The Schiavo family, owners of the Cafe Continental on King Street and Antonio's to name a few has just opened Veranda Restaurant & Wine Bar. Stop in to enjoy a great people, food and a place to relax.
"This was my second visit to Veranda. The first was so memorably horrible that I swore I'd never go back. Then Mother's Day snuck up on me and I was stuck -- Veranda was the only place that had openings when I needed them. Last time we ate there we ordered sangria. Our appetizers were consumed and our entrees were on the way before the sangria made it to the table. This time we ordered mimosas, and again waited an inordinately long time for the drinks. The waiter said "Don't tip the drink runner." Really? Their food is good, although when we asked the server to describe the "breakfast potatoes" he said they were kind of like potato salad. With eggs for breakfast? No thanks! In the end, I give it a "Meh.""

"It was not quiet dining experience that I was looking for in a restaurant. The sounds appeared to bounce off everything from the floor to the ceiling.
The poached eggs on my Artichoke Benedict were well done - I asked for more sauce, it was too dry to eat as it was. The waiter offered to redo the Benedict, however, after a 45 minute wait, I opted for more sauce. He did take that item off the bill.
My husband had the Bacon and Cheddar Omelette and was quite satisfied."

"We chose this restaurant because they were the only place we called that had an open table at 7:30 pm on Saturday night. I was a bit disappointed with this restaurant; it was a good experience but not great. The bread and butter basket was good (despite being just plain bread and butter). The spinach and cheese ravioli was OK but not very flavorful. My husband's and friend's dishes were much better - my friend enjoyed the clam and mussels, and my husband was pleased with his steak and mashed potatoes. The service was good, and I liked the ambiance, except that the tables were much too close together. I would eat at this restaurant again, but I would probably not be the one to suggest it (and I would order something else!)."

"We started with happy hour and stayed for Dinner. Veranda has a great happy hour drinks and food list. They were so enjoyable we decided to stay for dinner. For dinner we ordered the Charcuterie board. It was great - the potion sizes were great, better than the charcuterie we had at Quartino in Chicago, the week prior. We were also amazed to see that they were serving La Quercia prosciutto Bolzano salami . The charcuterie was very filling, we also split and order of the Eggplant Involtini and Scallops. It was the perfect meal for two."

"Friendly restaurant, accommodating staff, dull food. We had brunch but there is a lot brunch competition in Madison (Madison Sourdough, Marigold, Sardine, Old Fashioned, Manna, etc.). Not worth a detour; might appeal more to folks in the immediate area."

"In brought my family to Veranda last week. We had a great experience overall. Miles (our server) was very professional and did a great job with food recommendations and coursing our food. There were 6 of us and we all shared charcuterie board, that was amazing. For Dinner my parents ordered tenderloins that where prepared very well and my friend got the coq au vin who said it was prepared just how hey prepare in Paris. I asked to see if we could talk to the chef about it - he came out and chatted with the table. It was just a great experience. The food was great the people were great. I enjoy bring my family to veranda."

"The menu is delightful offering a variety traditional and non-traditional items. Unfortunately, the dishes are not prepared with the quality the menu implies. The food was not well prepared and the ingredients were sub-par. The crab cake was not lump crab meat, but more like canned. The wilted spinach salad with hot bacon dressing, was not wilted, or hot, and missing the bacon. The coq au vin, was chicken with mushroom gravy; sans any hint of red wine. The flan was over cooked and lumpy. Overall disappointing."

"A mid-week birthday with friends was enjoyable and quiet so we could visit and absorb all that the Veranda offered: great food, good and friendly service, good wine and beer! We're glad we tried it and will return!"

"Food was OK, probably worth one second trip, but not remarkable. Pasta was average, Pork chop was not spice rubbed as advertise, just seasoned. Two people had steaks and both said they were ok. Bruscheta (sp?) was very good appetizer. Service was good."

"Overall I will revisit and recommend to friends and family to have a visit. Food was great, service was great, but because it was 2/14 the seating arrangements felt too close together. I'm sure it was due to the high demand of everyone wanting to be there on 2/14. I will come back and hopefully we can have a little more intimate dinning experience without the high demand of Valentine's."

"Was good however they need to pick an area to focus. We had their pasta dishes which were good. Good service but either focus on tapas or entrees IMO. Too big a menu.."

"We went here for restaurant week. The portions were small, the food was decent (nothing spectacular). The service was terrible. The server never asked our table for drinks and wasn't very attentive. Unfortunately, I probably won't go back."

"Excellent, friendly and helpful service. Didn't care too much for the Ahi Tuna main course (initially a tough piece and brought to me cold), but the second try wasn't that much better (though it wasn't cold this time). However, my partner's steak was very good. The other parts of the meal were just OK. The wine list is the bomb and, from what I could see from other diners, the small plates are the way to go here. It's January in Wisconsin so outdoor dining will have to wait, but it appears they have a lovely outdoor patio. I can imagine coming back for tapas and wine on the patio on a summer evening."

"I didn't have the best experience on my most recent visit, so had to mark both my food and service as average, but it was Restaurant Week and the place was packed. Normally service is fine and food is stellar, so I think there were just too many plates being prepared ahead and/or the waitress wasnt getting to them timely as the food was cold. Desserts seemed dried out (possibly also sitting out pre-cut?), but looked beautiful and amazing. All courses were visually appealing/well-plated, as well as in good portion size. I've dined before and will still come back - epecially in the summer when you can't pass up the patio!! So relaxing and lush - you think you're in another country!"

"Keep in mind that we went for Restaurant Week, so they were busy. Yet that was no excuse for our meal to take 2.5 hours to serve and eat. Our waiter was unbelievably slow. All of the other tables around us were seated after us and long gone before us and they all had different waitstaff. We had the steak, which was very good, and the seared tuna, which was a slim piece of meat coated with a very sweet sauce that overwhelmed everything. Desserts were ok but not great--the best was ice cream, which is Babcock Hall ice cream, not their own. I was disappointed but will give them another chance as this is a new place now run by the former Cafe Continental folks, so hope they will redeem themselves."

"I went during Restaurant Week so it was a bit crazy. The kitchen was running very far behind and it took us an hour and a half to get our entrees. Generally during Restaurant Week restaurants and trying to get people in and out quickly and if anything I feel rushed, not so at Veranda. Our waitress was wonderful though, she was very gracious and apologetic for the delays, she brought us bread as many times as we wanted. The food was ok. I felt like the preparation was fine and I really wanted to like it more than I did but there was something not quite up to par about the ingredients. My husband said it tasted kind of like food service food, just spruced up a bit. The cake that we shared was flavorful but dry."

"Overall our experience at Veranda was pretty good. I went with two friends during restaurant week. I could tell that the kitchen wasn't quite prepared for the turn out. First courses were okay. The frisée salad was fine, but not too exciting, and the prosciutto wrapped asparagus was good, not great. We all had the beef tenderloin, which was very good and prepared to our liking. The mashed potatoes were pretty blah, but the sauce the accompanied the steak jazzed it all up a bit. We had one of each of the three desserts. Our fave was the ice cream, even though it was half melted. The other two, we weren't crazy about. I will definitely give veranda another chance, when they aren't quite as overwhelmed. The regular menu looked great."

"It was resturant week so the service was slow. The hostess was very nice and she busy making sure the resturant was running smoothly as possible. We ordered the olive salad and it was a good deal at 5 dollars and it was delious. My husbands tenderloin was ordered medium rare and was overlooked but still good and a nice size. I enjoyed my tuna steak very much and again was a good size. The mashed potatoes were very bad. Tasted like dry potato flakes out of a box. The food was warm and could be hotter. My chocolate cake was dry and very disappointing. It needed some sort of sauce since it was hard to swallow. The entrance to the resturant was a mess. A big vacuum closet with random cleaning supplies is your first impression as u enter."

"Went there during restaurant week. Had reservations. Service was slow; waited too long for our salad to arrive. Waiter never asked to refill our waters, which would have been nice since we were waiting so long. Food was good, but small portion sizes. Did not leave the restaurant satisfied."

"I came during Madison Restaurant week to try someplace new. The food was pretty good, but our waiter was horrible. We were there for 2 hours before our main courses ever arrived! I understand that they were busy during restaurant week, but it would have been nice if he had come up to our table and let us know that they were running behind. He did not check on us once aside from bringing our food/drinks to our table."
