"I've had the pleasure of dining here twice now. Both times the food was excellent and the service fantastic. They have an eclectic menu and you have to try the lamb meatballs. I'm not a huge fan of lamb, but had them both times I was here and will definitely order them on my next visit. Reservations are highly recommended because this is a new hot spot in Milton and you'll need them. Don't miss it.."

"We always appreciate when a restaurant tries to accommodate a particular table request, and Steel & Rye did just that--I asked for a window or booth table, and the four of us were seated at a booth at a window, which was very nice. The menu has many unusual items and combinations which we enjoy as we like to try new things. Service was very good, ambiance is great with high ceilings and creative touches. The only thing lacking is that we weren't crazy about the desserts we tried. I am a chocoholic and their chocolate offering just didn't do it for me. Overall, however, a very pleasant evening. Recommended."

"Exceptional food, flavors. Had halibut with pork and hominy stew. Terrific. My teenage son loved the hanger steak. I was able to snag a piece of smoked mushroom (hen of the woods?) from his plate. A lively, large room with outdoor dining. Pleasant servers. And in my neighborhood!"

"I have eaten at Steel and Rye twice now. Both times the food was outstanding. They clearly have an excellent and creative chef. Good wine list with many excellent selections in the $30-$40 range, as well as more pricy options. Nice "industrial" decor. It's noisy but not in a way that prevents having a good conversation at your table. Menu changes with what's available, a plus. Love it."

"Steel and Rye is a well-designed restaurant with very good food and atmosphere; co-owner Dan Kerrigan sets a friendly, positive tone that is followed by his very efficient staff. It is hard to imagine anyone not enjoying their meal here."

"My second meal at Steele & Rye: First time rates 5 stars all around. Second time only 4. Doesn't seem like a big difference BUT that's a 20% reduction in stars on the second trip (4-5 weeks later). Please keep improving Steele & Rye. We don't want you to regress!"

"Beautiful building, which was thoughtfully renovated. Industrial yet cozy vibe. Decor reminds me of West Elm. It's elegant and funky at the same time. Polished yet rugged. A nice balance. Service is great. Love that the servers leave a carafe of water on the table so you can drink a lot and not need them to constantly come over to re-fill. Food is great, especially the bread and butter they serve before your order arrives. Delicious and freshly baked on the scene! There is an open kitchen, a variety of seating options, a lovely bar, and a semi-private room for parties. There is parking, and the restaurant is also right by the Central Ave. stop on the Mattapan trolley line. The owner is friendly and has very high standards."

"Four of us had a great meal from the grilled octopus to the Halibut and swordfish and pastas. And the bartender came over to check out our drinks before he made them - and they were excellent!"

"The menu is a bit sparse and is not vegetarian friendly but the portions are good. Moderate pricing, $24 a plate. Very high ceilings so the noise level was loud despite the restaurant being half full. Very aesthetically pleasing. Small lot with plenty of on street parking. I'd come back again, but only for a special occasion or maybe just for a few cocktails. Service was very good."

"Overall, our experience was good/okay;not great. The front line hostess was warm. I wish she was our waiter. We had a male waiter who appeared tired and overworked. It appears that he was "waiting" the entire dining area. I would recommend this restaurant for a one time visit. The patio door was open and some big mosquitoes came for a visit. Apparently, the owner/manager may have noticed that we waited for a pretty long time. He stopped by to apologize for the delay. That was kind and professional. Because of his good manners, I will try the restaurant one more time. The food was good;somewhat for a western palate. The chips were salty. We all would have preferred fries or baked potatoes. Love the overall restaurant concept."

"This is a great looking restaurant with friendly and competent staff, but the food is only mediocre. The burger which was so highly rated by others was very good, but the pasta dish was very oily. The bread was warm, but the crust tough and chewy. The outside was open which is lovely and opens into the restaurant so even when you aren't actually exposed, you can enjoy the outdoor feeling."

"I apparently mentioned that the date was our anniversary--but I totally forgot that I had done that since I made the reservations 2 months prior. When we got there, they mentioned that they had reserved a very special table for us (and it was!) and then brought over a complimentary appetizer. After dinner they brought over an equally delicious desert and wished us a Happy Anniversary. It was a truly special experience. The food was fabulous and the atmosphere was full of energy--and that was on a Tuesday!"

"I love the look and feel of Steel and Rye, exposed brick and industrial lighting. The bar that overlooks the kitchen is a nice feature. The menu is small but offers something for everyone with a twist. I love the grilled octopus and the affugato dessert. The meals were a little bit too salty for my taste. Overall good expereince and enjoyed this unique place."

"My son and I were in the area, unknown to us and used Open Table to find a late lunch. Learning that Steele and Rye was renovated from a car dealer made me doubtful, but I was genuinely pleased with the ambience, interesting menu choice and staff friendliness. I would frequent it often if in my own town."

"The food here is upscale and delicious. They use a lot of different herbs and spices. My halibut was cooked to perfection, however portion was very small. I had heard that before we came. My partners veal meatloaf was delicious and ample. My only complaint is that it is very noisy and background music adds to that. However I would still recommend it."

"There are few things that are worth driving a half hour for when you're hungry. But Steel and Rye is, without a doubt. Whoever thought of Fried Olives is a culinary genius. Steel and Rye simply serves the best burger, ever. The bartender whipped up "my" drink to a tee even though it wasn't on the cocktail menu. The restaurant is beautiful and has a terrific vibe. I'd drive over an hour for this restaurant...but please don't move!"

"The appetizers were great and I enjoyed the lamb meatballs in red sauce and the mussels the best. The service and car attendants were fantastic! I enjoyed my meal but it was somewhat on the blander side for my taste and the pasta was a bit too al dente.
It did not feel crowded for a mid-size restaurant. I also like the open kitchen concept and seeing the chefs' work in action. The ambience was very relaxing and I didn't feel rushed. I will definetly come back for other menu choices."

"I love everything about Steel and Rye, from the ambience to the food. It's open and airy, very spacious. It's also laid back with no fuss. I had the swordfish with root vegetables. I don't usually like swordfish but was drawn to the rest of the meal. The swordfish was perfect, as was the whole meal. Did I say I love everything about this place?"

"My group and I enjoyed the ambience of Steel and Rye And waiting for our seats at the bar was great. We were escorted to our table and therein began the overbearing waitstaff service. We were there to have a nice meeting of friends catching up with each other. We wanted to enjoy a nice relaxed dinner. The menu was quite eclectic. Once again service overbearing. We couldn't even get the last piece of food off our plates before somebody was at our table whisking it away. We did discussed going back to this restaurant however our thoughts as we would stay at the bar and eat at the bar."

"I tried this restaurant based on the excellent review in the Boston Globe. All of us (my husband, myself and another couple) were severely disappointed. It felt like there was something wrong with the food all around -- the quality, presentation, and taste. All the fish dishes tasted briny with no differentiation. The octopus had a rubbery texture. The swordfish was extremely fatty. Something was seriously amiss. None of the staff smiled. The review specifically said how nice and welcoming everyone was. It was just strange and unfortunate. I really wanted to get behind this restaurant."

"We loved Steel and Rye. The food was delicious and interesting. The staff was lovely and friendly. We had a great night of wonderful food and never felt rushed even though the restaurant was very busy. There were options to please everyone. I was told special requests are no problem. Our grilled octopus appetizer was perfectly prepared. The oysters were fresh and delicious. Our entrees , swordfish for me and hanger steak for my husband , were some of the best we have had.The desserts ...fantastic ! Our waiter Derek was also top notch. Even the bus staff was great, poking gentle fun at us after either my husband or I, we are still arguing who, smashed the little glass jar of daisies. We will definitely be returning."
