The Bull Valley Roadhouse

{Join us for COUNTRY BRUNCH starting June 15th!}

The Bull Valley Roadhouse serves American roadhouse food prepared from scratch with century-old techniques using fresh ingredients from our favorite small farms. A beacon at the end of a canyon road in the ramshackle dock town of Port Costa, the roadhouse welcomes locals, travelers and adventurous day-trippers alike in its 1897 landmark dining room and bar. Stepping into the saloon-like rooms, guests can sense more than 100 years of hospitality. The proprietors strive to maintain that warm tradition and leave everyone feeling relaxed, well fed and eager to return. Look for us under the golden bull.

Saturday and Sunday brunch starting June 15, 2013 through October, 10:30 am through 2:00 pm.

"We have been here for dinner many times and loved it. The food is great! The bar and atmosphere are worth the trip.. We tried brunch which is new. Some of the food was not good, while some was amazing. To be expected during the adjustment period of a new service. I would definitely recommend this place!"

"It was worth the lovely drive from Oakland to Port Costa. The restaurant is in a great historic building; the staff was very friendly, but rushed and seemed under-staffed. The food was very tasty. A bit on the pricey side, but pretty typical Bay Area prices with quality, local food and drink. Not everyone likes to do the family style sharing, yet I think they're ok accomodating to those who don't. II'll probably go back and try brunch soon."

"Drive to the end of the road in Port Costa and park! The Bull Valley Roadhouse is alive and bustling (at least the Saturday we were there)! Friendly staff greeted and escorted us to our table. Grab a cushion if you can if you're sitting on the bench. There were 4 of us celebrating a return to Port Costa after an event 30 years ago! What a treat! All the meals are prepared family style - we shared the crispy green beans, a mixed green salad, rib eye steak and a fish cooked in parchment and boned at our table! We took our own wine - $20 corkage fee was OK. For dessert, we shared the chocolate/butterscotch pot d'creme - also outstanding!
If you want to complete the evening, stay at the Burlington Hotel next door!

"I have not been therein at least 40 years, when it was the Bull Valley Inn. Getting there is a bit of a pain but once you arrive it is great. The food and service is outstanding and friendly. There were 4 of us and we had rack of lamb, fried chicken and the wrapped fish. All the dishes were excellent. A little pricy but well worth it."

"Bull Valley Roadhouse proved to have excellent food and cocktails, and a romantic ambiance. Service was outstanding and the staff went the extra mile to make patrons comfortable. The portions were sized for two so we ordered a salad and entree and shared them. Bartender was able to concoct and excellent Blood and Sand upon request, and though we lingered at our table chatting along with another party until an hour after closing they patiently waited until we were all done. Great food, great atmosphere, great experience in scenic Port Costa."

"For those of you who remember the Bull Valley Inn, this is a totally different experience. The cozy romantic old inn feeling is gone and the feeling now is more upscale artsy antique. although not pretentious. The Caesar salad was excellent and the cold watermelon soup was creative and intriguing. We ordered the ribeye steak and it was good. I do not like a lot of heat spice to my food and everything including the steak was pretty hot. If you are expecting to see the menu items listed on the website, they were not in evidence. They did not offer bread, although at the end of the meal a table near us must have asked as they were brought bread. The tables are close together and as the restaurant filled, it got incredibly noisy."

"Warmly greeted by our servers Christine and JJ, it was the beginning of a wonderful evening. Everything was just as expected and more. Don't miss the smoked roasted peppers on the appetizer menu. New and delicious. The fish (professionaly boned at the table) and rack of lamb superb. Side dish of summer squash was our only disappointment, a gooey blob, exhibiting none of the freshness of the season we expected.. Ended with a peach cobbler that was perfect. We'll definitely return."

"Was excited to try this restaurant after hearing good things about it. Had the rib eye which was somewhat tough (didn't seem to be a good cut of meat). My husband had the pork stew and the meat in his dish was dry. Did enjoy the mixed greens salad. The noise level even without the restaurant being full, made it hard to have a conversation. Was so hoping to have found a nice dining experience.
Will not return to this place.

"Overall great-- Loved the location, and the selection of food and drink offerings. The fried green bean appetizer was a standout-- Worth going back just for that! All else was likewise excellent. The idea of "family style" service is not normally my cup of tea, but we made it work and I can see its good points as far as being able to try a variety of the sides as opposed to a large entree for each person. Am anxious to go back now that I "get it"!"

"I have been to the Bull Valley Roadhouse four time of late. The food has always been great (I particularly like the fried chicken). My major minus points would go to the very loud noise level; they could really use some some sound deadening drapes, or other material so that a normal conversation may be carried on. Staff are friendly and welcoming and the drinks pretty good. I'll go again."

"We have been coming to the Bull Valley for a few decades, though not often. We loved what they have done with the place and the menu sounds delicious with lots of choices. The food was pretty good but the family-size portions made it difficult to choose when there are only two of you at dinner. If you are a couple that likes the same thing for dinner, this is the place for you. If you like a bit of variety at the table, maybe not so much."

"Was anxious to try this restaurant after reading about it recently. We ate outside and found the ambience to be more of a picnic atmosphere...not quite what I expected for the price paid. Shared a table with another couple which was fun, but if looking for romance...perhaps indoors is a better choice. The fish was delicious and our neighbors had the fried chicken and lamb which they raved about. The mussels were delicious. Quite different with the french fries on top. The Wedge Salad was just okay. The disappointment was the dessert. Peach Cobbler was overcooked and the peaches were canned. Unsweetened whip cream and no ice cream. Also, waited quite a while for our bill."

"Fun destination. Cool space. We happened to dine on a warm evening when the doors and windows were open, which was special. The drinks were great, as was our waiter. The food was also excellent. The crispy green beans were delicious as was the salad with pears and gorgonzola (a tad on the sweet side but so flavorful). We shared a slow-cooked pork dish for the main course. It was a perfect blend of smokey pork and tomatillos, lime, cream and cilantro atop creamy polenta. Our only criticism was that the pork was cool (not even lukewarm) and the price seemed high for the amount of pork. The flavors were quite good though and the polenta beneath the pork was warm so it was definitely enjoyable. Great experience overall!"

"First time dinner at Bull Valley. We were offered a drink as soon as we walked through the door at the bar or sitting lounge.
When our guests arrived we were all seated in main dinning room although there is outside patio service available. Our waitstaff, part owner, explained the menu and made recommendation which turned out to be superb. Everything was good but the chicken, steak, and mac and cheese were divine. The wine selection is moderate but a decent value and poured without crimping. The coffee is french pressed and hot. A great ending to an excellent meal. I believe the restaurant has only been open with these owners for 3/4 of a year. I wish them all the best in their venture. With food like this, success should be assured.

"The four of us loved the restaurant. The food was magnificent, the wait staff knowledgeable and friendly. I don't like red meat and often skip it, but the ribeye steak was so great that I had a second helping. The caesar salad is the best I've had in years. An added benefit: Port Costa is charming and the drive in from Highway 80 is fun. It's definitely worth the drive. (We came from Berkeley.)"

"The food is terrific. But the ambiance is dismaying. The noise-level is deafening. The "Victorian" decor is confined to the attractive bar area. Equivalent attention should be given to matching, sturdy cutlery and bigger tables with greater distances among them. The outstanding food contrasts with the waiters, who dress self-consciously and uniformly sloppy (but two boorish patrons did wear baseball caps throughout dinner, so...). They’re friendly, but unskilled: bread isn't offered unless you ask; if you don’t finish your wine, watch out or it will vanish abruptly; coffee (no decaf) had to be requested twice. If you want excellent food at tablecloth prices with a barbeque or pizza joint atmosphere, you'll be very happy here."

"Food was very good and the entrees ample enough to share. When we return we will probably stick with just starters. Service was prompt, friendly and a bit quirky, making it a fun experience.
I am not inclined to rhapsodize about the roadhouse ambience as much as others have. It was like many roadhouses out in the country. The drive there from I-80 is picturesque and easy. The dining room is all hard surfaces so the noise level got high once the place filled up--hard on my ancient ears. Chairs not too comfy.
Service is family style, and my husband and I agreed that it really works better for a group larger than just two, so you can try many dishes.
Two starters, two entrees, one dessert and no drinks came to $119 including tax and tip.

"We had never been to Port Costa. It is a small, hidden, funkily little town which added to the ambience of this restaurant. The food, drinks and service were excellent. A place I would recommend everyone should try."

"What a surprise to find this wonderful restarurant in such a unique setting. The food was out of this world, melted in our mouth.
Preparation very unusual, a real treat.
We will come back again it was so good, I don't think you will find any better food in california then what they brought to our table.

"A very interesting dining experience. Our party of four had all of the starters ordered, and two sides as well. They were excellent. We were advised that the mains were quite substantial and meant to share. We had a half fried chicken which was quite small, nice but a bit pricey at 39.00. The deserts were very well received and the Pisco Sours well made. The town is a must see, and the history, which one of the owners revealed to us, is fascinating."

"In the middle of nowhere, sits the very tiny town of Port Costa. And in this town is a very unique find; a restaurant that rivals some of the best restaurants of SF and Napa. The food is beyond fabulous; creative and wholesome, fresh and delicious. All of the staff, including the bartender and managers, stopped by the table to chat and talk about the food. They were so gracious. The waiter explained the concept of family dining; instead of an entre' per per person, we instead got 3 (there were 6 of us), plus 2 appetizers, 1 salad, and a side dish. It was the exact right amount of food, and there were no leftovers."

"Very crowded, energetic environment on a Saturday evening. Service was great, from start to finish. Food was delicious. Loved the halibut ceviche, and peas. Branzino was unique, fried beans addictive. We also ordered the steak, and brought that home. the portions were ample. We skipped dessert, we were so full, and I am a dessert lover. My husband had a delicious homemade soda. Nice to have something non-alcoholic that is interesting and tasty. A fun evening in an interersting setting.
Parking is difficult. mainly available in an unpaved lot.

"Getting there is a problem. Winding narrow road. Don't drink too much. Food was excellent, especially the Tempura Beans and the Fried Chicken. Good price performer. It is small and VERY LOUD. Wouldn't go there for a romantic evening. Also would get the salad dressing on the side next time"

"Please do not make this a public comment. We have been infrequently coming to the place, under various owners & names, since the mid-70s. This was the first time the food took a nose dive. The family style is an idea that is new, but it worked. However, all the food had too much pepper. Pepper was all that we tasted for risotto, steak, and broccoli. Especially the lemon risotto, which we had assumed would be something subtle, was pepper with rice under it. Had we thought to order with the caveat -- "Hold the pepper." -- we likely would have had one of the delightful experiences that we remember from the past. The chocolate dessert was great, with not a hint of pepper. We hope this of some help to you."

"We went to the restaurant for my wife's birthday. I couldn't really find one negative thing to say about our experience at the restaurant. The interior has some great antique furniture pieces along with some more subdued modern art pieces. The bar is beautiful, my cocktail was a delight. Our server told us portions are large. This was true. Our mussels came heaped in a huge bowl topped with French fries and aioli. We then had the rack of lamb. The meat was cooked a wonderful medium rare. The only thing I wanted but couldn't find was a nice hoppy beer on tap. But, perhaps you shouldn't be able to have everything you want at a great restaurant. I give it five stars."

"The food is amazingly delicious; the BEST Ceasar I have ever had. My southern born and raised husband is tough to please with fried chicken, yet adored it here. The rib eye was tasty, too!
A few things to consider...no salt or pepper on the table (although my husband did not even need it OR Tabasco-high praise!), we needed to ask for a second round of drinks, and the whipped cream on dessert was whipped without sweetener and was close to tasting of butter(the children did not care for it and would have preferred vanilla ice cream on the cobbler).
Although it is a stitch pricy, my husband and I left already thinking about what we will order the next time we come here!"

"We went here for our 33 anniversary. We were seated inches between two other tables. It was so noisy that we could not have a conversation. My husband suggested we text one another which I thought was hilarious. The food was really good, but we were told that food will not likely come out at the same time so we were ready for the chicken arriving much sooner than the steak. It's kind of an awkward dining experience to let your food become cold to remain polite to other diners at your table. I have never had this happen frankly and believe it is kitchen laziness for a chef to not be able to coordinate your orders. The service was wonderful and the food was good but nothing like the price tag suggests. If you want to talk eat at the bar!"

"This is a great place! Love the energy, the staff, the food, everything about it. Had our second dinner there on Saturday night. The stand out for me was the mussels topped with a stack of French fries and a dollop of aioli. I've eaten a lot of mussels in my day and these have to be the best. The other stand out was the fried chicken. Tender, juicy, all that you'd want. Dessert was a peach cobbler. Y.U.M. Do your self a favor and zip on over to Port Costa for a fun evening. And if you spend the night, you can treat your self to the uber cool coffee house at the Burlington Hotel. They only serve coffee, tea, honey pound cake, sweet cornbread like you've never tasted before and bacon. What's not to love?"

"We before our reservation to enjoy drinks at the bar and were greeted by the hostess in a very blazay manner. The bartender ignored us for a good 5 minutes (we had to ask the hostess for drinks), then made $11 sugary-sweet Moscow Mules that had barely any alcohol in them. The food was uninspired and overpriced - $29 for fired chicken and mashed potatoes that were fine, but not anything special. The mussels with fries were tasty, but the $35 branzini was disappointing. Our server and busboy were friendly and attentive, which was a welcome change from the hostess and bartender. The next time we go to Port Costa we will have drinks at the Warehouse down the street."

"The town of Port Costa was certainly not what I expected after getting a recommendation to go there from a family member. Parking was very challenging. The wait staff at the Bull Valley Roadhouse were pleasant and very friendly. The food was delicious and pleasingly presented. The countryside was delightful driving to the small town but uneventful and a bit disappointing."
