"We love Ron of Japan. Kids love it, grandparents love it, we love it. It's fun, the food is great, and their birthday song is fun for one and all. Highly recommend it for young and old and everyone in between-- but for the kids, especially. My picky kids love the food. Every single bite. And we rarely have leftovers. Big parties are easily accommodated and the tables are round and facilitate lots of interaction that a long traditional table at a different restaurant wouldn't. The fire burst is always an event and the chefs aren't just good -- they are nice and we learn something about Asian cultures (not just Japanese) every time. Great experience."

"You go to places like this mostly for the entertainment value. The food is ok but for the price it is a let down. ~$175 for 3 kids and 3 adults and we all had items on the lower end of the menu. Our chef just didn't seem into it and other than the big flash of fire, it was just watching some guy cook. Even the waitress was a little gruff. This place seems to get by on decor and nothing more."

"Although the food was fine, our server was clearly having a bad day, was not only unfriendly, but blatantly rude to the other party at our table. We chose the restaurant because we thought it would be a fun place to celebrate our son's 6th birthday, knowing that there would be live-cooking in front of us that in the past had been done by friendly, entertaining chefs. We were notably disappointed."

"I used to go there when I lived in Chicago. Now that I have moved away it is nice to go once again. The food and menu have changed but it's still wonderful. At first I thought their prices were a little high but I soon changed my mind after one bite of their beef. I could tell right away that it was quality beef. The shrimp portions are generous as was the lobster tail. All in all it was worth it and we had a great time with the other folks at our table."

"We have dined at Ron of Japan many times over the years, but our experience last Sunday night was very disappointing. We waited 30 minutes to be seated, and then, we were placed in the dreaded back "Party Room". That room is dark, smokey, and noisy. The service was very slow (15 more minutes to place a drink order). Our chef was friendly, but the service and preparation was not up to par with soup and salad arriving at the same time and undercooked vegetables. Often, our waitress was nowhere to be found. My suggestion is to wait the few extra minutes and avoid the Party Room. We will from now on. Hopefully, it was just an off night for Ron of Japan-not typical for them."

"The ambience takes me back to the 70's. Older decor. Whether you order fish or steak, it takes on the same flavor. Cooked the same way, in the same oils. The grillman did a great job with the show and meal presentation. Seated in a booth with strangers. Do not recommend for a romantic date. It was an interesting experience."

"The restaurant seemed to be in chaos re:seating people. Had a 7:45 reservation. Arrived at 6:30 by choice. Were told we would be seated in about 40 min. At 7:30 we asked when we would be seated and were told it would be closer to our reservation time, which would have been okay with us. At 8:00 we asked again and were told 1 reservation ahead of us. After seeing 4 groups seated, we seeked out the manager. He was rude and argued with us. He had to comment that he seated over a 1000 guests so far that day. I really did not care how many he seated. It wasnt us at or near our reservation time. We were finally seated at 8:30 (with people that had a 7:30 reservation). All we ask is to be told the facts and we would be fine. Food saved the day"

"I was looking forward to attending since I had been to the Downtown Chicago location a few years back. The restaurant was beautiful and the food, typical habachi; no better or worse than a Benihana's. Our waiter could have been more friendly. His responses to our questions were usually one word responses and he never smiled, once! He did however clear our areas quickly ( a little too quickly since the salad and soup came 2 minutes apart), on the other hand, the staff and our chef was very friendly and even lit the fire twice at the request of my daughter."

"My sister and I took our mom there for an early Mothers Day dinner. Our reservation wasn't until after 8pm and didn't get seated until after 8:30 but once we arrived at our table we quickly found out our adult eventing was now coming to a halt as we were place In a booth with three tiny, whining children And their very rude parents. I just felt that it was unacceptable for us, beig three adults being seated with a family of three kids so late and without being asked if that was okay. It was the most awkward dining experience I've ever had, and to say the least, we won't be going back anytime soon."

"I'm not a huge fan of hibachi dining. The food at Ron of Japan is far better than your average spot. It is tasty and fresh. This restaurant is terrific, great blend of good food, kitch and fun!"

"My husband and I took 5 grandchildren, ages 7-10. Having a booth keeps everyone corralled and the kids like it better too. The blast of fire was disconcerting to one of them when he was 5, so be sure to let the chef know if you don't want it. Also the shrimp kids meal is only 3 shrimp, way to small for the 8 year old. Chicken and sirloin kids meals were more than generous and sharing is easy. Milk is not an option but the kids all loved the fruit smoothies."

"My husband and I used to love Ron of Japan. There is another Japanese steakhouse in Arlington Hts. that we also like but thought the portions were starting to get smaller. I was disappointed in the service at Ron of Japan. Our waitress was never around and when I asked her for a side salad she never brought it. I was surprised that with a $22 dinner, there was no salad included. I thought in the past there used to be dipping sauces like a ginger based sauce etc., but it was only soy sauce. The chef did not entertain but just cooked which is OK but he had no personality and we were there for a birthday celebration. There is valet parking but when we were there, a Sunday night, there was no need for it since there was plenty of parking"

"Food was good. My nephews enjoyed the fire, but would have been nice to have a bit more "show". Celebrating my sister's birthday. Told the host when we checked in about the birthday, then also had to tell the server since she clearly did not get the message about the birthday. All my sister got was a candle. REALLY?? Just a candle? Our party of 6 spent over $200 and you couldn't even give my sister a complimentary scoop of ice cream??"

"Ron of Japan is my daughters favorite so we celebrate here. We had a delayed celebration because she was home from college after her birthday - it is always worth the wait! Thanks for a fun and great place to celebrate!"

"The food is not very flavorful- the options are limited and we were seated in an awkward fashion at the table. It was a large round table that was half empty but people were seated right next to us. They also did not acknowledge my husband's birthday even after I had written a note about it in advance. The table chef was very courteous and did a good job but other than that, the experience was not the greatest."

"Waitress rarely came back to check on us. Had to flag down other staff members to ask for drink refills. Messed up the bills adding a bottle of wine and drinks that were not ordered. She did not apologize instead seemed irritated that we were refuting some of the charges. Took about half an hour to come back and have resolved. In the meantime no one checked on us. The kids were getting antsy during the wait wanting their ice cream. She then proceeded to rush us out the door when she came back. Never taking our ice cream order that came with our meal. Needless to say, not the best experience for us. Next time we are craving golden shrimp, we will consider another Japanese steakhouse."

"Food was average at best. The table we had in the corner was extremely hot. The open cooking grill top and poor ventilation made it so hot we had to shed layers of clothing to avoid sweating."

"What can one say about this north shore institution? we recently dined here with grandkids in tow (they love the fire) but came away disappointed. While I love the red asian decor, the restaurant and presentation is just plain tired and SO greasy and smoky! The next day we were all complaining that our clothes had to be immediately laundered to remove the greasy smell. That said, our filet mignon entree was excellent. The staff was very pleasant, cordial but for a "presentation" type restaurant, the servers just seemed kinda tired of the whole routine. I think maybe we are too."

"We were a party of five and ordered a number of menu items including the sea bass, filet and scallops, sirloin steak, chicken and shrimp, and vegetables. Everyone agreed the food was excellent and watching the preparation at the table adds to the fun. The format places multiple parties at tables to fill, so the atmosphere is more one of cordiality and fun than a romantic dinner. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed the dining experience and are highly likely to return in the near future."

"My husband and I tooks our kids to Ron of Japan for Valentine's Day dinner. We were seated right away. I didn't know they had a special menu that night. I had shrimp as an Appetizer and shrimp for dinner. The cheif first cooked our shrimp appetizer. I was so disapponted the shrimp was over cooked and burnt. He had the flame too high. When I got my shrimp dinner he did the same thing burnt my shrimp. I have been going to Ron of Japan for over 30 years and I have never had a bad experience. It will be awhile before I go back."
