"Billy's Boston Chowder House in Los Gatos is very charming, absolutely feels like you're in Boston. Our server was also charming and personable, but he forgot a few items that we needed to ask for. Once reminded, he was very prompt and attentive. Food was pretty good - the "dressed" lobster roll was wonderful, the New England clam chowder was really good. The lobster mac and cheese looked good, but had very little flavor, either of lobster or of cheese. We'll go back, but will be choosy on what we order next time. Parking is a problem in that part of town, so get there early so you have time to drive around and walk to the restaurant."

"Service was been good but food has only been fair over two visits. Manhattan clam chowder was worst we have ever had. New England clam chowder was better but nothing special. Mussels were good but inadequate/skimpy quantity for one let alone to share. Salad was chopped fresh lettuce on a plate with a tomato hunk and red pepper on the side - nothing in the least special. Oyster Po-boy was disappointing with not enough oysters and weak flavors. The crab salad sandwich was only so-so. Great concept for the restaurant, interesting menu and good location but food at lunch needs work. It is no substitute for the out of business Nick's on Main that was nearby."

"We really enjoy the food and the friendly atmosphere. The lobster bisque is yummy! My sweet potato fries were just right. Billy is terrific and usually stops by each time we visit. It's so nice to be able to make reservation since sometimes it's really busy since it's not that big a place."

"The restaurant is small but not cramped. The oysters were sweet and fresh though with a bit more shell debris then typical. The bisque was rich comfort food. My wife had the lobster roll that was well stuffed with lobster meat. She would gladly ask for that entree again. Our guest had haddock and I had the sand dabs prepared piccata style. Very delicate and the picata sauce was perfect. One order of lobster macaroni and cheese for the table was more than ample for all. Sadly, the lobster traces were sparce and the cheese was noticably close in color and consistancy to nacho sauce. I suspect a mild white cheddar would complement the lobster better (if the lobster was more present). Our server(s) were attentive and friendly. We'll return."

"Went for Mother's Day because my wife loves sand dabs and they were on the menu. What a wonderful surprise! The food was very well prepared. The wait staff was excellent - attentive without being a nuisance. Billy, the owner, came out to check on things and to visit with diners. His gregarious nature is infectious. We had a nice chat. The menu brings New England seafood to California, but also incorporates California fish and flavors. We will he back!"

"If you have not had the real thing you will think Billy's is fine. It lacks authenticity tho. Had the chowder sampler, the chowders needed actual clams in them and the lobster bisque was lumpy but not with lobster. The clams needed to be fried so they were crispy. The chippino had lots of seafood, high praise for offering the choice of lobster or crab, but too much garlic and they burned the toasted bread. Ordered the assorted platter of fish & chips, calamari and clams asked for veggies instead of fries - it came with fries. The lemon drop was the worst and smallest ever, not worth $9. And, the Boston creme pie......well it isn't Boston creme pie. So loud you could not have a conversation. Would not return to Billy's."

"Lobster roll was very good although the roll was not traditional. I will try it with the more traditional hot dog bun next time. The oyster po-boy was excellent, again with non-traditional bread. My guest who had the oyster sandwich really liked the combination of the brioche bread with the oysters. The clam chowder was also excellent. I am anxious to try many other items on the menu. I always like it when there are so many attractive items that it is hard to choose."

"I grew up outside of Boston, and I love seafood. I had lobster bisque, very good; and fried, whole belly, Ipswich clams, excellent. This is the first time in 40 years living on the West Coast that I've found a restaurant that makes fried clams the way they are supposed to be made. For an entree, I had the lobster roll. Billy makes this three ways; I had with mayo on a New England style hot dog roll. This was not quite authentic--the real deal has chopped celery and some seasoning. Lobster is a favorite, so there was no way I would hate it, but this just missed being the real thing. My wife had crab cakes and clam chowder. The former she judged as good, but not special. Better clam chowder can be had but not as close by as Los Gatos."

"We were in Los Gatos and wanted to try something new so we found this place on Open Table (good thing, it's kind of dark on the street outside we never would have seen it otherwise). We were quite happy with our"Sunday gravy" entree, buttered lobster roll, and trio of soups. Most diners online liked the lobster bique best but we preferred the 2 chowders. Lemonade was refreshing, server was totally on top of her game and the chef came out to chat with everyone-was clearly enthusiastic about the food. I liked the vibe and it's a place we would return to."

"The lobster bisque alone would bring me back to Billy's Boston Chowder House - it was outstanding! The cioppino was also excellent with perfectly toasted garlic bread. The chowder, though, was a disappointment - not nearly as tasty as expected for a "chowder house". The lobster roll was also dry - I ordered it buttered but it had very little butter and no other dressing, just nice chunks of lobster. The cocktails (actually mocktails - they don't have a full bar) were also extremely tiny, but at least they didn't charge full price for a half size drink, so you can order two."

"Made the reservation through OpenTable and when we arrived, a couple arriving just ahead of us asked for the window table and were told that it was reserved. The table was for us! We had not asked for any particular seating so this was a fun surprise. It pays to reserve through OpenTable. Food was very good and the service was excellent! Parking is a challenge, but is an overall Los Gatos downtown problem."

"We went to Billy's for our wedding anniversary and ordered the Lobster Fra Diavolo for 2 - GLUTEN FREE! It was wonderful! We love Billys! The food is better than most restaurants in downtown Los Gatos, and Billy's doesn't serve pretention, just excellent food made with good ingredients - and they have an EXTENSIVE GLUTEN FREE MENU - including a dedicated gluten free fryer, which since I have celiac is very important for me. We've eaten at a lot of restaurants worldwide, and we love Billys!"

"Love the crab sandwich, lobster roll and cioppino, even like the innovative drinks. Haven't had anything on the menu that i didn't like. Staff is friendly too.
Things to improve quickly:
- create a greeting system so that when guests come into the restaurant they know that you've seen them. This type of acknowledgement leads to less confusion and frustration. Guests want to know what the wait times are, check in for reservations and possibly order something to go. Waiting at the door for 5-8 minutes before someone makes eye contact with you is tiresome. After 3 visits i can say this is just the norm.

"I chose Billy's Boston Chowder House because they have a long list of gluten-free options and, well, lobster! The food was delicious and the service impeccable. Billy came out to greet us and explain the menu. He returned to say the gluten-free pasta I ordered was cooking and offered us some complimentary chowder while we waited. I had the Manhattan (gluten-free) and my friend had the New England. She enjoyed hers as much as I enjoyed mine.
Even though my lobsta mac and cheese was made with gluten-free linguini instead of macaroni (they did tell me about that when I ordered), it was so good I ate every last bit.
I would definitely recommend Billy's to my friends and can't wait to go back and try some of the other many dishes."

"My family with 2 teenagers had a fun and yummy meal here. It was packed, it's popular

"Perfect date night on Valentines Day! All the ladies dining in received beautiful roses!! Food was amazing and waiter was helpful for our first visit. I only wish I had better communicated I wanted to take my leftovers home but somehow it got cleared away. Other than that my husband and I will be happily returning for our seafood fix! "No question the best lobster roll I've ever had. Plenty of lobster chunks on nice warm bread, flavorful coleslaw, very fresh fries, delish calamari.
Food was excellent but service could improve. Took a long time to get our food."

"Enjoyed Billy's Boston Chowder House very much. Bill came & chatted us up and it was like hanging out with old friends. The seafood was fresh, was perfectly prepared and was delicious. "I feel fortunate for having found this 'gem' of a restaurant in the neighborhood. We had reservations at 5:30 and they were not busy at all when we arrived. I ordered the house salad and the chowder sampler which I enjoyed very much. My friend ordered the Fried Haddock Sandwich with a salad and said it was very good as well. While he was waiting for his sandwich the waiter brought him a complimentary sampler of the three chowders that they offer. The atmosphere was inviting and comfortable and we definately plan return to try other offerings on their menu."
