You could almost hear the foodies snickering when word got out that CYPRESS Owner Rick Delamain was bringing back old-school restaurant flourishes that had gone out of style along with leg warmers and shoulder pads. Well, guess what: The "80's are back! And CYPRESS is packing em' in to its downtown Walnut Creek location with a combination of Modern French Fare, and yes, some retro glamour pizzazz! "It's just a little bit of a WOW factor," Rick Delamain, who worked at the popular Le Virage in Walnut Creek until it closed in 1996. "These days good service is hard to find anywhere let alone in the F&B business. Cypress is THE exception! Our hostess was smiling, friendly and attentive, and Jose our waiter was OUTSTANDING! The food was excellent! We had 10 people and everyone loved their dish. We had the Ceasar salad, Salmon, NY Steak (cooked to perfection at the table by Jose), Grilled Ahi and the delicious Banana Foster cooked at the table to finish the meal was out of this world! The best part of the meal? A must have side of Dungeness Crab Mashed Potatoes! Make your reservation now!"

"Severs seemed really young, which is okay, if they're trained right. Ours seemed to not know menu very well, then a runner slopped mussel sauce all over the table, didn't seem very phased by it, must happen a lot. Didn't get on us but close. Vests were a mess which is unacceptable if restaurants provides, they need to keep that and extra shirts on hand and inspect. It's a bright restaurant and that was very unappetizing. They were very accommodating. Chef/owner was fawning over table next to us but did not seem to notice anyone else including us. We'll possibly try them again, but no hurry due to issues. Food was really good."

"We were tired of the same old Walnut Creek scene and wanted to try something new.
What a surprise to find a restaurant with fantastic service and some special fare. We couldn't pick wrong. Not a bad dish appeared on our table (and between our part of four there was a lot of food on that table). Great appetizers and side dishes, NY steak cooked table side, all served with perfect timing and spacing.

"The walls and floor are uncovered concrete. It's crowded(popular!) but the need for the waiter to shout shows it needs big time accoustic help. Hang drapes on the walls, flags from the ceilings. You can't hear each other!
The MENU, SERVICE, and FOOD was teffific!"

"The meal sizes are more American than French, the food more California than anything. Very tasty. The big difference is the table side prep of the various offerings. You just don't get that at many restaurants. Piano was a nice touch, windows that open up to the street are nice too. +$200 for party of four."

"Great service, great atmosphere... beautiful restaurant. The food was presented very nice, but tasted just ok. We ordered the crab cakes which were dry. The steak tartar was fresh and looked great, but tasted bland. Same goes with the main dishes... looked great, tasted decent, but not outstanding. Our waiter was fantastic, as one everyone else that worked there."

"We enjoyed our dinner at Cypress. Having just returned from two weeks in France, we needed another "fix" of French food and Cypress did not disappoint. It is truly food fit for a Francophile. The room is a bit noisy and the service is good although at times a bit too attentive (we're not in a hurry; it's Saturday night for crying out loud!). This is a great restaurant, though, and I would make a return reservation in a heartbeat."

"Super nice hostess. Accomodating waiter. Table side Caesar salad delicious. Steak tartare amazing. Mac n cheese delicious. Fried Brussels sprouts fantastic. Skip the fried calamari, it was so greasy it was dripping on the table leaving grease stains. Gross. Not a fan of the cocktails, I've had better Moscow mules. Stick with wine. The crab and watermelon salad had potential but too much crab and portion way too large. 2 of our party of 5 arrived late and it was no problem. I am looking forward to trying the salmon Napoleon and Cobian fish. Very chic and stylish little restaurant with piano bar. Thoroughly enjoyed the evening."

"The service was horrible and slow. The waitress didn't take our order until 35 minutes after we sat down and the food also took a while to come out. On top of that, they ran out of desserts and didn't give us another option until I asked for it. The server was unwelcoming and didn't provide us with the attention we needed."

"The food was not good. We had their restaurant week menu. The food was not hot and the mashed potatoes tasted like instant potatoes. For the price, the food was way below average. Also, we asked for a quiet table. We were seated in the room where they had a birthday party and some other "gathering" going on (large tables). So it was not quiet at all. However, there did not seem to be a quiet area in the restaurant anyway. Very disappointing all around especially for the price we paid. The food should have been much better. The server was nice and the dessert was good that was the positive side of our visit. Not sure if we will give them a second chance in the future."

"We decided to try Cypress for Walnut Creek's Restaurant Week. It was a great deal and the food and service were good. But the noise! We won't go back at least on the weekend for that reason. Tile floors don't help; we couldn't talk except by yelling in each other's ears."

"Went for Walnut Creek Restaurant Week 2013. My wife and I both got the starter salad which was supposed to have shaved vegetables in it, but we didn't find any. It was a spring mix with decent dressing. Mains were flat iron in red wine reduction and Cornish hen over risotto. The steak was good; the reduction sauce was amazing. Cornish hen wasn't really seasoned perhaps to let the risotto stand out but it was just too bland for me. The risotto itself was good, but too cheesy for my liking. Creme Brulee for dessert was okay. Dark Chocolate Tart was very tasty and served in an oreo crust which was an awesome touch in an upscale joint. Service was very good to excellent. Food was overall fair to good but expected more..."

"Definitely pretty mediocre given some of the nicer restaurants in Walnut Creek like Prima, Walnut Creek Yacht Club, Lark Creek. Would have no idea that this is a French restaurant based on my meal on Friday night. Definitely did not compare to finer French restaurants I've been to, like Bistro Jeanty, Angele, Bouchon, in Napa. Nothing special. Probably won't come back."

"We went to Cypress Fri. 4/19/13 for Restaurant Week to celebrate my husband's birthday. I requested a quiet table when I made our reservation on Open Table. We had to wait for our table and eventually were seated in the back room with two very lively groups. Jose, our waiter, was understanding, accomodating, and able to move us to the courtyard which was much quieter. The food was delicious. The service attentive on a very busy evening. We would dine again at Cypress, but on a weeknight and I would evaluate the noise level before accepting the table offered."

"I LOVED Cypress. Such a fun vibe. Loved the piano player. The service was WONDERFUL. Our waiter was very polite and helpful. His name started with an "M". Marucio maybe? "Two of us had a good experience on our first visit for a Sunday evening dinner. Some of the Open Table reviews I read before my visit gave me pause, but we had none of the problems others have referenced. We were greeted warmly, seated promptly and served professionally and quickly. Our food arrived at a good pace. We did not feel in the least rushed, nor neglected. Our salads were particularly interesting. My surf and turf combination was tasty. The meat dishes were cooked to the requested level. We will dine here again."

"Cypress has potential to be a great spot, but they need to better manage cook and wait staff. Service was so slow - our waitress seemed competent enough, but just too busy to be attentive or timely with our requests. Plus, the kitchen was so slow that we waited a bit for food and dessert."

"The waiter, food and service was outstanding. there is a large BUT, The resturant was empty with the wxception of another table and 9 of us. Our food was very late in coming. Most of us parked in a 2 hour limit andmade it to the meter with only 3 short min left/ We received a very delicious desert for the birthday Lady and would of orderd coffee and lingered at the resturant but did not have time Barbara Gil and a group pf 9 friends."

"I wish I could give this place a better score. I had lunch here with friends and loved it, so I brought my husband back for dinner. One of us had the Steak Frites and the other the Hangar steak. The Hangar Steak came out lukewarm, so I sent it back. THe owner/chef came over and apologized and returned the plate quickly. I can't put my finger on why I did not like it, it tasted charred and the seasoning was just ok. Also, I ordered a side of asparagus because it did not indicate that the dish came with veggies. When my plate arrived it had asparagus on it and then the waiter brought me a side too. He should have mentioned this when I ordered it initially. I am not sure we will be returning, too many great places to eat in Walnut Creek"

"Went to Cypress for Easter Brunch with my fiance. Had reservations for 11:30 am and they seated us right away. They had obviously brought in an extra table as the one we were at eas an outdoor iron table and chairs with a table cloth over it. Wasnt especially comfortable. Service was great. Waiter did a good job. I didn't get what I had ordered and the waiter was apologetic and they made it right very quickly. The chef needs some lessons in seasoning. The was very average and maybe slightly below average. Might give it one more chance but wouldn't recommend it until I tried the food again as there are many other place in the area with better food. Saw the manager making the rounds to a few tables but he didn't stop at our table ."

"This place should be great...the food is ambitious, the restaurant itself feels like it's going to be a great restaurant.
But, when you have to have 3-4 things sent back or your waiter doesn't know the difference between Sauvignon Blanc and Persecco? Jesus.
Horrible service mostly insofar as they just aren't well trained or intelligent people. And at a nice restaurant, that's what you expect."

"I've been to Cypress for lunch before and LOVED their quiche and house made potato chips so I figured I should try it for dinner with some friends - we were not impressed. The cocktails were so-so; the appetizers were decent but the escargot tasted like it came out of a can and the crab cakes needed a little something more? Not sure what, but I've had much better crab cakes at Havana and Yacht Club. They were out of Sprite; the waiter didn't seem to know what they were out of or what kind of rum they carried - they don't carry Captain Morgan?!?!?! Seriously? And you can't get a margarita?!?!?! WTF?? We finished most of our appetizers and asked for the check."

"Pianist was so loud that we had to request that he tone it down so we could hear each other speak. He did so. Our server was very nice and the restaurant brought out a complimentary dessert for our guest's birthday, a nice touch. The food was mediocre to poor and the

"There is nothing french about the food except the names. Very bland food, much oversold by the waiter. I had the rabbit dish on a bed of pasta that had maybe an ounce of meat and appeared to have 2 different color sauces but neither had a distinct taste. I had to season with salt and pepper for some taste. Similarly, we had a black cod with long grain rice and it was supposed to be spicy but the cod was in small cubed pieces and had no taste and the rice was sticky and not spicy at all."

"Duck seems to be their deal. Appetizers and Salad, both duck were very tasty. Sea Bass, which was highly recommended was just OK. Steak, finished table side was very good according to the Midwesterner that ordered and ate every bit of it. Service was very mediocre at best, a little of the Keystone Cops in terms on managing plates on and off the table, amateurish. White wine blend of Rhone varietals was good and reasonably priced"
