French Blue is a beautiful and welcoming all-day neighborhood restaurant located in the heart of downtown St. Helena, serving Napa Valley home cooking from Chef Philip Wang. The menu features rustic, wood-fired cooking, seasonally inspired from our own local gardens - the best ingredients, simply prepared. French Blue serves Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Weekend Brunch on Saturday and Sunday. The food is matched by a carefully edited selection of Northern California wines and hand crafted cocktails.

"Good food. Expectations were higher because of what we're read of this place. Dessert was a bit disappointing, bun was also a bit overrated. But all in all, it was a beautiful day, and with a couple of exceptions, it turned out pretty well."

"Spacious bright setting with high ceiling. Staff are friendly and responsive. Fresh ingredients and Food is flavourful and hot. Flatbread of the day is good. Grilled artichokes are flavourful but might have included a tad more fibrous leaves that I prefer. Other than the not so soft pasta, the english pea ravioli is nice. Grilled trout is good. Love the bacon bits! If the fish can be a little more tender and juice! It will be perfect. The apple chunks do not go well with the delicate fish though. May be apple thin shavings may be better. 8/10 overall enjoyment. Would go back!"

"We got in to SFO late, so didn't get to the wine country until after 9. Thought that our choices for dinner would be limited, since it was not a weekend. This restaurant was open and we were not the only folks there. The staff was friendly and sincerely happy to be there. The food was fresh and delicious. The atmosphere is like a beautiful French cottage, and the dishes are available for sale along with other items to remember your visit. We will definitely make this a regular stop on our sojourn to the wine country in the future."

"The setting was nice on the outdoor patio, but food was extremely salty. Both of us had fish (mahi mahi and the trout), and found that the dominant flavor was salt. Chalked the whole thing up as a "miss.""

"disappointing dinner....tough meat, tasteless side dishes; didn't seem that the chef knew what to put with what -- pork chop with fried (tasteless) spaetzle -- all layered: bottom was cabbage, topped with pork chop that was hard to cut on the bed of cabbage, then topped with the tasteless spaetzle -- super messy plate; better to go for breakfast or lunch -- great cinnamon roll, omelette, etc., for bfast....."

"Our service from Matt was excellent. We very much enjoyed the roasted artichoke starter, the arugula with dates and cashews salad, the spinach and asparagus salad, and for dessert, the strawberries in a puff pastry with creme fraiche. We were disappointed with the lack of flavor in the Rib Eye steak - the cuts we buy from Olivers in Santa Rosa and that my husband prepares and grills are far tastier. The herb crusted lamb with couscous was also not as flavorful as the lamb we buy for home. However, I think the heated leftovers the next day tasted slightly better. Maybe the meat buyer should look for a better source for their meats."

"The food was fairly good, but the service unacceptable. We waited inordinately long for even a menu and then again for drink orders to be taken. I ordered a grey goose martini with 3 olives. After 20 minutes, I received a gin martini. Apologies were given by both the server and host/manager along the lines of "I'm sorry, we'll get to you as soon as we're done with that large party" (there was a party of 20 in the restaurant). Being told were were less important than other customers does not win a repeat visit. Most disappointing was that despite a note on the reservation and a phone conversation confirming a special request for a birthday candle in companions desert, that was forgotten."

"The "greeting" of the hostess? The near-comic disregard of the waiter? The salt lick none-too-cleverly disguised as "food"? The prices? This was - without doubt - the worst meal of my life. The hostess could barely turn toward the door to acknowledge our arrival. The waiter, who tried to warn me off the Bloody Mary ("It's spicy." Deadpan. The drink was bland.), and then ignored us resolutely - when he did bother to visit the table he wouldn't even make eye contact. Plates and the check were deposited without comment. Who would ever put raw cucumber, red onion and sprouts on a burger? Bizarre. The meat miraculously arrived medium rare but was too salty to eat. Six bucks extra for fries? Seven dollars for a beer? Insulting. Wasted beauty."

"We read about French Blue in a design magazine. The interior decor is very California rustic and lovely. The menu is better than the food. We were excited to have a Mt Tam omelette. What a disappointment! We love that cheese made in Northern California, but the omelette was some eggs with a hunk of cheese on top. Yuk! Overall, the food was just OK. We would have been happier having lunch at Mustards - our totally reliable spot on the way to St. Helena . More style than substance."

"We were a party of five with a Sat 12:30 reservation for lunch. We were seated immediately but no waiter for a good 15 minutes, at 1:30 still had not received any food, when it came my mother's burger ordered medium was very rare had to send it back so 10 more minute wait. The food was very good the ambiance really nice. Thought the service slow......but would go back and hope for a better experience."

"The food was excellent. We were there for a birthday celebration, which I noted when I made the reservation. I guess they don't do anything for birthdays. Our server was great, loved the dining room, and can't wait to go back."

"After reading all the good reviews on this restaurant, we made our reservations expecting a great dining experience. The atmosphere is quite nice (think Martha Stewart chic). Unfortunately, the food was just average and pricey ($14 for one artichoke). In addition, the service while pleasant was sporadic with long periods of time when we couldn't even locate a server to flag down. With all the other great restaurants in the area, we would be hard pressed to even give this one a second try."

"What a delightful spot. The Sunday brunch was yummy. They have the best coffee!!! The "you have to try" cinnamon roll was perfect for sharing. Everything was delicious and the service was perfect. My only suggestion would be to come back and refill our coffee- we loved it so much we drank every drop."

"French Blue is in such a nice space, and the waiter was so friendly that I want it to be a bit better than it is. The food is okay, pretty good, not bad. I already can barely remember what we had, and we were there two nights ago. I believe one member of our party liked his pork, and my husband was underwhelmed by the sardines. The sommelier recommended a wine that was very sour. He tasted it and agreed that it was "tight." We replaced that wine. I hope the food gets better, more memorable. And that the waiter, who was so sweet, becomes more knowledgable about the dishes and wines he is serving. It's a case of almost, but not quite there."

"The menu has very few items that inspire. We chose the best of the worst. Creativity trumps solid menu items. What we did order was ver dry, meager, and not very flavorful or memorable. Decor is country elegant but service was poor. Saw our server when she took the order and had to flag her down for the check. They use bench seating which forces you to sit very close to strangers. Feel like you have to whisper, no privacy or romance, plus you can't adjust your seat because there are other people sitting on the same bench. Real design flaw. With so many other great places, why pay overly high prices for this mediocre experience. Try Market, Cindy's Backstreet, Goose and Gander, or Vercelli and see what really good restaurants are like."

"This place has great ambiance and service but falls down on the food judging by the three experiences we have had eating there so far - twice for dinner and once for lunch. I have ordered the trout for dinner and it comes COVERED in the accompanying vegetables etc. I like to see what I am eating and having to dig for the fish seems unnecessary - why not serve the fish with the accompaniments on the side so you can see everything? We have had overcooked flat bread (pizza) and salads with way too much dressing, think about asking for dressing on the side. This place could be great - they have the perfect inside outside location and decor - they need to think about their food more."

"I have been to French Bleu several times. This last time I brought in three of my out of town friends. All the food was very good. The wait staff were friendly and non intrusive, and made great suggestions. We all had different dishes, and all were fabulous, though the burger, ordered medium, seemed a bit under done. I'd note that it wasn't sent back, however, because it was delicious! Don't miss the fabulous cinnamon role! The trout was amazing, and I am a big fan of the potatoes."

"The food at French Blue was exceptional. I did a little research before we went and even though the written research was very pro French Blue, I have to say that it was far more exceptional then what I read. The food was wonderful with the various combinations of local flavors was what I have not experienced. My party had a wonderful experience, the service was great and the ambience was beautiful.
This restaurant is on my list to revisit when I get back to Napa, tell you the truth, if I lived in Napa I would likely frequent French Blue on a regular basis."

"We all would definitely return to French Blue. I need another visit to reply more emphatically and with more fair precision. Our waiter was very very nice, but forgot several things we requested. When I reminded him at the end, he could not have been nicer nor had a better attitude. Had I not had a historical relationship to the space and the two present notable owners, I might have been displeased enough not to return or to complain. One of my guests said it was one of the most notable dinners she has had while in the Wine Country! I believe she had the pork. We all commented on how much we enjoyed our salads. My hamburger was delicious (ordered without bun). Desserts sinfully delicious! Must order the Flatbread "with something on it"!"
