"Wanted to experience the open roof dining but of course it was raining when we had our reservations. It was still very nice, the noise level a bit intense but as soon as it quit raining the roof was rolled back and noise level was instantly gone. We had a GREAT experience and plan on bringing out-of-town guests to experience the same great experience we had."

"My wife and I dine at Union Rooftop on Father's Day and got the best of both worlds. First hour was sunny and warm and matched up well with oysters and cocktails. 2nd hour was stormy and we got to watch the roof close. After that, it was about the dining experience which was very good. Attentive service and good entrees (scallops / burger) mean we will be going back."

"A rain shower closed the roof prior to seating; and then sun broke through and the roof opened up - that alone was worth the trip. Seafood sampler, lamb meatballs and cheese assortment were all very good. Wine was above average. Prices were in line with downtown. Very good. We'll return."

"The rooftop dining is spectacular, especially when they close the roof while you are dining! They hardly skipped a beat during our main course when the clouds rolled in, and they beat the raindrops by a minute! The air conditioning kicked on immediately, and all was well. The rain poured overhead and we enjoyed a cool, dry dining experience. The food is good, but not spectacular, and the wine list is limited and expensive. It almost seems like they can't decide if they are a bar or restaurant."

"This was a very fun venue.. The food was good but not great. I had the rib eye. Which was full of flavor but slightly tough. When our salads arrived at the same time as the main course I was very disappointed. Felt like the staff was more interested in turning the table than providing good service. I may go back for a burger or drinks and appitizers but will choose another location for a nice dinner."

"This was our second time eating at the Union. They opened the roof just after we were seated. Unfortunately that was the best part of our dining experience. We had the savory donuts are a lot smaller now and lack taste now. the meat tray app with artisan bread. Meats ok, bread lacking.
My wife had a salad, Apples and shaved sunchokes, which was ok. I had trout, which came warm, not hot, seemed done but was just ok.
We tried dessert, a rather odd conglomeration of stuff. Its rather like all the food at The Union, a rather odd assortment of food throw together to try to be unique rather than good. Not sure who's palette created all this, but I would not go back there, roof opened or closed."

"Great food, even better atmosphere. We were on the rooftop, it was open and gorgous. Fun drink menu, and knowledgable staff. Only complaint is that the bar area got VERY busy later in the evening and diners sat at tables near the bar (which we were not, thankfully) had bar patrons crowded around their tables. Advice -- ask for a table away from the bar, then no worries!"

"Our dinner began beautiful and sunny and perfect for Union's roof top dining. About 30 minutes into dinner very dark clouds arrived and we knew rain was coming. The rain did came but rather than being forced inside as we would be with most rooftop dining, Union simply covered the dining area with their retractable glass domed cover. It was windy and rainy outside yet we were dry while still enjoying our 'outdoor' dining. Lovely!!! We plan to go back at night where the added ambiance of lighting might be especially nice. Our server mentioned the protected outdoor dining is also especially enjoyable in winter during a snowfall or on a too hot and muggy day."

"How would you guess that such an oasis existed high above Hennepin Ave??? The lunch menu offered many choices that showed a great deal of originality. The best part was we didn't have to leave our first born child to pay for a wonderful experience. For these who have to protect themselves from the sun, be sure to request a table in the shade."

"I ordered the steak Cobb salad. The salad arrives with bunch of arugula, some unknown leaves with branches soaked in olive oil!! There are no dressing, 2 tiny piece of tomato, tiny piece of avocado and two blue cheese crumble and 4 thinly slices steak...Price $17....seriously this the worst salad I had in any downtown Minneapolis restaurant.
There are not enough servers in the rooftop on a Friday during lunch hour. The server never comes back and asks how was the quality because he is serving 4 other tables.
The restaurant is in a great location but the service and food quality and quantity is terrible."

"I've been here a few times for drinks and apps, but just did dinner for the first time. The dinner was fine, but nothing special, as was dessert. The cocktail program, however, is one of the best in the city--such creative stuff! As for the apps, if "bacon scallion doughnuts with cheese" sounds like something you'd enjoy, you must order these! And the rooftop dining experience is one of the best in the city!"

"The service and setting were both great, but the food was unremarkable. The shared seafood platter could not compete with Stella's Cold Platter for value or flavor. The bay scallop ceviche was the least appetizing I have had, including the one I make at home and the offerings at Stella's and Porter Creek (and at any number of restaurants in Mexico City). The dressing for the Caesar salad was bland, and I was stunned to find that its "croutons" had been sweetened. My husband liked the buffalo oysters, but I found that any oyster flavor was masked by the fried (wing) taste of the breaded coating. This is probably a great place for a burger and beer, but not a fine dining destination. We loved the patio, however!"

"We had a steak cobb salad and mahi mahi tacos. Both were good, salad could have been more generous with avocado and blue cheese, tomatoes were like what you would find at Cub, dressing needed more oomph (Dijon? something?) Tacos were wonderful, as was the MsMn cocktail. Great setting and service."

"I can't say we'll go back again, but it was different! It was nice to eat outside on a roof (new experience), yet we were seated at high tables that were squished between lower tables. Not only was it tricky to get to our seats, but even the waiters/waitresses had trouble. At one point, I just had a server had me a plate over the table next to us. Also-my fish was undercooked and I had to send it back. The appetizers were interesting and different (wild rice krispies??), but I can't say it was anything memorable. Our waitress was fantastic. We're glad we went to experience it but can't say we'd go back."

"Union Rooftop has a great rooftop, drinks and food. It is a little pricier but offers a great view. I have been there a few times and their their service is okay but needs improvement. Each time I have gone, I have felt that the staff was trying to rush us out and they are not attentive. The reservation system is not consistent either. I still would recommend the restaurant and hope these areas are corrected as it is a nice venue with a lot to offer."

"This place is too loud for dinner. It is a place for a bar crowd, not an enjoyable dinner experience with friends and family. The food is overpriced for what you get. Would be a good place if you are looking for noise and cocktails."

"This was my first visit to the Union rooftop and I must say I was impressed. The food was very good and the atmosphere was very warm and relaxing. It was nice to dine and relax in such a nice setting. The service was great and they went out of there way to make it a special experience. I would definately would come back again and recommend to friends."

"Union is the only restaurant in N. America with a retractable roof. So rain or shine, you'll enjoy the outdoors. But don't think that's the only attraction. The menu is creative and unique, our meal was memorable, the service was attentive and friendly. The wait staff even fussed over us because it was our anniversary."

"Was really excited to finally get in and try Union rooftop. Unfortunately things were just all around not good. We were not greeted for 20 minutes after being seated, you couldn't hear each other talk because it is so loud when the roof is closed, and when the roof is open guests openly smoke next to your table without any care. The food was less than exciting and since everything took so long by the time we received our entrees the bar was already coming alive and the tables around us were being used as high top bar tables so i had gentleman standing and bumping into my table and chair while i was trying to enjoy my meal. All in all we were not impressed."

"We took our 19 year old granddaughter there for lunch, and she was very impressed. Her steak frites was the best she'd ever had, and she loved the ambiance. The retractable roof was unique; we'll go back on a day when it can be open because the noise level is high, otherwise."

"Fine dining however service still very new. From the host station to the servers you end up getting a feeling that people are a still getting use to the service industry, a little different than you would expect for semi-fine dining. Perhaps with time the service will improve."

"When the door opened to the rooftop, it was definitely cafeteria loud. But after getting seated, you become part of the chatter and zone it out. The food was great, along with the service, scene, and location. I would highly recommend this restaurant and it was fun to try foods with a twist. The desserts were delicious as well....and the "snack" doughnuts were a stand out. My husband had the egg noodle with lamb that had a lot of kick! He likes kick, but it tested his limits, and he enjoyed it. For me, it was way beyond my spice palate, but again I prefer mild. I had the trout and it was a great combo mixture with the fish, spinach, artichoke chips, and proscuitto."

"The evening started great with the roof open but as it progressed it started to sprinkle and the roof was closed. Thats OK, other places you would have to go inside and a new place to dine. We just stayed where we were and we were covered in a couple minets. The food was terrific, the whole experience was fantastic."

"The portion of food was truly unacceptable. Steak ordered was medium and came out medium well to well done. Tenderness of meat was very tough. We ordered the ribeye steak and comes without a salad or any potatoes. The sides of mushrooms, beets and spinach is not a good combo with this meal. After the meal went to Mc Donalds to get full. Super cool setup and vibrant scene...quality of food was poor."

"Had lunch on the rooftop. The roof was a great way to enjoy the sunny beautiful day. The food was good, but not memorable. I had a steak salad that was satisfying and my lunch companions were happy with their meals as well. The service was great. Our server was helpful and took good care of us."

"Food was very unique. Drinks were well done. Servers were polite, but messed up orders a couple of times. They squeeze people onto the roof very tight, so it can feel a bit like a cattle car up there. And if you are in the wrong seat when it starts raining the retractable rooftop will not be of any help... You will be out of luck for a table. So look at the forecast or request a table under the roof section. Last, the ambience is not unique in any way. It's an after work happy hour spot, not necessarily very romantic or beautiful.
If it weren't for some really unique food and drinks, this would have been a lower rating.
Overall, we had a good experience. But we were hoping for more."

"Great rooftop dining and what a view! enjoyed the Union ambience but the food was just ok. Oxtail burger very good, nice wheat bun, Trout was good but the presentation not too appealing, steak was good, scallops were ok, just warm and could have been cooked a little more, they were greasy. Too many over priced items, they need more items in the 15.00-20.00 range. They did give us a free desert with a candle for daughter's BD which was a nice touch. Wait staff were excellent and fast service. Have to try Happy hour when it's sunny:)"

"My fiance and I decided to check out Union Restaurant & Rooftop after reading about in Star Tribune's "Best of Minnesota" series. The rooftop dining area was truly unique - I couldn't stop staring around the place! The staff was extremely warm and welcoming, and the food was excellent. There are a lot of unique items on the menu (the savory donut holes were awesome!) which made choosing what to get a real challenge because everything looked so great.
It's a bit more upscale than our budget normally allows, but for the quality of food and service that we got, we agreed that the prices weren't outrageous by any means. I honestly can't think of a single negative experience we had there. We'll definitely be back for special occasions!"

"I came here for my anniversary. I had the reservations for two months, and asked specifically for a table alongside the fence. When I got there (on time), someone had already been wrongfully seated using my reservations. I was not given a table alongside the fence as I requested. I also sent a picture to the manager via email of an example of a special anniversary desert (found on their facebook) that said "happy anniversary" that I requested to be sent after dinner as a surprise. The waitress ruined the surprise by mentioning it to my girlfriend (she said she didn't read the whole note that the manager left). When she brought it out, it didn't even say happy anniversary on it. The waitress was slow and treated me and my date very poorly."

"My reservation was later and although they were extremely busy they were able to accommodate me and my guests an hour earlier. The rooftop was warm due to the heaters on what was a chilly weekend night. Service was prompt and friendly on the rooftop. Definitely a place to return to again and again."

"Fun ambiance, but not great food. My husband and I both got the lamb and pasta dish. Mine had no lamb in it- for $22- and he sent his back as it was so overly spicy. We'd asked our server about before ordering it and she never mentioned how spicy it was. His salad was also not good. Mine, the apple and greens, was good, though almost no trace of apple!
They brought him a hamburger quickly, it was good.
Our friend had the veal chop and gave me some of his since I couldn't eat the pasta and there was no lamb in mine. It was delicious- and for $38 it should be!
Go once for the scene, just get a small plate and enjoy being outside with the option of being covered when it rains, which it did.."
