801 is always great!! Service, quality, variety on the menu make 801 perfect for dates, business and special occasion!
Our waiter was very nice and did a good job. We were disappointed that the restaurant wasn’t on a higher level with a view. We ordered salads, steaks, potato and dessert. The salad had good flavor, but I did not like that when I cut into my egg, it ran all over my salad. It might be “cool” but it ruined it for me. Also, the mix was all large pieces, so it had to be cut for every bite. My spouse ordered a medium rare filet. He thought his was very good. I ordered mine medium “plus”. The filet was charred black on most of the outside on the top, was exactly the same on the inside as the medium rare one and was a little tough to chew. I cut off the char and ate the edges. My spouse ate the rest and commented that his was definitely a better cut. The scalloped potatoes were delicious. The soufflé was very good. I was glad that I had asked to see a dessert menu before ordering the main course, because when I questioned the soufflé, the waiter said it was a 40 minute serve time. All in all, it was still fun to experience a new place.
It was wonderful. First class
We just love the place. Awesome food. 5 star Up scale treatment. Perfect place for a special date night. I would recommend this place 100 percent.
Absolutely fantastic customer service! Our waitress Shannon was one of the best waitresses we have ever experienced. Thank you Shannon!!!
I had honestly dismissed 801 for the longest time for fear that it would be another over-priced, stuffy steak place with mediocre food. I was wrong. Is it expensive? Yes, but you have to know what you're paying for. Yes there are seafood and pork options, but if you're coming here, you better be getting steak. You don't order a burger at a Chinese restaurant, do you? They do have amazing looking entrees that are not beef and on a subsequent visit, I will try them. I think in order to truly appreciate this place, you have to be willing to splurge, otherwise I could see being disappointed. I was going to be just okay with dropping $50 on the ribeye, but I opted for the 30 day aged Wagyu New York Strip. It was $120 and worth every penny. We were celebrating a special occasion and just got bonuses, so yes, we went all out. It's not a place we're going to go to often, but in terms of the best steak ever, this place is it. Beyond that, they had morel mushrooms as a steak topper. Come on! These are the things that you won't find all the time, especially in Iowa. I never thought I'd be able to have Wagyu without ordering it online and grilling it myself. The wine list is extensive as are the offerings from the bar. We ordered the marrow as a starter which also had an intense beefiness, much like the aged steaks. We did also order two small sides for sharing (green beans and lobster mac and cheese). We shouldn't have ordered either since we ended up taking them both home, but they were both amazing. We wanted to have enough room for our steaks! We finished the night with one of the best creme brulees I've ever had and a really nice chocolate espresso tort. Our bill with tip was just a shade over $400. I'm not trying to brag, but I am being honest. I wouldn't try to be cheap at this place. It's a-la-carte, but again, you have to know what you're getting into and you have to be willing to splurge a bit to truly appreciate the type of dining experience you can receive here.
Very happy with the whole experience! Great service and great food..
Best New York strip I have ever had! And the Mac and Cheese is out of this world! I have never had anything quite like it. The sour dough bread and real butter really helped prepare us for the meal. My wife kept commenting about the smile on my face as I kept trying each bite of my meal and seeing such satisfaction reflected in my face. Our waitress was super friendly and really helped our first experience eating there. Definitely looking forward to eating there again for our next special occasion :)
Food good as always.
Expensive however very good quality of food.
Best food ive ever had! Simply AMAZING. Everyone is so professional and nice. I can not get over how good the food was
My favorite place.
We don't know the Des Moines restaurant scene at all, since we moved from Des Moines to Seattle in 1973 and we don't get back to Iowa very often. On Friday night we couldn't get a table at Centro, where we've eaten several times before and have always enjoyed. So I used Open Table to get a last-minute booking at 801, about which we knew nothing. It turned out to be our lucky night. The seating (a booth with a properly set table), the food (we had pan-seared seabass and salmon), the service (black-aproned professionals who don't tell you their names, thank you very much), and the wine (we had a top-tier Australian Shiraz) were just outstanding. Top notch. This is not an inexpensive restaurant, so I can't give it 5 stars for "Value," but we loved it and will be back the next time we're in the Midwest. This is a place to splurge.
Arrived early and headed to the Bar for 3 lovely glasses of Caymus wine. Our son had flown in from Atlanta to treat my husband to his 70th birthday dinner at a special spot.
Time to go to our table and I could not have been more disappointed. I had called twice to confirm that the table would be decorated for his birthday as they have done in the past/ no decorations/ no card/ no personal menu/ a minor thing but it just makes it feel so special/ felt let down.
We are regular customers at Flemings in Des Moines but thought for this special Celebration we would step it up a notch/ did not say anything as I rarely complain/ in the past it has been perfect but someone was not paying attention this time.
Wonderful server and great food.
Felt badly that I left feeling let down.
Nice complimentary dessert!!! Felt special about that.
Thank you! .
I visited with my wife for our 40th anniversary. We happened to be sitting next to another party celebrating their 50th anniversary. The restaurant decorated our table, left a happy anniversary note and gave us a menu with happy anniversary on it. The small things always make a difference. The food and drinks were excellent. Although definitely a very high end restaurant, I would recommend it for special occasions.
Great food, best steak in Des Moines
We had a nice evening at 801 Chop House. Our steaks were cooked to perfection along with garlic mashed potatoes. Andy, our waiter was awesome as he tended to our needs. He recommended the soufflé for dessert and it was excellent! Great atmosphere and food.
The food was awesome as always! Great service. I had the lamb chops outstanding.
Went here for Valentines Day with my girlfriend. This was our second time being here so we kind of knew what we were doing, at least compared to the first time. We started off with appetizers. I got the calamari and she got the Caesar salad. For out entree we both got a 12oz fillet mignon and ordered sides of Mac and cheese and garlic mashed potatoes. Everything was great and our server Debbie was nice. She was very attentive and filled our drinks a lot. Steak is the best we’ve ever had, melted in our mouths! Would highly recommend this place if you’re willing to spend some money. Our bill was around $170. Under average for this place.
Very enjoyable. We had a private corner table for 6 which kept down the noise level. The featured Cabernet was delicious so we shared 3 bottles. Our waiter was personable and knowledgeable regarding the menu. We will be returning soon. Thank you.
This is too expensive for everyday dining but is one of our go to date night venues.
One I can always count on for a business dinner - and appreciate you are open on Mondays for this reason as well. It was amazing as always! See you again soon.
Our server Skip was beyond amazing with perfect timing on every course.
It was perfect as usual!
A little speedy, but no question a top place to have a nice dinner.
Exceptional meal, great wine, great friends!
Delicious food, excellent service. Wonderful night.
We enjoyed our dinner out to celebrate our birthdays and the service was very good, but I have to say the food was very average for the high prices. My entree must have sat too long before serving because it was no longer hot/warm. And the food lacked presentation. Simply a steak on a white plate! No adornments on the plate at all. Everything Ala Carte and extremely expensive. The salad was good and a generous portion though. Overall a good experience - just not great, which is what you expect for the prices!
The key lime dessert was a definite star tonight. Was grinning side to side because of how delighted I was eating it.
Great steaks. The mushroom side was great.
Amazing food and wine! Our waitress, Shannon, was wonderful
A simply amazing experience with a breathtaking bill to match. I’m not a $100 a head kind of diner, but it’s a lovely special occasion choice.
We were traveling to Des Moines for a corporate event and stumbled upon 801 accidently. We started the night with a drink at the bar. Shannon and Drew were so friendly and engaging behind the bar so we decided to eat dinner at a table in the bar area where they could take care of us. And that they did!! My husband’s bone-in prime rib melted in his mouth and the filet I had was one of the best I’ve ever had- and that’s impressive coming from a Texan who eats beef 24/7. The chocolate soufflé ended the night perfectly. The only disappointment was that 801 wasn’t open for lunch the next day! Not an inexpensive place for food but it’s worth every dollar spent and the some. Don’t miss this place!
Brussels sprouts were not done.
Attentive waiter. Prompt service and plate removal. Foods being tasteful and as requested. Definitely an A++ eatery.
Outstanding as always!! Incredible service, fantastic food. One of my favorite places in Des Moines! Love how they decorate for the holidays!
We went on new years, it was very busy, but the staff handled it with ease. Everyone was so nice and helpful every step of the way. The waiter balanced the attentiveness to our needs and respect for privacy expertly. The food was amazing and the ambiance/whole dining experience was first class and wonderful.
Went to 801 Chophouse with a group of friends for New Years 2017. The service was wonderful and the food was amazing.
Great food and service
