Benihana - Wheeling Ratings and Reviews
My daughter's favorite birthday dinner spot and the food was great and good time for our whole family. Still wish they had better ventilation but better than in the past. Fun to sit at grill and have chef flame and chop and flip the food for everyone. Always too much food but it was all tasty and nice ice cream treat for my daughter. Our waiter even took a group photo and had a copy for us before we left. Nice touch.
Overly smoky grill blew smoke at 2 out of 5 of our guests like we were at a bonfire. Chef did 2 standards, the onion volcano which fell apart within seconds and the shrimp tail flip into his pocket which couldn’t seem to actually land in his pocket but all over the grill instead. Ordered same drink twice and the second one turned out completely different than the first. The first one was delicious, the second was not. Negligible alcohol, not detectable at all. Not worth the price. Two of our party had upset stomachs the following day. Overall, not going back.
We took our 6 year old son to Benihana to try something fun and different and he really enjoyed it. It's fun to watch the food being made and the food was very good. It's very heavy on the oil and butter, but for a special occasion or once in a while, it's worth it for a different experience.
In 2017 we visited this location 4 times. Very rude staff. They won't get water when requested. When reported to Manager she was even worst. Manager is not even willing to talk with the customers on their mistakes. She said "let me get back" and disappears. And appears back to offer a $7 dessert on my $250 bill. LOL. I would not recommend nor go to this location for at least next few years. Thanks.
They had no #bussiness at all.The dishes was dirty too on the table. An they had a Mexican man cooking ,what happened to Japanese cook. Over all go down town Chicag0 that’s better. Miles ahead a place called Wildlife was packed full of people. Benihana was empty
The entertainment side of the meal was very captive. The food was the FRESHEST iv'e had. The selection was quite good. The only things I would say about the prices was that of course, you are paying a higher price on the food to cover the entertainment you are getting. If you wear glasses, bring some wet-naps with you since you are sitting right next to the grill as they are cooking the food!
way too cramped, my plate was in front of the person to my right. those tables should only be used for 8 IF they are all the same group. service was way too slow and never got the sushi appetizer that we ordered. the service and quality at this location has gone way down hill and is never consistent.
Best good we have had at Benihana. The only issue was that the Crispy Spicy Tuna appetizer has been changes and it is really not very good anymore. This used to be my favorite thing on the menu. It is likely that we will go to Benihana less know that our favorite item is no longer good.
Overall, a very good eating experience with very well made food. The chef did miss every trick that he tried to do, and he did not talk communicate with any of us besides asking about our orders and rarity of our steak which are my only gripes but did take away from the experience.
There was no problem as far as the food. It was great!!! However, one of the main reasons we dine at Benihana with small children is because of the entertainment value. The cook/server we had was not interactive and didn't do the tricks that we have come to expect when dining there. The children were very disappointed as were the adults.
I would expect that when I spend ~$120 for dinner for two people, I shouldn't have to keep my winter jacket on. It was freezing in the place from the moment we walked in. Instead of being told that it will be "Drafty" for a little while, I would have appreciated the front desk clerk to tell me that the heating system in this restaurant is flawed and doesn't work when the chefs are cooking. I would have went somewhere else.
I always make the drive out to wheeling. The food and service is phenomenal. I feel like it’s my own cheers - everyone knows me and knows what I like including allergies and it’s just an awesome environment to be in and to bring my friends and family too. I visit at least 3-4 times a month if not more.
This was our second time at this restaurant and the ambiance was just not there this time. The chef made little conversation with the table guests and seemed to be "just doing the bare minimum" while cooking. The food was plated at different times so one could not enjoy an entire meal, but in stages. The prices are high for what is included and extras add up quickly.
Our bill for 2 adults and 1 child was $130.00 + Tip !!! (drinks included)
If I had to compare this restaurant to another similar one in Vernon Hills, I would recommend Vernon Hills.
First our reservation could not be found. Then we were seated with 4 other adults we did not know, and with 8 adults trying to fit in an area that might fit 6 comfortable, I was in the isle near the cook and it was very hot. We noticed some of the grills had just 2 people, we still can not understand why were crowded in when there was plenty of room.None of the food had any seasoning. Had to ask 4 time if I could have some soy sauce just to try and flavor the bland taste. Shrimp was over cooked and the steak had a large streak of grizzle that made it impossible to eat. Others may have a better experience, all /I can say is good luck. Always look at the windows and floor when entering a restaurant, if they are dirty, leave immediately. Wish we had. Worst $80 I have ever spent for two people. Maybe the service was due to us using Open table for our reservation??
We have been to Benihana many times, mostly this (Wheeling) and the Schaumburg locations. In the past, this location has had better chefs and comparable food to Schaumburg, but not this night.
The menu is creative and somewhat varied within a Hibachi style. We didn't try the sushi.
My wife enjoyed one of their White Peach Saki Sangria's, and I a glass of pinot grigio. The sangria was tasty, but the wine, at $9.00 / glass, tasted like it came from a box. NOT recommended!
The scallops were nicely done, and a tasty meal. The salmon was also well prepared, and very good with shiitake mushrooms and asparagus. The tartar sauce which came with it was mediocre, but passable.
The disappointment came from the chef, Jose. He was just barely friendly, and only did a little of his show in the beginning of his time with us. After flipping the spatula a few times and making a very basic volcano of onions, he got down to simply cooking the meal. No extra flair, no eye contact with the diners, and most surprising, no response to our encouragement! We've been to Japanese steak houses enough to know what to expect, and how to have fun with the chefs. He also continually looked around the room as if he were watching for someone to enter. Not just watching the door, but everywhere EXCEPT at our table, and I was trying to make eye contact and have some fun. He was by far the least engaging chef, even of those who shared they were new, in my memory. It's also good to note that our other 6 table mates were pretty flat and non-engaging, but a good chef will bring people together - I've seen it happen!
Each table pairing had two chefs working at the same time, which meant that even if one wanted to have fun, he couldn't because of the crowded conditions. Management, PLEASE set up one table at each pair and rotate around the room!!!
Overall, for a $80+ meal, the food was OK, the service was decent, but chef sorely lacking. MANY other good places to go for the same or even less money.
Father-in-law was in town from Pennsylvania for his birthday. Wanted to take him somewhere special, and he never went to a hibachi before so thought Benihana would be a great idea. We hyped up how entertaining it is with spinning eggs, throwing shrimp in your mouth, etc. Got none of that except for the onion fire and train. Very disappointing after I mentioned the birthday and we want a good show and they said “Yes, yes”
Excellent chef who cooked everything to perfection. Overall very good experience, but person who took our order had problems getting our coupons done which he finally did accomplish after lengthy delay. Will definitely come back for special occasions as food is delicious.
Our family celebrates many birthdays at Benihana. We went for my 5 y/o granddaughter's birthday but she was a little overwhelmed by the noise and people. The staff, from the waiters to bus persons to the cooks, could not have been nicer about making accommodations for her. Although we didn't have a formal birthday celebration, she had a great time and we all had a great meal. Both she and her younger brother were crazy about the soup!!!!
This was the first time taking my kids to Benihana. They were very excited. However, our waiter could barely speak English so had difficulty taking our order. Then the chef did not interact at all and did not do any of the "performance" aspects that is the key to this whole experience. We could have gone to any other restaurant just to watch someone cook without speaking or interacting with us. Highly disappointing all around!
I was disappointed when I recommended this place to my friends because the chef performs while cooking which is very entertaining. Much to my disappointment nothing like this happened. The chef rubbed two knives together and that was it. He started cooking our meal.
