"The decor of distressed wooden tables and a less-than-impressive curbside presence belie the incredibly sophisticated cuisine of C. 1880. As Chicago foodies, we didn't expect to find such culinary prowess in Milwaukee (sorry, Milwaukeeans!) but were truly impressed with the menu offerings, the talented chef's creations, the fine service, and the quality of the ingredients. We will definitely return when we're in Milwaukee again."

"I would've given the service 5 stars if our lead waiter hadn't been such a dud. My friend is a non-drinker usually interested in something fun whipped up by the bartender. When asked if there might be something like that available our waiter said 'not really' without offering to ask a bartender. That's a first for us. His assistant was wonderful though and helped to mitigate his complete lack of personality. My friend and I each had the tasting menu so that we could try everything and it did not disappoint! Each dish was expertly prepared and beautifully presented. I would be hard pressed to choose a favorite. I will be back next time to sit at the bar and have a lighter dinner of appetizers."

"My daughter and I headed to c1880 for a last day of class, getting paper published, and birthday celebration and all I can say is the food was superb. We had a nice bottle of wine, and the Beet salad with horseradish. I love beets but was worried about the horseradish...it turned out to be light and not over powering at all. Wonderful. We ordered the Rutabaga and Salmon entrees and switched half way through. both were wonderful, but the Rutabaga was amazing. Almost like a layered lasagna, but with thin slices of rutabaga, mushrooms, gruyere and spinich. to die for. we had desert: the Olive Oil cake with a blood orange glaze was delicious and the deconstructed whatchmacalit taster wonderful, but not exactly a great visual."

"Overall, the food was fabulous but not something I'd go to for an easy dinner. It was beautifully presented but it required an open mind as far as taste buds. The food was also very expensive with a small menu. It would have been nice to have something classic like chicken or steak on the menu to fall back on."

"Thought the atmosphere was very cold. One wonders why the wooden tables were chosen, instead of table liner. Service was good but not very warm and friendly. I thought $12 for a martini that was half filled in a small glass was exorbitant. Prices overall are very expensive; however, the food is very gormet. Dessert list left a lot to be desired. Also, since my dinner companion was celebrating a birthday, i though a little acknowledgement should have been forthcoming. A small baby crying throughout didn't help the overall experience. Don't know if I would return."

"I took my wife here before a concert. The outside doesn't look like much, but they have done a nice job dressing up the inside, with a bit of a rustic feel. The food, from the appetizers to the desserts, were creative combinations of flavors, textures and colors. The pheasanr entree was done in a sauce with a bit of "zing" to it - unexpected but wonderful. The porkbelly appetizer was superb. The "whatchumacallit" dessert sounded kind of weird, but tasted wonderful, as did the sampler of sorbets. My wife got a kick out of the chef's mom coming around to the tables asking how everyone's meal was. I highly recommend this restaurant for any nice night out."

"I would rate C1880 as one of the best restaurants in town. The menu is one that is not common and everything on it is delicious!!
I have been there on several occasions now and have never been let down.
The service is great, the staff is friendly and attentive. I love that they change up the menu and offer a selection that is original and exciting"

"c. 1880 was one of the best dining experiences we have ever had. We ordered the chef's tasting menu with accompanying wine pairings, and everything was incredible. Items I would never have ordered otherwise, such as a beet salad starter or veal cheek entree, were surprisingly delectable. Our server was energetic and knowledgeable; the smaller capacity of the restaurant gave a cozy, more intimate feel; and the chef's mother even came out at the end of our meal to make sure everything was to our liking. c. 1880 is definitely a gem in the local, farm-to-table movement."

"The atmosphere was comfortable and the service was pleasant but the portion sizes are tiny for the price and both of the fish dishes were under cooked and under seasoned. The Lamb dish was delicious just small and the scallops were a hit. Overall a pretty good experience. I'd go back for drinks and appetizers."

"The night started off in the right direction upon opening the wine list and seeing it begin with French wines....not something you see in Milwaukee and a real treat. "Great food and equally great and attentive service. We had the pork belly which my husband raved about. Cooked perfectly and surprisingly not greasy. Also had the steak tartare, which was tasty but was overshadowed by the pork. The spouse had veal cheeks which were very tender and cooked perfectly with yummy sides. I had scallops with a cauliflower purée and anchovies. Scallops were cooked to perfection but the anchovies made the dish a bit too salty. Finally the dessert was amazing. Had the whatchamacallit, chocolate, toffee, peanut butter, ice cream. So good! A very good dining experience that I would highly recommend."

Lamb(which I love) was gamy, whatchamacallit dessert was off-putting given all the brown smears on the deconstructed chocolate dessert plate.
For all the pomp, the rolls served pre-meal were rather boring.
The menu changes often, so may give it another chance.

"We ate here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. After reading the reviews, we were expecting a fabulous meal. We were very disappointed in the food - lacking flavor and variety of choices. Veal cheek - don't bother! chewing fat is not appetizing! Went out for frozen custard afterward because we were both still hungry. I've never written a review with this low of a rating."

"Had a lovely dinner on a snowy Tuesday night. I started with the celeriac soup (served too hot, but good); my husband had the foie gras, which was excellent, but he was disappointed with the rye bread that accompanied it (and only after multiple requests)...the bread was too complex for the foie gras; plain toast points would have been a better choice. He had the lamb entree, which was outstanding; I enjoyed the rutabaga lasagna. Nice wine list.Skipped dessert. Overall we enjoyed it very much."

"This was our first experience at c.1880 and it won't be our last! We did the tasting menu and it was the best dining experience we've had in a while. Our first course was the the celeriac soup, followed by my favorite, the pork belly, then scallops, veal cheek, a grapefruit julius palate cleanser, then the watchamacallit dessert. My wife's favorite was the crab, which she had instead of the pork belly. We moved to the area from Chicago a little over a year ago and c.1880 is on par with some of the best new restaurants in Chicago.

Besides the food being amazing, the service and ambience were welcoming as well. Aaron, our server was great!

We will definitely be back!"

"The food was simply amazing. The thought and effort by the chef just shines in every single dish. The flavor profiles were meticulously thought out. The talent in the kitchen is obvious. Wait staff is very knowledgeable about the menu and wine list as well. If not the best meal I have had in Milwaukee, would be #2. If you really love food and appreciate a chef who is pushing the limits, you have to go to c.1880"

"I find it very difficult to reveiw this restaurant. The service level from our initial greeting, through dinner service, and exiting was exemplery. However, the food was so OVERLY COMPLEX, with so many conflicting taste levels, I'm not sure my palate enjoyed it?
The decor and ambiance is very nice and well done. I would applaud the chef/owner and his kitchen professionals for their efforts at culinary excellence. I am concerned about their sustainability. French food should notably center on the freshest of ingredients that are further enhanced by simpler, not more complex, compliments of sauces and side dishes. Best of Luck to them in their future endeavors."

"Had a great time. All the staff unusually welcoming and very pleasant. Food innovative and choices we made were excellent. Wait staff well informed. "We both had the lamb which was good but the side that came with it was greasy and hard. We have waiter feedback on side in an appropriate manner and it was clear that he was not happy to get negative feedback. My dining companion has the same order about 6 weeks earlier and states that the whole meal was excellent so maybe they were having an off night when we were there.

Very pricy for what you get. Will not dine there again."
