"The most modern of Richmond Mexican restaurants, we loved the atmosphere but were ultimately disappointed. It's expensive and that would be fine if the food lived up to it, but it doesn't. My wife's shrimp & scallop enchalatas where very strange. It was a bowl of white Mexican cheese drowning small enchalatas. More cheese than we have ever seen for a dish like this. She had to fish her enchalatas out. The shrimp was very overlooked and she never did find a scollop in there. My soup was delish, but empanadas just ok. We asked for a couple plain tortillas for our 2yr old and they actually charged us $2 for them. Each of our meals cost over $15 and it just wasn't worth it. You don't even get chips unless you order an appetizer."

"I'm not sure why people complain so much about the prices.. we ordered a lot of appetizers and several entrees, which were fairly large portions. The food was amazing!! Our waitress could have paid attention throughout the time we were there instead of just at the end, but since the food was so good that did not ruin our experience. We were a group of 7 and not one person had a complaint about the food or prices! The lobster ceviche and queso dip were absolutely delicious!! I will definitely be going back for more and I would recommend Casa del Barco to anyone who loves food!"

"We had the perfect combination of warm Spring evening, outdoor dining, and great friends, and Casa del Barco rounded the night out perfectly by providing attentive and knowledgeable service along with good food.
We sampled two different guacamoles, both fresh with huge chunks of avocado.
Three of us ordered the roasted mushroom enchiladas, and all of us devoured every bite.
Each drink served was delicious, and our server's recommendations were spot-on."

"We went there for a Bridal Brunch celebration. It was fabulous. A pretty quiet morning in the restaurant. They were very accomodating and made sure that we had all we needed to get set up. The server was great and very attentive. The drinks are awesome. My favorite thing about this place is the GUACAMOLE MENU!! So yummy. The rest of the food is pretty fab too."

"The food was quite good but not much better than what one could find at any of the chain mexican joints in town (or even in the suburbs), and for the price I expected better. It does stand out by the variety of it's choices though, diverging from the tried and true. The margaritas truly were excellent but waaaay overpriced. I'd only go back during happy hour."

"Restaurant has very nice design - very interesting conversion of an existing building.
Our server was working his second night, which he explained as he corrected his fourth or fifth mistake of the meal. He was earnest and willing but green.
The food was mediocre in both concept and design. The menu selection was weak in all respects - the descriptions and combinations on the menu left each of us (three people) struggling to find something appealing to order. Still, order we did, and each of us was disappointed with what we received. Each dish was monochromatic - brown on brown - and other than being very oversalted, without much seasoning or flavor."

"Menu is interesting, but food quality doesn't over impress. Great bar/tequila/cocktail menu, decent happy hour specials. Food is WAY over-priced, particularly considering most is accompanied by rice and beans, two of the cheapest sides there are. Adjust the pricing on the menu and I would think this place would be packed. I wouldn't go back here and pay full price for the dinner menu; you could eat at the best restaurant in Richmond for the money. This is good for drinks/appetizers, or when they have food specials."

"The quacamole was awesome. My chicken tacos were soft shelled, which I didn't expect and I don't think the menu stated. The chicken was a little dry. I'm not a seafood fan and they have a lot of seafood, especially for a Mexican restaurant. My husband loved it and he enjoyed the tequila;) we'll go back more so for him, but maybe I will have better luck next time(I will try something new)"

"The staff at front and our waiter were very accomodating and friendly. The waiter, Andres,was especially patient with our large chaotic party. Service was very good and could not have been more accomodating. Our waiter was also very knowledgeable on menu and tequilas and assisted us in making selections. "The food was good but not great. It definitely was not authentic Mexican food. I think going to the cheaper but nice quality food Mexican restaurants like Plaza Azteca is a much better deal. I ordered the chipotle lime chicken enchiladas with the verde sauce. The chicken was good but the verde sauce didn't have much flavor. The plantains I ordered with my meal were awful. I really think they just fried bananas. They had no flavor whatsoever. If they want good plantains then need to let them rip and learn to double cook them. The rice was ok but it had an odd after taste so I barely ate it. We asked for chips and salas ( something any Mexican restaurant provides) and they told us it was a 5 dollar charge."

"It's a bit hard to find first time round as I am new to that part of town. I am sure I won't have the same problem next time. It's a super location even though it was a fairly drab late Winter evening. We stayed for dinner after meeting friends for happy hour. We started out with the fresh guacamole which is the best of I have eaten in Richmond. My wife had the smoked duck tacos (3) which were more than enough for a main course. Beautifully served, she said they were excellent. You don't see rabbit very often in restaurants so I ventured the rabbit mole which was, again, very tasty. The wine-by-the-glass was fine. Fun place. Good food. Friendly service. Good value. Definitely one to add to the list for an evening out."

"I've been to Case del Barco twice this month, and the food is delicious! The traditional foods like guacamole and tacos come with interesting and delicious sauces and pickled condiments. The drinks are great too. I will definitely go back. During happy hour the place is packed, so be prepared. We also went for dinner on Sunday, and the place was quiet and our party could easily visit with each other."

"I had great expectations for Richmond's newest attempt at a Mexican restaurant. I had heard good things about Casa del Barco. The restaurant looks fantastic. The margaritas were pretty darn good. My hubby had a jalapeño margarita, which was tasty as well. We ordered the bacon tomato guacamole, which was ok, but would have like to see a slightly bigger portion size for $10. Our server was a little awkward, and when I asked if I could substitute the cilantro rice for the Mexican rice, he balked, saying "we don't recommend substitutions." The salsas were a little too bland...coconut-radish and carrot-ginger, and neither went well with anything we ate. Even the rice and beans, which should be staples for a Mexican restaurant were blah."

"Impressed by the physical plant and the friendly service. The menue was another matter. My wife and I ordered off the left side or light menue and generally found the items too sweet and lacking contrast (sweet vs savory) with a notable absence of garlic and onions. The guacamole was the exception and was excellent. I found the Posole to have an excellent flavoring, but it was not served hot enough (my bad for not sending it back) and I have normally seen Posole served as a stew rather than a soup, i.e., it was a bit thinner than I would have expected. I must admit my standard for Mexican food is the Sonoran-type as I grew up in Arizona. Recommend adding a salsa similar to the one they serve at Little Mexico on Cary St."

"The atmosphere is romantic and lively. The drinks are strong and flavorful. However, I ordered the enchiladas and it was the blandest meal I had ever tasted. Definitely not authentic Mexican. To doctor up the meal, I requested salt, pepper (which were not already available), Sour cream, and a host of hot sauces to smoother the tasteless meal. After that, it was good enough to eat. On another note, the dessert was delicious: Bread pudding smothered in a caramel sauce I believe."

"First time dinning at Casa Del Barco, interesting location. The restaurant is an old Reynolds Metal building that has been professional repurposed. The main dinning room is open and airy with a relaxed enviroment. The wait staff was very helpful and knew the menu well. The food was great, fresh ingredients separate this restaurent from it's competition."

"Very crowded bar! Looks like a great place to go for drinks. We went for an early dinner. My husband loved the pork tacos and lobster ceviche. I had the crab cakes which were also good, although the cilantro rice was not that great. We had the fried ice cream for dessert which was not good at all. It was so hard that the spoon they provided would not cut into it. Fifteen minutes later and it was still too hard. My husband tried chopping it with a knife. The inside was still super hard and the flavor just wasn't good. Since that was the last thing we ate, it kind of put a damper on the experience but we will still go back."

"My wife and I like to explore new and interesting restaurants in the Richmond area. Casa del Barco (CDB) is a great find! The ambiance is fun, energetic and trendy. It really looks and feels like an upscale Mexican restaurant. We started dinner with some guacamole which was very good. We ordered the habanero one and were hoping for a little more spice. We also ordered a flight of tequila which is trio of tequilas (blanco, reposado, and anejo). The cocktails were great. Food was fantastic. It was a more contemporary mexican cuisine rather than your typical nachos, chimichanga and taco joint. We will definitely be coming back, but next time with more friends!"

"Overall a good experience. We went there for Valentines Day dinner. I pre-ordered the flowers for the table and it was a great touch. It was very busy as usual, so we were sat in the back of the restaurant. Although a booth would have been nicer for this occasion, we understood it was a busy night. The service was very good. I wish I had taken the servers advice and ordered the pork shoulder, as my entree of short ribs was more fatty than usual and slightly burnt on the outside. Otherwise the food was very good, but slightly overpriced in our opinion. Great place for a group night out."
