"This has been my favorite place but in the last three visits the food seems to suffer from a lack of variety in the menu, boring menu. The flank steak was small in portion and lacked any flavor. I ordered medium to get it rare...food can be pricey and being as such the food has been disappointing. Celebrated Mother day and the old menu the occasion not as special. It was a let down..."

"I have never been disappointed by any dish. The chef sent an amuse-bouche to our table. It was a breaded shrimp with a mousse/pate and was very good.
I ordered the Big Island Ebi Roll appetizer. This dish is wonderful. The shrimp is perfectly cooked and the cream cheese gives it a wonderful creamy taste. No one should fear this dish being hot or spicy - it is not.
For dinner I had the Corvina Sea Bass. All I can say is ORDER IT!! Get it while it is offered. This fish is wonderful and sweet. If your someone who has been adverse to eating fish, give this a try.
For dessert I had the Mango Creme Brulee and was nicely surprised at the wonderful taste. A unique twist on traditional creme brulee and it works well and tastes great."

"I ordered a green salad and asked for aspargus. The salad came and there was no aspargus on it. No problem it happens. Instead of adding aspargus our waiter came and said "Oh, no aspargus. Have your salad anyway and I will be back later". I was like what? Another waiter came by and said "Oh, no. There is aspargus on your salad. It is grated aspargus". I could not believe they would go to the extend of lying this much instead of say I am sorry, I will bring your aspargus right away. Simple and no issue."

"The highs were unfortunately counterbalance by some distinct lows. The butterfish was delicious, but the vegetables and rice that came with it were cold. The crispy lobster pot stickers weren't crispy, but the lobster butter sauce with it was yummy. The highlight of the meal was the chocolate soufflet which I will bring my granddaughter to enjoy sometime."

"What can I say? Its a chain restaurant. We tried it because someone gave us a gift card, so why not? The dish we ordered ( the trio of fish samplers) was very good, the standout was the butterfish. But overall, its very overpriced. $35 for a fish dish is steep in my book. If you want to spend that much, I'd go to Waterbar instead. Again, good meal. Not outstanding. Was worth trying."

"Very nice ambiance. Restaurant is larger than the average San Francisco eatery and we appreciated not being squashed together so closely with other diners. Food is mainly from the sea but they have delicious land options such as short rib, and good dessert options. I enjoyed the "lifestyle" cocktails - skinny version of well-known drinks at 150 calories each. Would give five stars if it was cheaper. For a special occasion, much recommend this place."

"We are very lucky to have Roy's in San Francisco. The cocktails are delicious and the food is out of this world. It can be a bit noisy during Aloha hour and up to 30 minutes following; after that, the noise level is decent. We had scallops with "dynamite" crust, short ribs, and as an appetizer - lumpia. "We were here this past Saturday night. Our reservation was for 9:15 but we got there a little past 8pm. There was no table available but we were given the option to seat by the area where we can watch the staff prepare the food. That was such a great experience...we loved it. We were so glad we were seated where we could see all the action.It was like being at a dinner and a show. And, the sushi chef was great. He gave us a couple of appetizer samples which were amazing! We both loved the ambiance and the food! We ordered calamari as an appetizer which was amazing, our main course were both wonderfully made and the lava cake dessert was to die for! Thank you for such a great experience."

"Roy's is always good! Food consistently outstanding. San Francisco restaurant is not what I had expected after experiencing all locations in Hawaii. (Was expecting it to be a little more elegant, quiet and romantic for the occasion we were celebrating. We had a table for 2 that was far too big...we could barely hear each other with the distance and how loud the place was.) All in all, would still highly recommend this place! "I went there for a business lunch and our table was up on the loft. It was quiet enough for business discussion. Quality of food is as expected for Roy's...tasty. Our group ordered the poke and lobster dumpling for appetizers. Poke was very good; dumplings were deep fried and were a bit "hard". Three in our group ordered the blackened fish (forgot what the fish was) and it was more spicy than any of them expected. I ordered the butterfish and it was perfectly cooked and "yummy". We shared a delicious Kohala Molten Chocolate Cake with ice cream and fresh fruit.
Overall, I would go back again especically for business lunches since it has the right ambiance. Otherwise, price is on the high side but it's Roy's."

"We have been to Roys on Maui (2 of them), Scottsdale, and now San Francisco. This was our second visit to San Francisco. At Roy's, it's all about the sauces. Your read the menu's description of the sauce and think "I want that." Only then do you look and see if that comes on chicken, fish, beef, or pork. This is the opposite of how we usually order a meal."

"All it takes is one bad server... The special Easter brunch menu was imaginative and quite tasty. The ambiance at Roy's is always nice. Our main server was attentive, but one of the runners needs some retraining. He brought my tea, but no cup/saucer. I requested a cup/saucer and he said he would return with them. He returned to our table with another guest's coffee, and I had to ask again for a cup/saucer. He then returned with just a cup, but no saucer, so I had to ask the hostess for a saucer/teaspoon. When I was finally able to enjoy my tea with our shared desserts, the same runner returned and tried to clear our dessert plates before we were done. Could he not see that there was still food on the plates and we were still chewing?!"

"I hadn't been to Roys for a couple of years but it had been my favorite place. The butterfish was legendary, the lobster potstickers were amazing, and the iced tea had a delicious tropical infusion. This time, the butterfish was hiding a few bones, the potstickers were overcooked, and the iced tea was plain. Service was excellent and the food was still very good overall. I'll chalk it up to an off-day for the kitchen -- unfortunately these are painful off-days at this price point! -- but I definitely won't wait 2 years to go back for more."

"We were seated in the dining area next to the bar. It was very noisy. We usually eat at Roy's once a week. So, we have eaten at Roy's quite a few times. The time before this, our meal was not up to expectations. This time it wasn't much better. The atmosphere and food were very disappointing. The server (which is not same person as the waitress) or kitchen forgot to put salad dressing on both salads, citrus vinaigrette on the trout was too salty, forgot to serve vegetables with the trout, the mahi mahi was over cooked and tough (it was ordered the way the waitress recommended). The waitress spent unnecessary time and effort trying to make things better. For the price Roy's charge for these two dishes, I would expect much better!!"

"With the low-lighting, white tablecloths and table candles, Roy's is a great place for an intimate dinner. They offer a great selection of tropical-themed cocktails and their wine list is decent.
The food is a mixture of Hawaiian, Asian, Seafood and done very well. For appetizers, I recommend the lobster potstickers and kalua pork lumpia. The butterfish (sauce on the side - otherwise it's overwhelming) is very light, flaky and very good. I also recommend the seared ahi, which is a good cut of ahi, simply seasoned and seared.
Service here is also really good. The waiters are always willing to help with the menu and provide their favorites."
