"This restaurant upon opening was wildly overpriced. All of that is gone now and the best sashimi I have ever had, ditto .Katsu-San's touch with umami and mushrooms. The duck was rubbery and chewy though. Katsu-San is ALWAYS on premises (!!!!!!!); the waiter and hostess were A-plus-plus. The bar staff was incompetent, instead of a $70 Savennieres they served us a $220 Coulee de Serrant without ever showing us the bottle and charged us for it; the waiter apologized and fixed the problem. The reserve wine list is poor, both wine lists have no red Burgundies. Everything else was great and I will go again. But I'll bring my own wine."

"went about 6:30 on a Friday night and it was very quiet (empty) which we loved. We were fearful it would be too costly but there were many choices on the menu at all different price points so were very pleased. Everything was beautifully presented! The service couldn't have been better!! Our water glasses were constantly refilled immediately. Don't forget to eat dessert - Red Velvet cake was yummy."

"They need to improve on desserts. I would expect to have some Japanese sweets, like Mochi, or even green tea ice cream. Food was overpriced and not at all the quality I would expect from a restaurant located in Los Gatos. We ordered the seafood cerviche and the waitress mentioned that the corn nuts were homemade. If they are going to say something is homemade, it better be good. Those corn nuts were stale (soggy). The Spicy Salmon Avocado roll was good, but not worth the $15 for only 6 pieces. We also ordered the filet mignon ($40) which was good. No complaints there. The best thing about the whole experience was the $10 bottomless champagne. (you have to ask for it, since it is not on the menu). Overall, I will not be going back."

"My wife and I went in early to beat the rush and had no expectations. The greeting was friendly and ambience is upbeat if not a little disco looking. The music is soft ambient/house music and pleasant. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The food was very good - interesting twists on sushi and Japanese fare. My only nitpick is that it is on the expensive side even for Los Gatos - this may keep it off our regular visit list. Other than that, I recommend this restaurant."

"Seemed like we were on a "funniest bloopers show." Started out with a 40 minute wait for our table even though our reservation was made a week out. Virtually out of all Sake...turned out being, let me see what we have left, not what do you have." Then it went on to some dishes came out and some that the "ticket lost" and the kitchen didn't prepare them.
By the end, we didn't even get a thanks for coming!"

"The food is very good and much of it quite unique. It is not a classic Japanese restaurant (except for the sashimi), although many of the dishes are based on the best Japanese ingredients. The sake list is good - one of the best in the Bay Area. However, it is expensive, so this is a special occasion only restaurant."

"We went to katsu to have dinner with friends. The chef came to our table and treated us like we owned the place. I felt very special, then realized that the chef also gave the same great service to the other tables. He recommended superb specialties and amazing sushi and sashimi. The grilled fish (Halibut) was amazing. We also had black cod which was so delicious. And finally we had lobster tempura which was a little expensive at 50 dollars, but the chef told me that it was a 1.5 lb pound lobster which made sense. I would order it all again. For drinks we had the 30 dollar sake tasting which was great and almost too much sake. We really enjoyed our evening."

"I went with my two daughters and was not terribly famished, yet the bill was $125 not including tip!! No drinks. I could have gone to any of my favorite sushi bars and ate for $50 max and walked out full and satisfied. Presentation and quantity ..thin and skimpy. The only satisfying item we ordered was the Katsu pork dish. Food seemed to evaporate between kitchen and table. Maybe this place is best for late hour drinks with some pricey sushi accompaniments. Felt like I donated and got a token bite to eat. We were going to try to get into La Fondue for chocolate fondue dessert (that tells you how not full we were). Not recommended for the hungry or the sort of hungry. Great for sushi dieters."

"It seemed like a want to be cool place, and its not all that. Not much variety on the menu. The waiter disappeared for awhile and we had to go to the bar to get our own drinks. Paid alot of money but it wasn't worth it. We wont go back."

"The food was decent. We had some of their specialty rolls, sushi and sashimi, and a great bottle of sake. The main issue I have with Katsu is the pricing. I can get similar quality food down the street in Los Gatos at two other places, at about half the price. They are marketing themselves as high end Japanese, but unless the food becomes really exceptional, I don't think this is going to work. I was not too fond of the interior of the place, all black, glass and mirrors. Combined with the 2/3 empty tables, it made for a somewhat strange experience. The restaurant was about 1/3 full on a Friday night, while every other place in Los Gatos is packed at that time. I really hope they succeed, since we need more variety in Los Gatos."

"Pricey... yes but worth it! Been waiting for a great Japanese restaurant in the Bay Area and this is it. Food quality and service was excellent. Hamachi w/ jalapeño was so fresh it just melted in my mouth. Chef Katsu even introduced himself at our table to ensure the food was to our liking. Definitely will be a repeat customer."

"Had been curious to try Katsu since it opened up in the neighborhood. While we found the staff to be friendly, there is definitely a lack of polish (our bar order was filled incorrectly, our appetizers were brought out without dipping sauces which came out 10 minutes later AFTER we asked after them, the busboy called me "sweetie" uh, what now?) Te sushi was fresh and good quality and the tempura prawns were tasty but the corn fritters were bland and dry. The apps and deserts were not memorable. The atmosphere feels cavernou, more like a dance club than an upscale restaurant. A bit out of place in Los gatos. Basically, it's fine. I didn't hate it, However, for $200 (before wine) I would have expected to be a bit more impressed."

"The food is out of this world and delicious, foodies would really enjoy it! The service was ok, but doesn't match the food or pricing. The only two things I didn't care for: having to provide my credit card to make a reservation and the restaurant automatically adding a 20% gratuity onto our bill. I did not feel our service was worth 20%, we were a party of 5 and when our first course came out 4 out of the 5 was delivered and 15 mins later the last one came out. When it came to our final course they rushed it to get us out."

"What a fantastic treat here in Los Gatos. This town is not really known for highest end food - there are a few places, but Katsu brings itself into the "must-take-guests-out" realm. We were quite impressed! Fantastic inventive menu; nice serving size so you can try many dishes."

"Although the service was great, I was a bit put off that for a party of six they automatically added 20%. I realize that this has become typical in many places but I think it's too forcing. Our orders to include drinks were simple for which I would expect decent service anyway. Prices boarder on too much but I have to say it was some of the best sushi I have had in sometime. With that said I like the atmosphere and presentation and would consider going back again for dinner or just to sit at the bar."

"We love the newest addition to the downtown Los Gatos restaurant scene! The fusion Asian food is delicious, the sakes and wine list are great, the service is excellent! I find myself craving the HK47 appetizers at least once a week. Love!"

"Wanted to check out the restaurant based on the Facebook postings I have seen. Vegas type atmosphere. Oddly enough when our party of 6 arrived, there wasn't enough menus for us at the time so we had to wait a half an hour to order. However, we were in no hurry and enjoyed each other's company and the atmosphere with our drinks. When menus were available, we did order and the group enjoyed everything. We ordered a variety of sushi as well as ceviche tacos and NY steak., all declious."

"We had an amazing time at Katsu. Went on a thurs night which for dt lg is more sleepy especially for the higher end. That ended up working in our favor as Chef Katsu gave us a ton of attention and information. We ordered right off the specials of the night menu. Fabulous. Chef Katsu is one of the most humble and gracious Chefs we probably have ever met. Our waiter Chris was very knowledagble and Jason at the bar was a true bartender. I would save this place for a night you want to splurge on real high standards of food quality with the WOW factor.
Cheers"

"This was one of the most disappointing dinner. The food was expensive but the taste was just so so. For almost $30, we got six scallops the size of a dime drenched in red spicy sauce. A 7oz black cod was $38. The lone piece of fish was served on a little plate with no adornment. It looked so sad. Both dishes were served with no rice or side vegetables. We also ordered a 21 oz steak for $70 and for that the dish did come with some rice and veggies. The steak was so so - almost no taste. The best thing was the chef's special sashimi platter since the fish was very fresh. We also ordered some overpriced mediocre appetizers. On top of a bad and very expensive dinner, the waitress totally bungled the Bday surprise for our sons."

"The wait staff was very helpful and quite knowledgeable. Their help with the saki selection was right on and they were willing to give tastes so that we could decide on the one that suited us. The food is of top quality and very tasty. The restaurant is beautiful. My only negative is that I wish they had round tables which make conversation with a group easier."

"We were excited to have this cool restaurant in town; it was supposed to have great food quality, new and modern ambiance. The rumor was when it opened that it was very pricey, but I thought no biggie, if it's great, it's worth it. This was my third time at the restaurant and every time there was something that was not quite right; not for a restaurant of this caliber. I have to say that the food was always good. But at one occasion they were out of a certain wine, their vodka martini was terrible, on two occasions they were out of their special (volcano scallops) when it was only 8 pm and the restaurant was half full; also they placed a Facebook promotion that wasn't clear when it was happening.."

"Service was relatively slow, and several dishes were "sold out" (including corn fritters- really, who runs out of corn?). I ordered their vegetarian sushi sampler - which is $11 on their online menu. The server had no idea what that dish was and I had to show him the menu. I ended up getting a vegetarian sushi roll (no varieties or anything) and charged $17 (the seafood sushi sampler rate). I liked their mushroom salad, their tofu and tomato "sashimi", and their presentation. Their veggie taco was boring and not worth it. The meat eaters at the table were not super impressed either. They liked some dishes (like the tempura lobster), but thought most other dishes were just average, and were disappointed that several dishes were sold out."

"On my fourth visit, I brought my daughter who lives in San Francisco, who thinks the best sashimi stays in the city. We shared the premium sashimi platter, and she said it was the best she has had. All the fish is so fresh. We also shared the sea weed salad and it was delicious. She balked at paying $50.00 for the lobster tempura, but its my favorite. I noticed that since my last visit, they have changed the menu, and I think it's to appeal to a wider clientele. I love this place, but on Tuesday evening at 7:30, there were only four tables filled, so I hope it sticks around. Hopefully, the weekends are busier."

"We had a reservation at 8:00 pm and arrived at 8:45 but were assured that the kitchen is open until 11:00 pm. We were asked to wait at the bar while one of the 4-5 empty tables is set up. After a short wait, the hostess informed us that they could not offer us a table even at the periphery of the room because there was a Donovan after party starting at 10 pm, which we were invited guests to. If we wanted to eat, we would need to do so standing at the bar. Standing? Woaw! It's not as if we were under-dressed either. I was wearing a Gucci leather jacket, dress shirt, slacks. My lady friend had a Chanel leather jacket on and carried an LV purse. We would not be out of place at any upscale party... What a way to treat a customer!"

"The food was outstanding - we had lots of sashami, it was all outstanding. We had kobe beef too, was great as well. Well worth the price. The ambinace is very modern and energetic, it seems a little out of place in los gatos. The place was very noisy on a Friday eve and the decor does not help. Oddly, the service is not up to the food, quite behind in fact. The wine list has more expensive choices than affordable choices. That could be ok given the food, but with the current service, its a disconnect IMO. We will be back, the food is great and worth it. Eventually, this place will find what it wants to be and will be great."

"After hearing many reviews from friends and others, we decided to try out this new Japanese influenced Restaraunt. We had reservation but were hoping to sit at the bar. You have to play I safe. Bar was full but Josh was able to take our drink orders and craft us both something truly refreshing. We waited for a few and were sat by the wonderful hostess, I think Tara? Anyway she was extremely friendly, helpful, and a nice person to be in a position to both greet and say goodbye to guests. Our server Mark was extremely attentive, helpful, funny and knowledgable about the menu. What we ate. Hamachi jalapeño. 5 stars Salmon sashimi. 5 stars Albacore sushi. 5 stars black cod 10 stars. Kagoshima a-5. 10 stars. Thanks chef Katsu!!!!"
