"Great spot with very fresh seafood and riffs on some maritime classic guilty pleasure food (Halifax donairs). Cape Breton snow crab served with white vinegar as a dipping sauce shows fresh shellfish and a simple condiment are a great match that allows the taste of the food to come through. Short but well chosen wine list."

"Really disappointed with our experience. We were only able to get a late reservation (9:15) which is understandable for a Saturday night. Sat at bar initially for a drink, took us a while to get the attention of any bartender and then when we ordered drinks it took a while for us to get them.

Finally got seated around 9:20. Placed our order and by 9:45 we were still waiting for bread. After being informed that they were out of Lobster Roll special we had to beg our waiter to bring us anything to start, at least bread! The food came out sporadically. Delicious but the flow and inattentiveness of the waiter really ruined the experience. Had requested a candle with dessert via OpenTable, but was ignored. Would not recommend nor return"

"Located on vibey Roncy Street, this place is a definite 'must go' for those who love food, good food. Smallish menu, interesting choices (Duck heart tartare, anyone?), and attentive service made our last night in Toronto a memorable one. I had the best lobster roll EVER - served with half the upper body deep fried to a crisp in a sweet light crust. I am going to be dreaming about that one for a long time...We shared a number of dishes between 3 of us and they were all good. Digby scallops wrapped in bacon were sweet and perfectly rare. The steak was a little chewy but the jus was luxurious and the bone marrow undercooked to wobbly perfection. The east coast snow crab was sweet and the accompanying vinegar was a lovely surprise. Go there!"

"Really loud music and so-so service couldn't ruin a great meal. Inventive, delicious and fresh tasting, every dish was excellent. with the exception of the Lobster roll which was a bit bland.The Donairs... Yum!"

"the food was good but a bit odd as really only share plates so it becomes a build your own
perhaps a side of seasonal veg done very well would enhance the overabundance of protein on the menu - like asparagus for this season
and $50 for a so-so sicilian wine seems a bit much but perhaps that is expected now...."

"The appetizers and main courses are pretty good. Nothing very exciting, but some moderately interesting dishes. In my opinion the crab dip with hot Triscuits is a waste of good crab, but the other dishes my group of 6 ordered were decent. I found the desserts far too sweet and completely uninteresting. And unfortunately the noise level is unbearable, exacerbated by dreadful music."

"I was not pleased with Hopgood Foodliner's service on Friday night. I had dinner with a group of 6 and we were seated 15 mins after our reservation at 8pm. Service through dinner was ok. Near the end, when someone came to collect our cutlery and plates, a knife was dropped onto me. The handle of the knife hit my collar bone and then the knife fell onto my lap. I understand accidents do happen, but the least the server can do was to bring me napkins to clean the stain on my shirt and to provide me with a sincere apology. All the server said was "you're ok right?". Truly unacceptable. I will not be returning to the restaurants and it will not be recommended to others."

"Rarely have I experienced such a thoroughly pleasant meal. The food was interesting, tasty, and fresh. The service was out of this works! The servers seemed to work as a team... Or glasses were always full; we never lacked a thing; no empty dish lingered too long. For any occasion, I would highly recommend Hop goods Food liner."

"4 days later, I'm still thinking how much I miss that meal, and the evening in general. My fiance and I were celebrating her bday 2 days early, and started things off with the oysters. Don't need the horseradish but dab a little on anyway because it's great. We were seated immediately. I've found at some places, even with a reso, you might be waiting for a few minutes. We were seated, and had our bottle of red chosen before 10 minutes went by - and that included a quick taste first. We shared the tuna AMAZING, steaktails, bacon scallops DELISH! By now we were done but forgot Donairs were still coming. Glad they were because they were so good we destroyed them. Desert - the chocolate bar thing!!! Can't wait to go back!"

"I had been looking for Halifax-style donairs in Ontario since leaving Nova Scotia in 1992. Finally, Foodliner has satisfied that hunger. The sauce is slightly spicier than a typical pizza-corner KOD donair, which actually suits me better. The flavour is exactly what I was craving. That said, the presentation (two small open pitas) and price make this an "evening out" dish rather than the traditional late-night post-palace/dome food that it often was for me in Halifax. For the latter the fuzz box on the Danforth more closely approximates my high-school experience.

I always bring fellow expat Haligonians and anyone wanting to try the flavour of a Halifax donair to Hopgood's Foodliner."

"After great reviews, a group of us decided that this was the place to celebrate our friends' 50th. A warm welcome when we arrived and then an indifferent greeting from our server. We chose to overlook the first instance but, after waiting 20 mins for our drinks order (a bottle of wine) with no acknowledgement from our waitress, we started to wonder. White wine plunked on the table for us to serve ourselves with no chilling bucket. We had to flag her down for water, cutlery, etc. We were polite and not rowdy but she was definitely avoiding us. Luckily, the food was amazing. We dine out a lot as a group and this was the first time we all agreed on a 10% tip. Instead of asking us what she could have done better she scowled at us."

"We had a late dinner on a saturday night, but the chef was not too tired to turn out three amazing plates. The bacon wrapped scallops were unbelievable and the barely cooked tuna was a surprising burst of flavours. We finished with a shared plate of donairs which reminded us of university, but much better of course than ever before. The dishes were all creative, perfectly executed and very satisfying. It served as a romantic date spot, alive with chatter, good tunes and nice service. We will definitely be coming back!"

"Came to your restaurant with my boyfriend on a Monday night, and couldn't have had a better experience. Service was perfect, never feeling rushed, over-served, or ignored. Everything we ate was amazing, but the albacore tuna dish was especially out of this world.

"Loved the simple comfort food like molassis bread & butter and the maritime flavour of breaded and fried clams. The highlight was the seared Ahi tuna with hickory-smoke infused crunchy breadcrumbs on a bed of almond puree. Crunchy toffee was a delight for desert - salty, buttery, caramel, chocolate flavours with a creamy, toffee, and crunchy texture. Wow."

"Well prepared, delicious maritime inspired dishes served in a vibrant restaurant environment. The food was great, lots of choices that were perfect for sharing so we could try a greater variety of dishes. Good service and a nice wine list for a smallish restaurant . We will return and look forward to the ever changing menu! Please do not remove the caramel bar from the dessert menu!"

"When we arrived the hostess could not find our name on the reservation list. Another employee came over and after looking in the computer for a couple of minutes, she admitted they had given our table away to another couple that had just arrived, assuming that they were our party of two. Not a good first impression. She did however find a table for us at the back of the restaurant, so was able to avoid what could have been a disastrous evening. Despite being stuck in the back of the restaurant, the food was very good and we had an enjoyable birthday celebration."

music level increased to the point of not being able to hear our

"My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Hopgood's last Saturday evening. The service was terrific and for the most part the food was even better. The oysters were good but the sweet breads were to die for. Absolutely fantastic. Only disappointment was the Hot Crab Dip with Triscuits. The dip itself was okay but for all the homeyness that a Triscuit offers, a good french stick would have been better."

"A trio of appetizers between four of us, with a succulent smoked mackerel the standout, and a "main" each, the four of us all chose something different, made for a wonderful evening of tastes. A friendly waitress prepared to chat about every dish on the menu but who forgot to bring a glass of wine in reasonable time - and an incessant drum and bass beat from the speaker perched above our table. I'm not sure I love the current resto ambiance pervasive around the city but i applaud the food being created."

"We have been to Hopgoods 3 times and each has been fantastic. We love the way the men u changes regularly. The cocktail list is superb. We love the laid back service combined with first class cooking. This dinner, our server seemed somewhat impatient with us early in our service, asking us about drinks before we settled into our chairs and had they seen a menu. But things improved."

"Unique menu, a little 'maritime seafood tapas meets carnation milk'. We enjoyed all of our dishes - slightly eclectic, and tending to rich without overdoing it and being too rich. Very attentive and friendly service but not intrusive. Neighbourhood gem and worth bring people from other parts to so they can experience the unique menu and relaxed but cool atmosphere."

"I do not understend why this restaurant was pointed out as one of the new best restaurant in Toronto by one of the magazins. We were waiting for somebody to take an order about 20 minuts and our main course arrived after 1 hour. Crispy squid was soggy and spicy. It was average food and bad service not worth the price."

"We just celebrated my husband's birthday at Hopgood's with dinner for two. It was oustanding. Food was fantastic (smoked sweetbreads, smoked mackeral, and donairs were sooo good!). The service was, as always, stellar. Amazing. Highly, highly, highly recommended.b"

"nice spot, great room and good attentive service. all in our party were happy with their entrees and desserts but not so impressed by the appetizers. I recommend the scallops! the mood is upbeat but the music really did get way too loud - it is a restaurant in the back room, not a bar, and we were yelling at each other and couldn't hear anyone across the table - only those seated shoulder to shoulder. I wouldn't go back unless with only one other person - conversation was impossible."

"First time at Hopgoods with my wife on a Thursday night. The food was excellent, the portion sizes were reasonable and the service was quite attentive. Two beefs; the wine list is disappointing and needs to significantly expanded with improved quality. The other is minor relating to the molasses bread "appetizer" - effectively one slice of bread cut up into 4 pieces for $2 which I found annoying. I will definitely going back."

"While the restaurant came highly recommended, it did not live up to its billing.The portions were small and lacked flavor. Paying $2 for a few pieces of bread is annoying. Service was fine but perhaps overly informal. We should be treated as guests not friends.The wine was overpriced with only one white wine offering at less than $50 a bottle.Surely they can find offerings in the $35-$45 range.

Not worth a repeat visit."
