"We had a fantastic evening at the Tortoise Club. From the moment we enter the doors, we felt welcomed by all. The service was flawless and the food outstanding. We especially enjoyed the tuna tartare and the steak tartare. Loved the whitefish and my guest thought the Lobster Themidor was the best she has ever had.

Can't wait to go back."

"My second visit and possibly even more impressed than the first. The new chicken salad sandwich was so tasty and the fruit salad in Greek yogurt really hit the spot. The service was impeccable. Really an elegant place to have lunch. Can't wait to try dinner soon."

"Third time at Tortoise Club and again very impressed. Although we like the "red room" decor, it can be very loud if a larger group takes a table there, so we tried the regular tables outside the red room, and liked it better--more room, less crowd noise. Food again excellent - standouts this time were the pea soup, the oysters and the sable. Looking forward to our fourth booking."

"I decided to give this place a try when we had a few people in town for work and I'm happy I did. The drinks, oysters, short ribs and service were amazing. I ordered the halibut and it was good, but certainly not worth $45. Desserts (strawberry shortcake, chocolate brownie and toffee cake) didn't disappoint and the few bottles of wine we had were good. All-in-all, a successful and enjoyable work dinner. And it seems like the word is getting out on this place since the dining room was just about full come 7:00 p.m."

"Took our son in law and our daughters to Tortoise Club. They, and my husband had not been yet and all loved it! It is a warm, masculine venue with delicious, beautifully presented food. Portions are perfectly sized. You will not overeat here, but you will also not be hungry. Their signature drink is deliccious."

"I had been before and loved the white fish and burger. This time I ordered the salmon based on our waiters recommendation even though I told him I didn't like cucumbers. It was totally undercooked, just not great salmon and heavy cucumber. My husband ordered the pork chop, which he almost allows orders and said it was the best he has ever had. The planters punch is delicious and fun people watching."

"Really enjoyed out Mother's Day lunch at Torroise Club.
The food was very good. Quail eggs were a nice touch.

The lighting was too low for me - especially for a lunch.
We were in the red room. In the main room the lighting is better but you will not have the same level of privacy.

Definitely will be back!"

"Tortoise Club is classic without being old-fashioned, elegant without being stuffy. I know the trend among so many newer restaurants is to have uncovered wooden tables, lots of small plates for sharing and either shared tables or tables jammed together. It is refreshing to find a vibrant, energetic place place with table cloths, individual meals and a gracious space. And the menu, from top to bottom, is balanced and delicious.

If you want the Rush street restaurant "scene," then this is not the place for you. If you want a well executed, contemporary take on traditional dishes and a old school charm, then this is the place. I am glad I do not live closer or I would frequent the bar perhaps a little too often."

"Lovely space and nice staff, but service and food greatly lacking, especially considering the prices. We waited 45 minutes for food, two of 8 entrees returned for tweaking. Presentation pitiful. Lobster roll came with a few overdone potatoes, just boring bland looking plate, no garnish or color. Omelets were very small and blah served with fries that looked like the bottom of batch, little pieces. Kitchen needs help."

"We spent our first Mother's Day brunch at the Tortoise Club. The food was delicious, the service was on point, and it was an overall success. "We started with the corn fritter appetizer. It was $11 and there were five tiny fritters that were smaller than a 1/2 teaspoon each. They were greasy. Together they did not make the size of one normal fritter. No syrup was served with them rather they were served with a ranch dressing that did not complement the fritters. The rest of the meal was unremarkable but very expensive given the portion and the ingredients. The wait staff was excellent. The ambiance was relaxing. The menu was very limited. No chopped salad. I definately prefer a restaurant with a broader menu and bigger portions.."

"As other reviews have stated, the food was just average; nothing spectacular, especially given the prices. I expected a more given the cost. Tastier food can be had at other restaurants. "The Tortoise Club is a great restaurant all around; food and service of very high quality with the ambience to match. Live music in the bar adds to the vitality of an evening. The people who host and serve there are the kindest group of people I've ever met in the industry. For those gents who like to admire pretty ladies serving them drinks at the bar, the ladies in LBD's and pearls wont disappoint. Dont hesitate on going to the Tortoise Club, it's a great find!"

We had 2 very picky eaters at our table and tthe kitchen was very flexible.
We delivered centerpieces 3 hours early and they were unpacked and placed perfectly when we arrived.

"The restaurant as well as the whole dining experience were just O.K. There's was nothing outstanding about any of it; it wasn't bad, but it just wasn't great... The portions are very small for what you pay, that being said, the food was pretty good... I didn't like that upon our arrival exactly at the reservation time and with restaurant pretty much empty we still had to wait for out table to be set..."

"The food was underwhelming, over priced and not that original and the service was flat and uninspired. If you are going to do old-school steak house in a club atmosphere, the staff needs to turn it up a notch. The dining room was fairly empty on a weekday evening, though the interior is stunning. We found the bar much more interesting with better service and a better vibe. Oh, and live music is a plus."

"I was wanted to like this restaurant but in the end there isn't anything special that you can't find elsewhere. Menu was limited. They were out of the Dover Sole, out of the salmon, lake perch was deep fried, calamari was fried. The whitefish was good; beef barley soup was good; crab cake was good; wine list was limited.

The menu becomes somewhat limited when they run out of their signature dishes. Tortoise Club was OK but we won't be coming back because of that."

"My friend and I stopped in for an early Sunday dinner. Tortoise Club's welcoming environment was just what we needed. The staff was extremely well versed in all menu items, the Manager was very warm, welcoming and made sure we had an excellent experience. I would recommend this hot spot to anyone looking for a fabulous meal, great ambiance, and superior staff and management! We will be back for sure!"

"The atmosphere was really nice, the bar was swanky, the service was great, but the food was just okay. It was underseasoned and much to my dismay, no salt and pepper on the table. I get that chefs want people to taste their food the way that they intended it to be. Great idea - but you need to season the food. No tobasco or horseradish with the oysters either. Just a bland vinegar based dipping sauce. Cool place, too bad the food didn't match."

"A little noisy, but clubby venue with a lot of energy-not stuffy, like similar restaurants. The signature Tortoise and Whisky Sour cocktails were a great start to the meal. We enjoyed each dish, from the tomato soup and crispy shrimp appetizers to the Lobster Roll, crab cakes and steak frites for our entrees, and amde room for the homemade toffee cake and brownie, each with ice cream. The only thing was our waiter dropped the check as soon as the dessert was served and never asked us if we cared for anything else - coffee, after dinner drinks. "Took my friends here on Friday night for their birthdays. Loved the table they put us at, great view of restaurant. Great waiter who suggested some wonderful cocktails to us. Appetizers very good. Main meal had mixed reviews; my risotto was outstanding but the two orders of featured Fish were a bit disappointing, very small portion of fish and the sauce was just ok. @ $45 pp it didn't come with any potaoes etc.
BUT the restaurant did make a wonderful gift of 2 desserts for our birthday guests because they read my comment of my friends birthdays on Open Table. What a nice treat and gift from them.
Over all we loved our night there, we will be back."

"The restaurant has a great feel to it, especially with the 3-piece band in the bar. The food is not particularly noteworthy - it is not the aim of this place though. We had late 9pm reservations on a Saturday night and the place was full and energized - extremely loud with lots of groups having a great time. Our service was comically bad though. Our waiter disappeared for a long time and another waiter finally came over to tale our order. We ordered a bottle of wine and entrees at the same time. The food arrived at our table roughly 10 minutes before the food did. I have never seen that before."

"This restaurant offers a unique experience that is remarkable. When I arrived, I had a problem. I needed email access, and my phone was not working. The hostess provided me with the use of a laptop computer. The owner of the restaurant seated our party. He provided us with two options. We chose to sit in the red room because it was a bit quieter. The other member of my party was from Manhattan. "Ted," he said immediately upon sitting down, "there is nothing like this place in New York City. Is this a club? What is this place?" We had an excellent meal, accompanied by great service. I have already recommended this restaurant to friends."
