Sammy's at PlayhouseSquare is located at 1515 Euclid Avenue under the Ohio Theatre marquee. The completely redesigned space features modern accents playing off of the historic lobby architecture. The contemporary American menu offers local, seasonal, and sustainable items, and classic Sammy's in the Flats dishes with a twist. Perfect for pre- and post-theater and any special occasion dining in the heart of the Theater District, Sammy's at PlayhouseSquare is open for dinner seven days a week.
"We arrived at 6:15 and told the server we had show tickets at 7:30 at the Hanna. The server was very nice and, later, very apologetic. We ordered the 3 course meal. We had our soup, then waited and waited for our entrees, chicken and veal chop. There were about 3 tables filled in the place. At 7:15 we told the assistant manager and manager that there was no way we could eat and get to the show. They finally brought out the food and we wolfed some of it down in 3 minutes. The chicken was good, the veal chop was fatty. We didn't have time for the dessert. The assistant manager wanted to give us a bill, but we told her we didn't think we should pay. The manager said we would not be charged for the meal. We gave the server a tip and left."

"I took my mother here for dinner on Sunday May 12, 2013. I chose this restaurant over the others because the service over the phone won me over. I was not disappointed! The service was wonderful, everyone was friendly and inviting. Our waiter, Leon, was very patient with us and accommodating with my sleeping 4 year-old daughter.
I ordered the veal after multiple recommendations by our waiter. My previous experiences with veal were horrible! However, the veal at this restaurant was superb! My mother ordered the salmon and loved it! However, I thought the salmon was under-seasoned. The pound cake was not that great either, but the Cheesecake was great (not dry, like other restaurants). Great place!"

"Too rushed. I had to tell them to slow down. Received our wine and two minutes later the salad came to us. Also, the rolls were terrible. I remember Sammy's in the Flats and that was some place "special"."

"Convenient location next to Playhouse Square was the only good thing about this dining experience. The ambiance, service, and food choices were seriously lacking. They do not offer a full menu. For $26 you get a four course meal consisting of soup, salad, entree and dessert. Soup and salad are chosen for you - the lobster bisque was not great and the salad was tiny. You get a choice of 5 entrees. My entree (braised short ribs) was good (served with delicious risotto) but portion was fairly small. The dessert was good but also very small. Service was extremely slow. Server took a drink off the bill due to slow service (without being prompted). Overall, less than mediocre dining experience. Not what I expected from Sammy's - wouldn't go back."

"We chose Sammy's because of convenience to the theaters in Playhouse Square. We were somewhat disappointed with the blandness of the vegetables and starches. We had the beef short ribs and osso bucco on the fixed price menu. The lobster bisque was excellent as was the salad. The portion size was also appropriate. The desert was a bit disappointing. The fixed price menu could be improved by offering a choice of salads and deserts. The water initially provided for our tea cooled excessively before we were offered our choice of teas.
The meal was fairly priced.
While I would recommend Sammy's for theater patrons, but not for a fine dining experience."

"The menu was very limited and only offered fixed price choices including soup and salad (which I didn't want and didn't order but had to pay for). The excuse for the limited menu was there wasn't enough time to provide a full menu and get diners to the theatre on time, although any decent restaurant could have done this in the 1 hour and 45 minutes we had allowed with our reservation.Service was rushed, causing us to finish our meal 40 minutes before show time - and was unprofessional at times ("who gets the...?").If I had known about the limited menu I would have gone elsewhere. Sammy's apparently thought of this since it did not provide a menu on its website, Never again!"

"Overall, we had a satisfactory dining experience at Sammy's, but anyone planning to go there in the future should be aware that this isn't really a restaurant; instead, it's a version of Sammy's catering service. The menu is basically a prix fixe with no choice of appetizer, salad, or dessert, a choice from among five entrees, and no choice of dessert--very much like a banquet menu. There is a late night snack menu that's also available during the dinner hour, but the items aren't substantial enough to make a meal, and you must choose either the set menu or the late night--no mixing or crossing over."

"After reading previous reviews, we were pleasantly surprised. The Happy Hour prices for well drinks was $6.00.There was a pre-set dinner menue, but we had our choice of the lobster bisque or a garden vegetable. Both were very good. Bread was served with the salad. One dinner entree was not available. We did send our entrees back because they were not hot. The waistress was very apologetic and gave us fresh dinners. For the price of $26.00 the four couse meal was good. We will definitely try them again. They could not have been more accommodating to my request of dressing and sauce on the side."

"We attended after the theater rush, so there was no wait and very light crowd. The service was poor, the food selection was minimal. We ordered sea bass, it was by far the worst I've ever had. It was rubbery and over cooked, both my wife's and mine. We didn't bother re-ordering because it was apparent that the chef was not skilled in the culinary arts. We decided to go there based on a review in the Friday PD entertainment section by John Petkovic...bad move. Not sure what he based his review on."

"Once seated, we waited 30 minutes before flagging down someone so that we could have a server take our order. The food took an extremely long time to be served. The entire dining experience took 1 1/2 hours. It would have been longer if we didn't need to leave for a 7:30 show, so as not to miss the opening. The table next to us had the same situation, but at least they received bread while they waited, my table did not get that privilege. To their credit, the manager was very apologetic."

"Went before a show at the State Theatre. Since they have a fixed, small menu I thought it would be a well oiled machine with an organized pace to the food. Not so much. Show: 7:30, Reservation: 6:00, First food on table: 6:40. Mai Tai's were way overpriced and not at all good. Needless to say, there was no enjoyment in the main course or the dessert as we were shoveling the food into our mouths in order to make the show on time, although the food was fine. We did make it to the show on time but we (the diners) had to work way too hard to make that happen."

"Very disappointed that they changed menus. There was still confusion about new menus, each person got a different version and it was hard to determine which was the right one to order from. Very limited menu -- last time I was there, there were scallops and excellent lobster bisque. This time .. no scallops, just got the lobster bisque and it wasn't even good, and the lobster was mealy. We asked for water 3 times and never got it.
I would think that they would have service before a show down to a science."

"Bread there is a novel idea. Plate yes bread no. Others got it we did not. Now on to the wine. Wine list was limited at best and over priced. We saw one of our favorites but it was $175. Most places $150. The total choices included 3 Cabs. Our second choice was a $125 Cab which they were out of. The bright spot was they did give us the more expensive bottle at the cheaper price after my wife complained. The menu was like the wine list, limited. It was small plate or a four course dinner. Our fist pick on the dinner list was also not available. So only 4 entree choices remained They offered no choice for salad, appetizer, or dessert. This was my first time at Sammy's."

"I was disappointed with many things at Sammy's. When I reserved the dinner table for 5, I expected dinner not appetizers and desserts !! Nowhere did it say that dinner was only available till 9 pm. With such a superb location you would think they should be open for late night dinners, at least on weekends.( we went Saturday). While the waiter was indulgent and efficient, even the limited selection of food was sub-par. We ordered practically everything on the menu. The lobster bisque was not served hot enough and certainly not tasty. The Cheese platter was pitifully small with barely enough thinly sliced pieces of cheese to really call it a platter. I was a big fan of the erstwhile Sammy's restaurant in the Flats. This was'nt a good experienc"

"We have been coming to Playouse Square for years and had eaten at Star many times. When we saw that Sammy's was coming in, we were excited based on their reputation. I must say our dinner there was probably our worst dining experience in the Playhouse district. They were trying a new fixed menu, with only a choice of 5 main course selections. The soup came well before our cocktails...and then had to send one of the drinks back three times before they got it right. The dinner had the feel of a catered event, not a sit down dinner. Shame on Sammy's for trying to correct the lack of efficiency they had with a full menu and turning tables in time for shows, with sub par food off a small menu with little choice."

"On our Friday night theater dinner, the restaurant offers small plates--not too attractive--and a set menu, with several main choices. Price was very reasonable, but the food was undercooked [one fish dinner] or luke-warm [a fish and a meat dish]. Sammy's should do better. Waitpeople seemed harried and rushed. Very convenient for theaters, but needs to improve efficiency."

"Instead of their full menu, there was a four-course price fixe menu with extremely limited offerings. None of the diners were informed of this upon making reservations. There was a list of small plates, but they were out of the two that I selected. For a pre-theater venue, the service was horribly slow. Our food arrived to the table lukewarm and was barely mediocre in quality and taste. As regular diners at Star at Playhouse Square, this is the second disappointing meal that we have had at Sammy's at Playhouse Square since they replaced Star. The former ambiance is gone, the grand piano is now a silent piece of decorative furniture, and the meals were simply not worth the price. We will NEVER return!"

"Very disappointed. Food was fair but not what I would expect from a restaurant like this. Menu was limited. Servers did not seem to be trained properly. This is not a downtown quality restaurant. Seemed like the food was catered in and not prepared on site. Miss the Star! Why did you keep the piano and no player??"

"I loved Starz Restaurant and was sorry to see it go but was pleased to know that Sammy's was coming in its place. We ate there on April 16th before seeing War Horse and were very pleased with the service, ambiance and food! The pre-priced 4 course selective menu for the evening did not disappoint... from the lobster bisque to the chocolate torte, we savored every bite! Our entree choice was the Chilean Sea Bass and it was perfect. They also offered a Late Night Menu with small bites. The staff was great and got us out in a timely manner for our play. My only suggestion would be to expand a bit on the overall menu selections. We will definitely return!"

"Our first visit will be our last, this place can't hold a candle to the offerings of it's predecessor Star. First of all the menu is VERY restricted if you are ordering dinner you only have one choice of soup and one salad to pick from, don't like those too bad. The entrees were the only bright spot if only the server could have got our order correct after 2 tries. My wife never did get the veggies for her dinner. They served a martini in a champagne glass and never did serve us bread. I could go on with examples of the poor service but understand that it's only been open a short time and they must be working out the bugs, which by the way ended up in my water when they refilled my glass! I wish I was kidding but alas it's all true."

"The service was outstanding. Everyone was friendly and attentive to our needs. Only one cabernet (by the glass) on the wine list; lobster bisque, salad and entree (Osso Buco) were very unremarkable and forgettable. Chocolate torte was best part of the dinner."

"Not what we expected and rather disappointing. Overall, we felt it was equivalent to a high-priced cafeteria. No legitimate menu, only a single page late-nite menu of generic appetizers and a single page menu offering the meal of the day. This was 'advertised' as a four-course meal consisting of soup, salad, a choice of one of 5 entrees and chocolate cake for desert for a fixed $26. The lobster bisque was good, although a bit weak on flavor. The salad was utterly uninspiring being the same shredded lettuce one would get on a Big-Mac, a single grape tomato (halved), a small dusting of feta cheese and what might just as well have been bottled 'Italian' dressing. We both had the sea bass, which was the highlight of the meal."

"I would have given the food 5 stars, as I know Sammy's is capable of 6 stars...however the Salmon retained a large portion of grease that as much as the outside of the fish was crispy, the greasy flavor interfered with the mild flavor of the Salmon. The potatoes were starchy and gummy / made me feel as though they had been overcooked. I try not to be too critical, but if I were Sammy's, would want to share with the chef."

"I began the meal by ordering a "Godfather". Our server did not know what that was and asked. When the drink came, there was no taste of amaretto at all and the drink contained a zest of lime! Why? And, the scotch seemed watered down as well. I sent it back and a bit of amaretto was added. My husband ordered veal osso bucco which he said was fair. I ordered the chicken lemonato which was a breaded and fried breast of chicken. The breading was burnt to the point that I removed it prior to eating the meat. The Ohio City pasta turned into a sticky blob with a non-descript sauce. When the manager asked how everything was she did make amends."

"I'm a Broadway Series for the past 20+ years and have enjoyed dining just prior to each show. My last two visits have been disappointing and this past Saturday was a disaster. Our food order was placed by 6:15 PM but our entrees never arrived. We spoke repeatedly with our server and with the floor manager without any resolution. The four of us eventually just got up and walked out at 7:25 PM for the 7:30 performance. I don't know what problems the kitchen is having but if they aren't corrected, Sammy's won't exist too long. It is such a disappointment. I had hoped for better when the restaurant was announced to be Sammy's."

"Cedar planked salmon, mashed potatoes and green beans were excellent, cooked and seasoned to perfection. We appreciated the presence of a vegetarian option, the panko crusted tofu, but taste was merely ok, nothing special. Staff was great, pleasant and helpful, and service was appropriately quick, allowing us to make our curtain without feeling rushed. Prices are not exorbitant, but on the high side for some choices."

"The service was outstanding at Sammy's when we went. That was the highpoint of the experience. From a food standpoint, the food was good. Basic, simple, and tasty, but not remarkable. Of the three items that I ordered, they were out of a portion of the appetizer, out of the main course, and out of the dessert that I ordered. So, food was fine, but the overall experience was unimpressive. That could have been a one-time event, but I will think twice before returning."

"They were out of many items of their very limited menu. We had a 5pm reservation so it was not that late. They "compt" a shrimp cocktail because thu did not have two of our choices and then put it on the bill. Service was erratic because they seemed overwhelmed with the people dinning before the shows which will b a constant factor as it is the most convent restaurant there. I will not be giving them a second chance due to their high cost and multiple mistakes."

"I have been at this restaurant several times, but this time I can only describe the experience as somewhat chaotic. We were walked to one end of the restaurant and back in the nearly empty restaurant to be seated. Waitress took order for my party of 5, but different servers brought food. Food servers were very disorganized, not knowing to whom each dish belonged, which dressings were which for the salads, & even trying to serve us dinner again as we were waiting for our checks. I ordered the red & gold beet salad as first course. Delivered with only red beets. Two people came to see why I questioned the dish. Finally, they said they were out of gold beets. The dish should not have been served if it was not as described. Doubt I will return."

"We arrived at 6:05 were immediately seated and the server asked if we were going to a show. Yes, and it starts at 7:30. Drinks were ordered and when they arrived we said we would order. My lobster bisque arrived in about 10 minutes and was very excellent. At about 6:45 I told the server she could go ahead and bring a bottle of wine we ordered. She said they were trying to find it, Qupe Sryah, after about 10 more minutes she arrived and asked if the wine she had was the correct one. It was not, but it was a French Rhone so we said that would do. At about 7:05 we asked about out dinner having been there for an hour and the curtain just 25 minutes away. I'm running out of characters. But, to close the rack of lamb was not good, overcook"

"I've been twice. First time we ordered small plates, service was great, timed out nicely. Second time we ordered a split appetizer, house salads and entrees. Appetizer came, followed in about three minutes by the entree. We sent it back, asked for our salads next, then the entree. That worked better (we had plenty of time) but the entrees were cold when they arrived. It's a very expensive restaurant, they need to do better than that. However, manager did comp two desserts."

"We had a 5:45 reservation prior to attending the theater. When we arrived our table was being used by a local TV station to film a segment. The staff was confused about where we should sit. First they told us to wait at the bar. We were headed to bar...then they decided to take us to another table. We waited for 5 to 10 minutes to have our drink order taken. Our food arrived quickly but mine was not hot. My wife ordered the Osso Bucco which see said was very fatty. Service was slow and indifferent. It took a long time to get our bill and pay. There are 2 many good alternatives is the Playhouse Square area to have to tolerate slow indifferent service"

"Unfortunately, Sammy's is only adequate. With their proximity to Playhouse Square, they have a guaranteed pool of potential patrons. Sadly, they are taking advantage of this. The food, service, wait staff, bar service, are all just "ok". They've done nothing to make the evening special. Hopefully, they can turn this around but it's not going to be on my dime."

"We were quite disappointed with our second experience at Sammy's. We had happened on the place on their opening day and so considered their shortcomings to be the result. Unfortunately our most recent experience was the same. The food was good but not great and with the high prices the food should be outstanding. When you consider a couple of doors away you can get outstanding food at reasonable prices I'm not sure why anyone would go here. We used to love listening to the piano player while dining when the venue was Star Restaurant. We saw a piano at Sammy's but no one was playing it and our waitress told us then never have anyone play it. Makes you wonder why it's there. The noise level was extremely high."
