.

Food quality is high, portions are huge. A bit of a surprise on the check, as some suggestions were not priced and mostly poor service/kitchen timing with half of the table done while the other half waits for their dish. It makes the whole meal a bit sad while you usually come to a "family" restaurant to eat with your family (I mean, at the same time...)

Food is great - and huge portions, of which you are made aware before ordering. Service is friendly and helpful- makes you feel at home. As a former UWS, I wanted to show my tourist cousins visiting from Europe a residential, normal(?) nyc neighborhood. They loved the entire experience.

The food was very good. I thought the portions were way to small for the price they charge. We had Veal Parmesan ($37.95) and we were served (2) pieces of Veal. The shrimp Parmesan (38.95) for 10 shrimp was not worth it, sausage (4) pieces for $16.95. It was a great place for families to get together. Not sure if I would go again anytime soon.

A portion of my party was running late and they would not seat us until the full party was there. Even though I arrived for my 7:00 reservation at about 7:20 (called to inform traffic issues due to weather), my reservation was forfeited and my party was not seated until 8:45. Once we were seated, it took another 30-40 minutes to receive our appetizer, which was one order of wings and one order of garlic bread. At about 10:00/10:15, the main course arrived in a rushed manner. We were told the kitchen was backed up and that our dessert was on the house. No manager ever came to us to apologize for any inconveniences. Even with the free dessert, we had an almost $400.00 bill including a generous tip. We also missed a show we had scheduled for 10:00 where our tickets were pre-paid so I also had to take that loss. The food was great but the overall experience was heartbreaking!

We have eaten at this Carmine's many times. This was our worst experience to date. We sat outside and did not receive service for 15 minutes while others around us were served and provided drinks and bread. Once we ordered, it took 35 minutes to receive our meals (which is not long except that other around us ordered AFTER us and received their food BEFORE us). We had tickets for a concert and I told the server that we needed to cancel our order if we did not get our food in the next few minutes and she had the manager bring us our food within 5 minutes. The food was good but we did not get to fully enjoy it and had it packed to take home. Very disappointing..
