Alma is a modern american restaurant located downtown Los Angeles in the vibrant broadway district. Our food is market driven modern american, inspired by the best from local farmers, ranchers and fisherman. The setting is urban and welcoming, with an open kitchen, long banquettes and a chef's counter if you prefer being up close to the action. We are open tuesday through saturday from 6pm to 10pm and look forward to having you in.
"We had a wonderful meal at Alma. Every dish was carefully prepared, beautifully presented and full of flavor. The corn soup may have been our favorite of all the great dishes. Desserts were consistent with the rest of the meal. Prices are decent but many of the portions are not large- even the main dishes can be bordering on "small plates". For us that was perfect. Only complaint- wines ( a small but nice list) by the glass are a bit pricey."

"Dinner for five, one vegetarian, ordered about 80% of items on the menu. Amazing range of tastes, textures, ingredients, yet none fell flat or were off the mark. We had an excellent meal at Alma in the winter; this meal was even better. Very reasonably priced and interesting wines -- domestic and imported. We were visiting from San Francisco, so we have only a few other LA restaurants to compare, but it is hard to imagine that there is any table in LA with showing this quality and innovation at this price."

"The food here is imaginative and the service is friendly and helpful. Is it the kind of food I will be craving the next day? Probably not. But if you crave a culinary adventure, come here and order some of the more curious dishes (pigeon!) The flavors are unique and delicious. I'm not sure I've ever had food like this before."

"I first went to Alma's in July of 2012. Ari and the team dazzled my taste buds and us captivated by the robust flavor combinations.
It has almost been a year later and the menus is a little more refined. But the Flavor experience is just as captivating. Now with a collection of very good wines and sublet upgrades to the decor it was equally as pleasant. Ari however was away but his influences on the team continue to amaze.
I would strongly suggest adding this to your To-Do list you will not be disappointed."

"Every dish was a culinary delight. As we ate through our courses, we continued to find something new to be impressed by: a cooking technique, layered flavors with high quality ingredients, or simply the presentation. Ari and his team have a clear vision and it shows! We loved our meal and will definitely be returning, and we'll be bringing all of our friends."

"Minimalist is the word that comes to mind when eating at Alma. Essential flavors, sparse furniture and pragmatic winelist. It is really a pleasure to eat here. If you are a fan of disproportionate amounts of food, do not go."

"Food notable, service amateurish. On our visit, we ordered champagne. No one knew how to open the bottle, served in wine not champagne glasses. Minimal attention to table, table not cleared in a timely manner."

"Of the "new wave" of Downtown restaurants with young talented chefs, this one really delivers without the attitude and arrogance of the others. We are looking for excuses to drive an hour to go back."

"Pretentious. The food was just plain stupid, most courses came with a gray paste that was cold soup or pate or something, and also with a small raw egg that was "pressure cooked." My girlfriend and I were laughing most of the time it was so silly. I was very hungry when we left. It was $150 for very little food."

"The food at Alma is exciting. The portions are as small as I've ever seen. What with insufficient food to feel satisfied and long delays and random delivery order, one begins to fantasize about going out for burgers. It was an uncomfortable dining experience. The portions are smaller than tapas size and quite expensive for the size. Add to that the mediocre bread -- 4 pieces for $5, the $32 pigeon also tapas size and one leaves feeling frustrated and annoyed. But again, the food is wonderful -- especially if you enjoy being teased rather than sated."

"The most innovative restaurant in LA righ now. The food is quietly layered, each layer with a surprisngly crisp flavor and the whole is always better than the sum of its parts. Ari is a super star and I'm a fan"

"Wonderful seasonal food in a pleasant modern atmosphere. We enjoyed the attention to detail and exquisite flavor with every dish served. We only wish we had had a chance to try an appetizer we ordered that went to another table...the servers did not realize their mistake even though the people next to us stated they had not ordered the dish...so there was a small breakdown in communication; however I was topped off with some extra wine as compensation, which was an appropriate gesture (although I would have liked to try at least a tiny bit of that appetizer dish!). We probably would not have been able to try the awesome buttermilk biscuit with pistachio paste and blueberry/meyer lemon sorbet desert if we had actually gotten it !"

"Tiny portions of creative food. The focus is clearly on creativity. Some dishes were creative and tasty (broccoli and mushrooms--although this was described as an entree size portion by our waiter, and I can't imagine anyone finding a couple of stalks of broccoli sufficient for dinner)and others were creative and odd (spinich/tofu beignets). I like creative food, but has to taste good. Iwould not eat here again."

"What chef Ari does with simple foods like vegetables is uncanny. The tastes textures and and flavours are amazing. This is a small restaurant in a sort of beat up onld building that actually looks closed, but what they are preparing in the kitchen will open your eyes to a new breed of cuisine all from local suppliers. Would book again first chance i get."

"Outstanding, beautiful, and lovingly-prepared food. We truly felt like we were experiencing food as art. And unlike so many fancy restaurants that just rely on a lot of butter & garlic, the food at Alma really brought out the individual flavors of the ingredients and then harmonized them! Best of all: my stomach was happy at the end of the meal. Often when I eat out at restaurants, my tongue enjoys the meal, but my stomach ends up in knots. We will definitely be returning!!"

"The restaurant was very charming, as was our adorable waitress. Everyone was incredibly helpful when it came to advising us on how to order from the interesting/challenging menu. I was disappointed by the food, as even oysters seemed to not be done correctly here at Alma. The wine list and beer list was very eclectic and interesting. We really enjoyed the beer that was suggested. The decor is charming and feels like you are in someone's home. I probably wouldn't go back because of the food, but I loved our server and the ambiance and my company."

"I had read several rave reviews for Alma in top outlets like Food & Wine and LA Times, so I was really looking forward to an amazing food experience. My parter and I shared the seaweed and tofu beignets (honestly, quite bland except for the burst of citrus peel), an onion soup with was very delicious with coriander flower as garnish, the bread and butter (save you money..2 very small slices for $6...ridiculous), liver pate on toast with date jam was excellent. I had the chicken with roasted sunchokes and wild spinach which added a great bitter bite, and my partner had the steak (4 very small slides about 1x2 inches big --for $30). Good food, but waaaaay overpriced and not enough. We had to stop at California donuts to get dessert."

"This place is over hyped. Went with a group of six foodies and tasted the entire menu. Food was just OK, not incredible. We were all disappointed. Roasted broccoli dish was supposed to be "the" item of the night. It was very good, but two spears of broccoli for $16, that's a bit precious. Crispy potatoes with smoked onion creme fraiche was basically a couple of roasted potato wedges. Based upon all of the great reviews, we were really excited to finally eat at Alma, but unfortunately, "the emperor has no clothes.""

"Food delicious, tasty flavor combinations such as the tang of yuzu against a vibrant saltiness, good options for vegetarians, small portions, the desserts were interesting but not as well resolved. Interesting quirky selection of wines that paired well with the food. Waitstaff was pleasant and attentive. Still needs to iron out how they manage seatings: we had a reservation but were told we could only sit at the bar. When our meal was almost done but not quite, the Maitre d' came over and asked us to leave the bar because there were others waiting! We were mid-sentence, sipping the last of our wine towards the end of a 3 course, 80 minute meal. Very odd to be politely asked to leave when we would have been going in a few minutes anyway."

"Had heard about the adventurous menu, so I was expecting more flavor explosions. We may have been limited by the Tuesday night prix fixe menu. The pumpkin seed soup was outstanding, but the salads and main dishes were not that special. The tofu/seaweed beignet that is raved about--not so big a deal for me. I'm glad I tried it but was not wowed. Greek wines were a revelation!"

"Excellent dinner, we especially liked the tasting menu rather than selecting a variety of dishes. On a week night it was nice to have the chef plan our dinner for us. We liked the veg or meat options for each course. So often there is only a meat focus. All great except the kale salad which had way too much dressing. Blood orange sorbet with candied fennel and a delightful cake was to die for."

"Great food at this little gem of a new restaurant in downtown Los Angeles. Don't be swayed by the neighborhood. Soon it will be a happening place in no small part due to the creative and delicious food prepared by chef Ari Taymor. The restaurant is small and reservations are a must, especially on weekends. Try the tasting menu on Tuesdays!"

"Food is outstanding. Simple, the best ingredients, beautiful. We've had the sunchoke soup that's on the menu now twice, and it is out of this world. The wine list is short, but tasteful & original. Cozy with maybe 10 tables, ambiance is refreshing--a low key East Bay vibe with just a hint of LA sheen."

"Food was very overpriced and underwhelming if you are a foodie. Portions were miniscules, and staff had attitude. I don't think a plate with a few greens that covers less than 1/3 of the plate is attractive or adequate for 11.00 - and when one asks, "where is the salad, are you filling up the rest of the plate," the answer is, "we believe in negative space!"
The chef was not cooking, there were as many people in the tiny open kitchen working as there were diners.
I wanted to be awed, as I had heard good things. A bad English muffin with cultured cream is not an appetizer, most disappointing! A few poached apples with vanilla ice cream is not a dessert."

"The food was delicious and well presented, which reminded me at time of Manresa.
I really appreciated that they had a vegetarian tasting menu - something rare in this city where all hot spots seem to offer mostly animal parts.
The service was friendly though slow. On a good note, they also gave us ample time to enjoy the food. They also have an interesting (read: good) wine list, at very reasonable prices.
The con is that the place is somewhat pretentious and looks like any other of the new places around (slightly industrial - slightly living-room, striped kitchen towel-napkins, etc.), but the staff did not have an attitude and it was less noisy than Gjelina, for example."

"After all the hype for this chef and this restaurant, my Tuesday prix fixe meal was disappointing. "We ordered the tasting menu, our party arrived on time, but we sat at the table for 15 minutes before anything happened. There were some very long intervals between dishes. But, the food was very creative and interesting, sometimes so conceptual that it was a bit hard to follow. The portions were minuscule. We brought our own wine, having been told that there was no corkage fee. But there was, so they only charged us for one bottle. We did have a fun time, even though things were a bit rough. Maybe that's what they are going for?"
